Laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy causes less pain, shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to daily activities. Because of potential bowel injuries and risk of intestinal obstruction secondary to adhesions later on, the retroperitoneoscopic donor nephrectomy (RDN) technique has been developed. The first 7 RDN cases carried out at our organ transplantation unit between December 2006 and May 2007 were retrospectively examined.

The effect of hyperhomocysteinemia induced by pretreatment with methionine 12 weeks prior to the study on the responses induced by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), electrical field stimulation (EFS), and ATP have been evaluated in isolated rat duodenum. In the presence of adrenergic and cholinergic blockade, EFS (60 V, 1 ms, 1-3 Hz) induced frequency-dependent relaxations of the preparation. GABA and ATP also caused submaximal relaxation of the rat duodenum.

Recent studies have clearly reported that there is a relationship between endotoxemia and acute renal injury. The aim of this study was to investigate whether treatment with the new potent PARP inhibitor PJ34 could prevent the acute renal injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Endotoxemia was induced by LPS injection (10 mg/kg, i.

The extension of a thyroid goiter into the mediastinum, commonly known as a substernal goiter, is commonly located in the anterior mediastinum. Substernal enlargement of a goiter can cause compression of several mediastinal structures including the trachea. Tracheal compression may rarely lead to acute respiratory failure.

The aim of this study was to investigate the immunohistochemical distribution of laminin, vimentin and desmin during the implantation period in the rat since ECM remodelling and the expression of intermediate filaments (Ifs) is essential for successful decidualization and implantation. On day 4 of pregnancy, laminin was found in a few endometrial stromal cells (ESC), the basement membrane of the numerous endometrial blood vessels, in endometrial glands and as well as in the uterine epithelium. The localization of vimentin on day 4 of pregnancy was widespread in the ESC.

The association between oxidative or ultraviolet (UV) light induced DNA damage in the lens epithelium and the development of lens opacities, and the existence of DNA repair in lens epithelial cells have been reported. Polymorphisms of DNA repair enzymes may affect repair efficiency. In this study, we aimed to determine the frequency of polymorphisms in two DNA repair enzyme genes, xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group D (XPD) codon 751 and X-ray cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) codon 399, in a sample of Turkish patients with maturity onset cataract.

Objective: PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10), also referred to as MMAC1 (mutated in multiple advanced cancers) gene was recently identified as a putative tumor suppressor in a variety of malignant tumors. PTEN expression has been investigated in some squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of head and neck. However, there is only little knowledge about laryngeal malignancies.

Background: Expressions of various biomarkers in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have been linked with the prognosis and involvement of mediastinal lymph nodes.
Methods: In this study, we utilized recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) by using P53, c-erb-B2, and P-glycoprotein (PGP) expressions evaluated by immunohistochemistry to estimate retrospectively the likelihood of the occult N2 mediastinal lymph node involvement in patients with operable NSCLC.
Results: In univariate tests, immunohistochemical staining of the primary tumor for these 3 markers in 61 patients undergoing surgery revealed no direct relationship with the N2 involvement.

We prepared diet-induced hyperhomocysteinemia (hHcy) in adult male Wistar rats and investigated the effects of hHcy on the adenosinergic and adrenergic responses in vitro and in vivo. The responsiveness of right atria from hHcy rats to the negative chronotropic effects of adenosine (Ado) was found to be significantly greater in hHcy rats than in controls. The pD2 value and maximum effect of Ado were significantly increased in 12-week hHcy right atria when compared with those from age-matched controls.

Background: Medical education requires detailed investigation because it is a period during which the attitudes and behaviors of physicians develop. The purpose of this study was to calculate the yearly smoking prevalence and incidence rates of medical faculty students and to identify the risk factors for adopting smoking behaviour.
Methods: This is a cohort study in which every student was asked about their smoking habits at the time of first registration to the medical faculty, and was monitored every year.
