Background/aim: A recent preclinical study reported that renal cell carcinoma was more susceptible to sevoflurane-mediated metastatic potentiation, compared to non-small cell lung cancer, suggesting that the effect of anesthetic agents on the metastatic potential varies according to cancer type. Based on this report, we conducted a retrospective cohort study to compare recurrence-free survival after nephrectomy, between renal cell carcinoma patients receiving volatile anesthesia and those receiving intravenous anesthesia.
Patients And Methods: We reviewed the electronic medical records of patients who underwent partial or radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma at the Seoul National University Hospital.

Although papillary thyroid cancers are known to have a relatively low risk of recurrence, several factors are associated with a higher risk of recurrence, such as extrathyroidal extension, nodal metastasis, and BRAF gene mutation. However, predicting disease recurrence and prognosis in patients undergoing thyroidectomy is clinically difficult. To detect new algorithms that predict recurrence, inductive logic programming was used in this study.

Although immune checkpoint inhibitors have significantly improved clinical outcomes in various malignant cancers, only a small proportion of patients reap benefits, likely due to the low number of T cells and high number of immunosuppressive cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of patients with advanced disease. We developed a cancer vaccine adjuvanted with nanoemulsion (NE) loaded with TLR7/8 agonist (R848) and analyzed its therapeutic effect alone or in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors, on antitumor immune responses and the reprogramming of suppressive immune cells in the TME. NE (R848) demonstrated robust local and systemic antitumor immune responses in both subcutaneous and orthotopic mouse lung cancer models, inducing tumor-specific T cell activation and mitigating T cell exhaustion.
