Background: Preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) and restrictive spirometric pattern (RSP) are often considered interchangeable in identifying restrictive impairment in spirometry.

Research Question: Do PRISm and RSP have different individual associations with risk factors, morbidity, and mortality?

Study Design And Methods: In a cross-sectional and longitudinal study, including 26,091 Norwegian general population men (30 to 46 years of age), we explored the association of PRISm and RSP with smoking habits, BMI, education, respiratory symptoms, self-reported cardiopulmonary disease, and mortality after 26 years of follow-up. PRISm was defined as FEV/FVC ≥ lower limit of normal (LLN) and FEV < LLN, and RSP was defined as FEV/FVC ≥ LLN and FVC < LLN.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the most common indolent type of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Advances in treatment have improved overall survival, but early relapse or transformation to aggressive disease is associated with inferior outcome. To identify early genetic events and track tumor clonal evolution, we performed multi-omics analysis of 94 longitudinal biopsies from 44 FL patients; 22 with transformation (tFL) and 22 with relapse without transformation (nFL).

Systolic blood pressure at age 40 and 30-year stroke risk in men and women.

Open Heart

August 2024

Department of Medical Research, Vestre Viken Hospital Trust, Bærum Hospital, Drammen, Norway.

Background: American and European guidelines define hypertension differently and are sex agnostic. Our aim was to assess the impact of different hypertension thresholds at the age of 40 on 30-year stroke risk and to examine sex differences.

Methods: We included 2608 stroke-free individuals from the Akershus Cardiac Examination 1950 Study, a Norwegian regional study conducted in 2012-2015 of the 1950 birth cohort, who had previously participated in the Age 40 Program, a nationwide health examination study conducted in 1990-1993.

Interneurons in the CA1 stratum oriens expressing αTTP may play a role in the delayed-ageing Pol μ mouse model.

Mol Cell Neurosci

September 2024

Human Neuroanatomy Laboratory, University of Castilla-La Mancha and CRIB (Regional Centre for Biomedical Research), Albacete, Spain; School of Pharmacy, University of Castilla-La Mancha, Albacete, Spain. Electronic address:

Neurodegeneration associated with ageing is closely linked to oxidative stress (OS) and disrupted calcium homeostasis. Some areas of the brain, like the hippocampus - particularly the CA1 region - have shown a high susceptibility to age-related changes, displaying early signs of pathology and neuronal loss. Antioxidants such as α-tocopherol (αT) have been effective in mitigating the impact of OS during ageing.

In an era of 'big data', we propose that a collaborative network approach will drive a better understanding of the mechanisms of delirium, and more rapid development of therapies. We have formed the International Delirium Pathophysiology & Electrophysiology Network for Data sharing (iDEPEND) group with a key aim to 'facilitate the study of delirium pathogenesis with electrophysiology, imaging, and biomarkers including data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation'. Our initial focus is on studies of electrophysiology as we anticipate this methodology has great potential to enhance our understanding of delirium.

ProBio is the first outcome-adaptive platform trial in prostate cancer utilizing a Bayesian framework to evaluate efficacy within predefined biomarker signatures across systemic treatments. Prospective circulating tumor DNA and germline DNA analysis was performed in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer before randomization to androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs), taxanes or a physician's choice control arm. The primary endpoint was the time to no longer clinically benefitting (NLCB).

Background: It is difficult to distinguish between tumor progression (TP) and treatment-related abnormalities (TRA) in treated glioblastoma patients via conventional MRI, but this distinction is crucial for treatment decision making. Glioblastoma is known to exhibit an invasive growth pattern along white matter architecture and vasculature. This study quantified lesion development patterns in treated glioblastoma lesions and their relation to white matter microstructure to distinguish TP from TRA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how well the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Zürich Claudication Questionnaire (ZCQ) measure success in patients treated surgically for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS).
  • It involved 601 patients and assessed the responsiveness of the ODI and ZCQ using different methods, comparing patient outcomes over a two-year period.
  • The findings showed that both questionnaires were highly responsive, with a notable 30% relative change in ODI indicating successful treatment in 81% of patients.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) has become a vital tool in clinical microbiology, playing an important role in outbreak investigations, molecular surveillance, and identification of bacterial species, resistance mechanisms and virulence factors. However, the complexity of WGS data presents challenges in interpretation and reporting, requiring tailored strategies to enhance efficiency and impact. This study explores the diverse needs of key stakeholders in healthcare, including clinical management, laboratory work, public surveillance and epidemiology, infection prevention and control, and academic research, regarding WGS-based reporting of clinically relevant bacterial species.
