Although rare, ureteric injuries can occur during gynecological surgical interventions, and their diagnosis can be challenging, especially when delayed. If left untreated, missed ureteric injuries can lead to severe complications, including prolonged hospitalization, sepsis, renal damage, and potentially even loss of the affected kidney. We present a unique case of a urinoma caused by bilateral ureteric injuries following abdominal hysterectomy, which was initially misdiagnosed as an intraperitoneal hematoma.

Background: The pre-treatment characteristics of the patient and ectopic pregnancy to determine the patients who are likely to successfully respond to methotrexate (MTX) therapy remain controversial. This study investigated the outcomes of ectopic pregnancy after one and two MTX doses and their independent predictors.

Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study of women who consented to MTX treatment in 2017-2018 at our institution ( = 317).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how different pain management techniques during labor—epidural analgesia and intramuscular morphine—affect short-term outcomes for mothers and newborns, particularly looking at NICU admissions and other complications.
  • Conducted in Qatar with 7721 low-risk vaginal deliveries, it found no significant difference in NICU admissions between groups receiving these pain management methods and those receiving none, except for a notable increase in NICU admissions due to respiratory depression when both methods were used together.
  • Additionally, the study indicated that using either epidural analgesia alone or in combination with morphine was linked to a longer second stage of labor, suggesting some potential risks associated with these pain management strategies

Venous thromboembolism in pregnant obese Individuals.

Best Pract Res Clin Obstet Gynaecol

June 2024

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, UK; Medicine, St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, UK. Electronic address:

Venous thrombosis and thromboembolism (VTE) remain the leading cause of direct maternal deaths, occurring within 42 days of the end of pregnancy in the UK. Pregnancy is associated with an overall 10-fold higher incidence of VTE than in the non-pregnant state and has been reported to reach up to 30-fold higher in the puerperium. This increased risk is further exacerbated by maternal obesity in a relationship that appears to be proportional with increasing Body Mass Index (BMI).

Background: Ultra-long-acting insulin analogs [insulin degludec (IDeg) and insulin glargine 300 units/mL (IGla-300)] offer a longer duration of action with less risk of hypoglycemia compared to other long-acting insulins. However, data about the comparative efficacy and safety are inconsistent.

Methods: We searched CENTRAL, PubMed, Embase, ICTRP Search Portal, and ClinicalTrials.

Post-malaria neurological syndrome (PMNS) is a rare, self-limiting condition that presents with a wide range of neurological manifestations after clearance of malarial infection, especially 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 f𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮, most patients recover without residual deficits. Here we present a case of a 29-year-old, male with a recent history of malaria treated successfully, who presented due to a generalized tonic-clonic seizure, without any other neurological symptoms, the examination and labs were unremarkable, he underwent a computer tomography (CT) scan and Magnetic resonant imaging (MRI) which both showed two areas of vasogenic edema involving the subcortical white matter of left frontal and right posterior parasagittal regions, all autoimmune screens, infection workup from blood and CSF were negative, he underwent a brain biopsy that showed intense perivascular inflammation with neuronal loss and gliosis, findings are nonspecific and can be seen in a variety of condition. The patient's condition improved, and he was discharged without any complications.

Clin Microbiol Infect

April 2024

Communicable Diseases Center, Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar; Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar.

Objectives: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of switching from intravenous (IV) to oral antimicrobial therapy in patients with Enterobacterales bacteraemia, after completion of 3-5 days of microbiologically active IV therapy.

Methods: A multicentre, open-label, randomized trial of adults with monomicrobial Enterobacterales bacteraemia caused by a strain susceptible to ≥1 oral beta-lactam, quinolone, or trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Inclusion criteria included completion of 3-5 days of microbiologically active IV therapy, being afebrile and haemodynamically stable for ≥48 hours, and absence of an uncontrolled source of infection.

Being an important cause of early-onset neonatal sepsis, clinical chorioamnionitis in the mother results in frequent laboratory workup and antibiotic use for the neonate. Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Qatar follow the categorical approach recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA, and all chorioamnionitis-exposed neonates receive antibiotics. Our project aimed to reduce antibiotic use among chorioamnionitis-exposed, asymptomatic term babies by adopting the early-onset sepsis calculator (EOSCAL).

BACKGROUND Chylous ascites (chyloperitoneum), a condition arising from lymphatic leakage in the peritoneal cavity, is rare in liver cirrhosis patients, accounting for less than 1% of cases. Treatment typically involves therapeutic paracentesis, dietary modifications, a low-fat, high-protein diet, and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) supplementation. Orlistat, a fat absorption inhibitor, has been reported to show potential efficacy in treating chylous ascites.

Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) are the most common healthcare-associated infections, with rates varying between countries. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among common HAP/VAP pathogens has been reported, and multidrug resistance (MDR) is of further concern across Middle Eastern countries. This narrative review summarizes the incidence and pathogens associated with HAP/VAP in hospitals across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
