Introduction Multiple sclerosis (MS) is often associated with depression and anxiety, with no clear prevalence, and the relationship between them is not fully understood. Methods In a cross-sectional study of 365 multiple sclerosis patients selected through a random sampling method from the MS society of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, we collected data by self-administered questionnaires - the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) questionnaire - and analyzed by descriptive and analytical statistics. Results Approximately 51.

This work reports the use of a ternary composite that integrates p-Toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI), chitosan, and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as the active sensing layer of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. The SPR sensor is intended for application in the non-invasive monitoring and screening of diabetes through the detection of low concentrations of acetone vapour of less than or equal to 5 ppm, which falls within the range of breath acetone concentration in diabetic patients. The ternary composite film was spin-coated on a 50-nm-thick gold layer at 6000 rpm for 30 s.

Int Ophthalmol

August 2020

Department of Ophthalmology, King Abdulaziz University Hospital, College of Medicine, King Saud University, P.O. Box 245, Riyadh, 11411, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Purpose: To present the differentiating clinical findings between intratarsal keratinous cyst (IKC) and chalazion.

Method: A retrospective review of medical records of all patients who presented between 2010 and 2018 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital with proven histopathological diagnosis of IKC was done. Complete ophthalmologic evaluation at presentation, surgical procedures performed, complications, histopathological findings, response to treatment and follow-up were recorded.

Meesmann epithelial corneal dystrophy (MECD) is a rare dominantly inherited disorder that is characterized by corneal epithelial microcysts and is associated with mutations in the keratin 3 and keratin 12 genes. In this study, we report a novel mutation in the gene in a Vietnamese pedigree with MECD. Slit-lamp examination was performed on each of the 7 recruited members of a Vietnamese family to identify characteristic features of MECD.

Tarsal-related cysts: Different diagnoses with similar presentations.

Saudi J Ophthalmol

January 2019

Department of Ophthalmology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Purpose: To study different tarsal cysts that share similar presentations and are commonly misdiagnosed clinically as a chalazion.

Methods: A retrospective review of medical charts of all consecutive patients who presented eyelid tarsal-related pathology that needed surgical excision between 2010 and 2016 to a tertiary hospital was done. The data collected included preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative observations.

Background: Sepsis represents a huge burden for the health-care system. Septic patients presented by emergency medical services (EMS) are usually sicker in comparison to patients arriving by other means. Knowledge of sepsis is a key factor in recognizing and providing the appropriate care; it is not the only barrier as EMS providers do not have access to the proper diagnostic investigation.

In this study, a magnetic composite was synthesized using chitosan, diphenylurea and formaldehyde with magnetic nanoparticles, (MnFeO) via condensation polymerization. The newly synthesized magnetic nanocomposite (CDF@MF) was characterized using several analytical techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and etc. To investigate the applicability of CDF@MF, it was employed as an adsorbent for rapidly removal of an antibiotic, namely, tetracycline (TC), from aqueous solution using several factors such as pH, the adsorbent dose, the initial concentration and the contact time.

Injectable gold is known to deposit in the dermis for life, and such patients are at risk of developing chrysiasis post-laser exposure. It is unknown if patients with history of edible gold consumption would develop a similar reaction after quality-switched laser exposure. Our aim is to assess if patients with history of edible gold consumption develop chrysiasis after quality-switched laser exposure.

Demographics of Pediatric Orbital Lesions: A Tertiary Eye Center Experience in Saudi Arabia.

J Epidemiol Glob Health

March 2019

Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Mansoura Faculty Of Medicine, Egypt.

Orbital lesions vary in their classification, incidence, and presentation depending on the age and geographic distribution. Such lesions in the pediatric age group have been studied extensively because of the possibility of faster progression of orbital involvement and the higher risk of morbidity in this age group in which vision is still developing. In Saudi Arabia, orbital lesions were studied over a 6-year period in the late 1980s, when retinoblastoma cases used to present late with orbital involvement.

Herpes Simplex Encephalitis (HSE) is one of the commonest viral encephalitis and its recurrence is being increasingly reported were HSE relapse rate came up to 5%. Both herpes simplex virus (HSV) types can lead to encephalitis and it was established that HSV-1 is capable of nervous system invasion, latency, and recurrence. The recurrence of HSE used to be attributed to immunological compromise, but reports show many cases have no obvious immune system impairment.

Extracellular laccase production and its optimization from catalyzed decolorization of synthetic dyes.

Saudi J Biol Sci

November 2018

Cyanobacterial Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of Biosciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University), New Delhi 110025, India.

In the present study laccase production potential of a photosynthetic, non nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (SAE-25780) was investigated for their probable use in synthetic dye decolorization which poses environmental pollution problem in aquatic bodies. (SAE-25780) showed a constitutive production of laccase which increased up to 80% in the presence of inducer guaiacol. The optimal condition for laccase was 30 °C, 10 mM sucrose as a carbon source, 10 mM sodium nitrate as a nitrogen source, and 2 mM copper as metal activator.
