Background: The Spurling test, although a highly specific provocative test of the cervical spine in cervical radiculopathy (CR), has low to moderate sensitivity. Thus, we introduced the neck tornado test (NTT) to examine the neck and the cervical spine in CR.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to introduce a new provocative test, the NTT, and compare the diagnostic accuracy with a widely accepted provocative test, the Spurling test.

Purpose: This study evaluated the biomechanical properties of a new volar locking plate made by 3-dimensional printing using titanium alloy powder and 2 conventional volar locking plates under static and dynamic loading conditions that were designed to replicate those seen during fracture healing and early postoperative rehabilitation.

Methods: For all plate designs, 12 fourth-generation synthetic composite radii were fitted with volar locking plates according to the manufacturers' technique after segmental osteotomy. Each specimen was first preloaded 10 N and then was loaded to 100 N, 200 N, and 300 N in phases at a rate of 2 N/s.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

November 2017

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, National Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence in Research and Learning (NOCERAL), Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Purpose: A systematic review was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Does kinematically aligned (KA) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) achieve clinical outcomes comparable to those of mechanically aligned (MA) TKA? (2) How do the limb, knee, and component alignments differ between KA and MA TKA? (3) How is joint line orientation angle (JLOA) changed from the native knee in KA TKA compared to that in MA TKA?

Methods: Nine full-text articles in English that reported the clinical and radiological outcomes of KA TKA were included. Five studies had a control group of patients who underwent MA TKA. Data on patient demographics, clinical scores, and radiological results were extracted.

Aims: Robotic gastrectomy for gastric cancer has been proven to be a feasible and safe minimally invasive procedure. However, our previous multicenter prospective study indicated that robotic gastrectomy is not superior to laparoscopic gastrectomy. This study aimed to identify which subgroups of patients would benefit from robotic gastrectomy rather than from conventional laparoscopic gastrectomy.

The Correlation of Serum IL-12B Expression With Disease Activity in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Medicine (Baltimore)

June 2016

From the Department of Internal Medicine (HWL, SWK, SJP, SPH, TIK, WHK, JHC), Institute of Gastroenterology, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul; Department of Internal Medicine (SHC), Ajou University College of Medicine, Suwon; Department of Internal Medicine (CMM), School of Medicine, Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Republic of Korea; and Brain Korea 21 Plus Project for Medical Science (XC), Yonsei University.

Genetic variants in IL12B, encoding the p40 subunit common in interleukin-12 (IL-12) and interleukin-23, were identified as the susceptibility loci for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study aimed to identify the correlation of serum IL-12B expression with disease activity in patients with IBD and evaluate the possibility of IL-12B as a biomarker for assessing inflammatory status in IBD.A total of 102 patients with IBD, including 38, 32, and 32 patients with Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and intestinal Behçet's disease (intestinal BD), respectively, were included.

Manual vs. pressure-controlled facemask ventilation for anaesthetic induction in paralysed children: a randomised controlled trial.

Acta Anaesthesiol Scand

September 2016

Department of Anaesthesiology and Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia and Pain Research Institute, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Background: During anaesthetic induction with a facemask, the inconsistent inspiratory flow with manual ventilation (MV) raises the peak airway pressure (PAP), which can be significantly higher than PAP during pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV). In this study, PAP was compared between MV and PCV at the same tidal volume of 8-10 ml/kg during facemask ventilation for anaesthetic induction in children. The occurrence of gastric insufflation (GI) was evaluated with ultrasonography and stethoscopic auscultation.

The purpose of the present study is to compare the diagnostic accuracy of the splenic arterial resistive index (SARI) with that of liver stiffness measurement (LSM) for identifying patients with clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH). We included 47 patients (M:F = 37:10) who underwent Doppler ultrasonography, LSM and hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) on the same day. We investigated whether the SARI and LSM were correlated with the HVPG, and compared area under the curve (AUC) values for the abilities of SARI and LSM to diagnose CSPH.

Kinematically aligned TKA can align knee joint line to horizontal.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

August 2016

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Ajou University College of Medicine, 164, World Keobro, Suwonsi Yeongtong-gu, Gyeonggi-do, 443-721, Republic of Korea.

Purpose: The joint line of the native knee is horizontal to the floor and perpendicular to the vertical weight-bearing axis of the patient in a bipedal stance. The purposes of this study were as follows: (1) to find out the distribution of the native joint line in a population of normal patients with normal knees; (2) to compare the native joint line orientation between patients receiving conventional mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty (TKA), navigated mechanically aligned TKA, and kinematically aligned TKA; and (3) to determine which of the three TKA methods aligns the postoperative knee joint perpendicular to the weight-bearing axis of the limb in bipedal stance.

Methods: To determine the joint line orientation of a native knee, 50 full-length standing hip-to-ankle digital radiographs were obtained in 50 young, healthy individuals.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

September 2015

From the Department of Neurology (S.W.K., S.J.C., P.H.L.), Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea Severance Biomedical Science Institute (P.H.L.), Seoul, South Korea.

Background And Purpose: The burden of amyloid β is greater in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies than in those with Parkinson disease dementia, and an increased amyloid β load is closely related to a higher incidence of cerebral microbleeds. Here, we investigated the prevalence and topography of cerebral microbleeds in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies and those with Parkinson disease dementia to examine whether cerebral microbleeds are more prevalent in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies than in those with Parkinson disease dementia.

Materials And Methods: The study population consisted of 42 patients with dementia with Lewy bodies, 88 patients with Parkinson disease dementia, and 35 controls who underwent brain MR imaging with gradient recalled-echo.
