Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs) are a family of enzymes involved in a wide variety of biological processes, including DNA repair and maintenance of genomic stability following genotoxic stress, and regulates the expression of various proteins at the transcriptional level as well as replication and differentiation. However, excessive activation of PARP has been shown to contribute to the pathogenesis of several diseases associated with oxidative stress (OS), which has been known to play a fundamental role in the etiology of male infertility. Based on the degree and type of the stress stimulus, PARP directs cells to specific fates (such as, DNA repair vs.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relaxant effect of taurine, one of the most commonly employed dietary supplements, in rat corpus cavernosum (CC), and to further investigate the contribution of possible underlying mechanisms. Strips of CC were suspended in an organ bath system for isometric tension studies. Taurine (10-80 mmol/l) produced a concentration-dependent relaxation response in rat CC.

Objective: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) may play an important role in bipolar disorder (BD) pathogenesis. There is only one study about a relationship between TNF-α levels and cognitive impairments in BD. The aim of the present study was to see whether TNF-α, soluble P55 TNF receptor (sTNFR1), and soluble P75 TNF receptor (sTNFR2) levels in BD patients are different from controls and to investigate the relationships between the levels of TNF-α, sTNFR1, and sTNFR2 and the cognitive functions in euthymic BD patients and controls.

Study Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the analgesic efficacy and safety of intravenous, single-dose paracetamol versus dexketoprofen versus morphine in patients presenting with mechanical low back pain (LBP) to the emergency department (ED).

Methods: This randomised double-blind study compared the efficacy of intravenous 1 gm paracetamol, 50 mg dexketoprofen and 0.1 mg/kg morphine in patients with acute mechanical LBP.

Purpose: Tubular ectasia of the rete testis (TERT) is a rare disorder that can be seen on ultrasonography (US) during a routine examination. In this study, we aim to discuss 15 cases of TERT and concomitant scrotal pathologies.

Methods: A total of 405 patients who were admitted to our department between March 2009 and December 2011 for scrotal US with different complaints such as scrotal pain, palpable mass, infertility, varicocele, or hydrocele were evaluated.

Learning to develop the doctor-patient relationship is very important in the treatment of patients with cancer. We aim to train our students in the early years of study about this subject with a course on the patient-doctor communication, prepared for third year students. One hundred fifty-four third year students participated in our study during the 2006-2007 academic years.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the effects of sildenafil in human umbilical artery preparation taken from preeclamptic or normal pregnant women, also to investigate underlying mechanisms in these effects.

Study Design: Eighteen pregnant women with preeclampsia and 18 healthy pregnant women were involved. Relaxation responses of sildenafil in presence and absence of nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor, N-[omega]-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), and soluble guanylyl cyclase inhibitor, 1H-[1,2,4] oxadiazolo [4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), were compared between the preeclampsia group and control group.

Rupture of a sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is clinically characterized by widening of an existing sinus of Valsalva aneurysm in time and its opening to other cardiac cavities, primarily to the right atrium and right ventricle. Increased biventricular filling appearing due to rupture causes symptoms of heart failure. Although classical treatment of ruptured SVA is surgical, various percutaneous closure devices are being used successfully for treatment of lesions in recent years.

The aim of the study was to investigate the distribution of Candida species isolated from urine specimens of hospitalized patients in Akdeniz University Hospital, Antalya, Turkey, as well as their susceptibilities to antifungal agents. A total of 100 patients who had nosocomial candiduria between March 2003 and May 2004 at the facility were included in the study. Organisms were identified by conventional methods and the use of API ID 32C strips.

Congential aorta-right atrial tunnel (ARAT) is a rare anomaly. Many patients are asymptomatic and diagnosis can be made during investigation of systolic and diastolic continuous murmur heard on cardiac oscultation. In some patients, symptoms such as palpitation, dyspnea, and fatigue on exertion can be seen.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the effects of sildenafil and vardenafil in human umbilical artery preparation taken from pre-eclamptic or normal pregnant women, and also to investigate the underlying mechanisms in these effects.

Study Design: Fifteen pregnant women with pre-eclampsia and 15 healthy pregnant women were involved. Relaxation responses of sildenafil and vardenafil in the presence and absence of nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, N-[omega]-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME), and soluble guanylyl cyclase inhibitor, 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), were compared between the pre-eclampsia group and the control group.

Objectives: We aimed to analyze the predictors of outcome in metastatic germ cell cancer (MGCC) patients treated with High-dose Chemotherapy (HDC) and stem cell rescue.

Background: Various prognostic factors have been suggested in the treatment of metastatic germ cell cancer. However, there is no comprehensive evaluation of independent prognostic factors for the efficacy of HDC in published patient cohorts.

Objective: Dexmedetomidine is an α2-receptor agonist which is increasingly being used in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery due to its suppressive effect on the stress responses against intubation and surgery. In this study effects of dexmedetomidine administration as an adjuvant agent during induction and maintenance of anesthesia on intraoperative hemodynamic changes were studied in patients undergoing CABG.

Methods: A total of 20 patients undergoing CABG were included in the study.

Purpose: Induction chemotherapy before radiotherapy, although inferior to concomitant chemoradiotherapy, is still used in clinical practice, and improves survival compared to radiotherapy alone in unresectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this setting, we assessed the predictors of benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy before radiotherapy.

Methods: Searches were made for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that compared neoadjuvant chemotherapy with no treatment, administered before definitive radiotherapy.

Background: The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is the most widely used tool for the evaluation of the level of consciousness. The Full Outline of Unresponsiveness (FOUR) Score is a new coma Scale that was developed considering the limitations of the GCS, and has been found to be useful in an intensive care setting. We aimed to compare FOUR Score and GCS in the emergency setting.
