Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-VEGF therapy on visual acuity in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) over two years.
  • The research involved analyzing data from 1,780 eyes treated from 2015 to 2019, documenting changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and treatment methods.
  • Results showed a significant improvement in BCVA, with 73.3% of eyes maintaining good vision, highlighting anti-VEGF therapy as the preferred first-line treatment for DME.

Suv4-20h2 protects against influenza virus infection by suppression of chromatin loop formation.

The spatial organization of chromatin is known to be highly dynamic in response to environmental stress. However, it remains unknown how chromatin dynamics contributes to or modulates disease pathogenesis. Here, we show that upon influenza virus infection, the H4K20me3 methyltransferase Suv4-20h2 binds the viral protein NP, which results in the inactivation of Suv4-20h2 and the dissociation of cohesin from Suv4-20h2.

Decreased coaptation height in adults has been identified as a marker of early valve failure. We evaluated aortic valve coaptation and effective height in healthy children and in children with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) with aortic cusp prolapse (ACP), using echocardiography. We included 45 subjects with VSD with ACP, 27 did not develop aortic regurgitation (AR) by ACP and 18 developed AR by ACP, and 83 healthy children as controls.

Aims: Real time 3D echocardiography (RT3DE) has been applied for the assessment of left atrial (LA) function in patients with adult heart disease; however, LA function is not well known in children. We aimed at determining the normal range of LA volume (LAV) using RT3DE and the feasibility and reproducibility of this method in healthy subjects and at elucidating the developmental changes in the LAV with aging.

Methods And Results: In this study, 359 healthy people (mean age, 23.

Impact of obesity on plasma B-type natriuretic peptide levels in Japanese community-based subjects.

Heart Vessels

May 2012

Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Akita University Faculty of Medicine, 1-1-1 Hondo, Akita City, Akita, 010-8543, Japan.

The plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) concentration was recently shown to be inversely correlated with body mass index (BMI). However, very few attempts have been made to associate abdominal obesity and BNP in the Japanese general population. Here, we conducted a cross-sectional study, and examined 339 male and 429 female residents without heart disease in a rural Japanese community who received an annual health checkup in 2006.

Purpose: To determine the temperature-dependent ultrastructural changes of the cone matrix sheath, a possible critical factor in the adhesive strength binding photoreceptors and pigment epithelial cells.

Methods: Aqueous-insoluble interphotoreceptor matrix (IPM) was extracted by soaking fresh bovine retinas in acidic HEPES-buffered solution followed by treatment with 1% Triton X-100 to remove cone membrane fragments. The IPM preparations were then incubated in the same buffer solution at either 34 degrees C, 37 degrees C, or 40 degrees C for 60 min.

Purpose: To study the effect of the concomitant use of brinzolamide and latanoprost on the 24-hour variation in intraocular pressure (IOP) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients first treated with timolol and latanoprost.

Methods: We studied 30 eyes from 30 POAG patients previously treated with latanoprost monotherapy. After a washout of four weeks in both eyes, all patients were treated with 0.

Survey of dental diseases in forensic autopsy cases.

Leg Med (Tokyo)

April 2009

Division of Forensic Sciences, Department of Social Medicine, Akita University Faculty of Medicine, 1-1-1 Hondo, Akita 010-8543, Japan.

Forensic odontology plays an important role in the age estimation of a corpse. However, some cases exhibit a large margin of error when using conventional morphological methods. The final purpose of this study was to survey dental diseases to find the factors that result in errors in age estimation.

Background: Many patients with heart disease continue to have cardiac events despite receiving optimal treatments for traditional risk factors. Consequently, non-traditional risk factors for heart disease, such as perceived stress, have attracted attention. Associations between perceived stress and plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) were explored, while controlling for traditional heart disease risk factors.
