Given their severity and resultant loss of function, postpoliomyelitic foot and ankle deformities require a unique correction method. Correction with dynamic Ilizarov external fixation is one such modality, although it is technically demanding and requires precise preoperative planning. In our case study, a 40-year-old male with a severe postpoliomyelitic equinocavovarus right foot and ankle deformity was treated with gradual correction using dynamic, hinged Ilizarov external fixation.

Background: Volunteers play a significant role in supporting hospice and palliative care in Africa, but little is known about the types of volunteers, their motivations and roles in service delivery.
Methods: Palliative care experts from 30 African countries were invited to participate in an online survey, conducted in English and French, that consisted of 58 questions on: socio-demographics, the activities, motivation and coordination of volunteers, and an appraisal of recent developments in volunteering. The questionnaire was pre-tested in Uganda.

We are presenting a new very minimally invasive technique for laparoscopic appendectomy (needlescopic appendectomy [NAP]) in children and adolescents using suture grasper device, epidural needle, and homemade isolated long diathermy probe without any conventional laparoscopic instruments. NAP was attempted in 48 patients with uncomplicated acute appendicitis at Al-Azhar, Tanta University Hospitals and other allied hospitals during the period from May 2017 to November 2018. The study included patients with acute appendicitis and patients scheduled for interval appendectomy.

Background: Statins are traditionally used in lowering cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein biosynthesis, but recent reports show their beneficial effect on microcirculation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of simvastatin on the microcirculation and in conjunction with aspirin in a rat free epigastric flap model.
Methods: Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into group A (control, = 12), group B (simvastatin treated, = 12), and group C (simvastatin and aspirin, = 12).

Background: Magnetic resonance lymphangiography (MRL) has increased our knowledge of lymphatic anatomy and lymphedema pathophysiology and improved the efficacy of microsurgical procedures to manage peripheral lymphedema. The aim of this study is to investigate the ability of MRL to detect communications between superficial and deep lymphatic systems in breast cancer-related lymphedema (BRCL) and to investigate whether these communications could preserve lymphatic drainage of the hand.
Methods: Between 2008 and 2017 we used MRL imaging in 59 women with BCRL.

Background: Limb lengthening for congenital femoral deficiency (CFD) with or without fibular hemimelia can be performed with both external and internal devices. The purpose of this study is to compare clinical outcomes of femoral lengthening utilizing monolateral external fixation versus a magnetically motorized intramedullary nail in patients with CFD with or without fibular hemimelia.
Methods: This retrospective review included 62 patients with femoral lengthening, 32 patients had monolateral external fixation (group A), 30 patients had internal lengthening nail (group B).

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of plasma kinetic vaporization (PKVP) of the prostate for symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Patients And Methods: Twenty-one patients had been enrolled in this study at Al-Azhar University Hospitals to evaluate their long-term follow-up after PKVP. The outcome was evaluated using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life (QOL), peak urinary flow rate (Q), postvoiding residual (PVR) of urine, prostate volume, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, and long-term complications of the surgery.

Background: Motorised fully implantable implantable intramedullary (IM) lengthening devices have been gaining popularity all over the world for limb-lengthening procedures. Multiple advantages have been demonstrated over external fixator-controlled lengthening.

Background: Atypical presentation of intestinal malrotation provide a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma for the surgeon to answer the question is it wisdom to operate or not? Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) contrast study is essential for diagnosis; however, 'soft' radiologic findings place the responsibility of excluding malrotation directly on the surgeon. Recently, minimally invasive surgical techniques would be able to accomplish the identical evaluation and treatment of this group of patients.
Patients And Methods: A total of 40 patients (25 male, 15 female), age of 2-14 years, presented with symptoms of chronic abdominal pain, intermittent upper intestinal obstruction, recurrent bilious vomiting and failure to thrive.

Background: Closed avulsion injury of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon is a relatively common condition of the hand. Its present classification system seems to be deficient in including all possible patterns of injury, leading to improper selection of the best treatment method for the injury. We aim to provide a new classification scheme for this injury.

Purpose: Growth modulation with tension band plates (TBPs) and cannulated screws is the current mainstay of treatment for pediatric lower extremity angular deformities. Solid screws have been used as an alternative to cannulated screws to decrease the risk of screw failure, particularly in obese children. The downside of solid screws is the decrease in precision of placement.

Background: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a challenging complication in patients with postirradiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the usage of a nasoseptal flap (NSF) after endoscopic sequestrectomy to reconstruct resultant skull base defects for the treatment of ORN.
Case Presentation: We present our experience on the adaption of an NSF as a reconstruction method for bony clival defects after endoscopic sequestrectomy in patients with postirradiated NPC.

The prognostic significance of squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and lymph node density (LND) has been individually recognized in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We investigated the relationship between preoperative serum markers (SCC-Ag and CRP) and postoperative prognostic marker (LND) in this study. We retrospectively analyzed 277 OSCC patients who underwent primary curative resection and neck dissection with/or without adjuvant therapy between March 2008 and November 2013.

The mechanical features of and biologic response to using distraction osteogenesis with the circular external fixator are the unique aspects of Ilizarov's contribution that allows deformity correction and reconstruction of bone defects. We present a retrospective study of 20 patients who suffered from a variety of benign tumours for which external fixators (EF) were used to treat deformity, bone loss, and limb-length discrepancy. A total of 26 bony segments in twenty patients (10 males, 10 females; mean age 17 years; range 7-58 years) were treated with EF for residual problems from the tumour itself (primary treatment) in 8 patients and for complications related to the primary surgery (secondary treatment) in 12 patients.

Background: Open repair of recurrent inguinal hernias [RIH] in infancy and childhood is difficult and there is definite risk of damaging the vas deferens and testicular vessels. Laparoscopic repair of RIH has the benefit of avoiding the previous operative site. The aim of this study is to present our experience with laparoscopic repair of RIH either after open or laparoscopic hernia repair with stress on technical refinements to prevent recurrence.

Closed avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon is classified based on the impact of injury on the management plan. In this report, we present a case with unclassified pattern of FDP tendon avulsion. The injury involves an intra-articular fracture of the volar part of distal phalanx of the little finger resulting into two bony fragments, one attached to the retracted avulsed tendon and another separated and incarcerated at A4 pulley, and an intact dorsal cortex of the phalanx.
