Department of Neurosurgery, Spine and Spinal Cord Institute, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul 03722, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated an automatic landmark detection model using 1017 lateral whole-spine radiographs collected between January 2020 and December 2021, splitting the data into training (819 images) and testing (198 images) sets, with additional external validation using 690 images from other institutions.
  • The model showed the best accuracy in detecting cervical landmarks (error of 1.5-2.4 mm), followed by lumbosacral landmarks (error of 2.1-3.0 mm), while thoracic landmarks had larger errors (2.4-4.3 mm).
  • The model's performance was highly reliable, with excellent agreement between the AI and expert measurements, evidenced by an intraclass correlation coefficient above

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and long-term clinical outcomes of stent-graft placement to treat hepatic arterial hemorrhage after pancreaticobiliary surgery.

Materials And Methods: Outcomes were retrospectively evaluated in 61 patients (50 men and 11 women; mean age, 63 years) who underwent stent-graft placement for delayed arterial hemorrhage (after 24 hours) after pancreaticobiliary surgery from 2006 to 2023. Bleeding sites included the gastroduodenal artery stump (n = 54), common or proper hepatic artery (n = 5), and right hepatic artery (n = 2).

Background: The benefits of transradial access (TRA) over transfemoral access (TFA) for bifurcation percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are uncertain because of the limited availability of device selection. This study aimed to compare the procedural differences and the in-hospital and long-term outcomes of TRA and TFA for bifurcation PCI using second-generation drug-eluting stents (DESs).

Methods: Based on data from the Coronary Bifurcation Stenting Registry III, a retrospective registry of 2,648 patients undergoing bifurcation PCI with second-generation DES from 21 centers in South Korea, patients were categorized into the TRA group (n = 1,507) or the TFA group (n = 1,141).

This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intra-arterial (IA) administration of low- dose tirofiban during endovascular therapy in patients with large ischemic core volumes on initial brain CT. Patients were divided into two groups based on the use of IA tirofiban. We identified 87 patients (16 and 71 patients in the tirofiban and no-tirofiban groups, respectively) with acute ischemic stroke due to intracranial artery occlusion who underwent endovascular therapy with a low Alberta Stroke Program Early CT scores (2-5).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates early laparoscopic cholecystectomy versus percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage (PTGBD) in patients with moderate-to-severe acute cholecystitis.
  • A total of 835 patients were analyzed, revealing that those in the PTGBD group had higher rates of preoperative complications like systemic inflammatory response syndrome and pneumonia compared to the early surgery group.
  • The findings suggest that early laparoscopic cholecystectomy is generally safe, but PTGBD may be preferred for patients with significant underlying health issues.

Conventional cage and plate (CCP) implants usually used in ACDF surgery, do have limitations such as the development of postoperative dysphagia, adjacent segment degeneration, and soft tissue injury. To reduce the risk of these complications, zero-profile stand-alone cage were developed. We used finite-element modeling to compare the total von Mises stress applied to the bone, disc, endplate, cage and screw when using CCP and ZPSC implants.

Purpose: This study examined the methods for treatment of femoral neck fracture (FNF) preferred by members of the Korean Hip Society (KHS) and identified factors that influence decisions regarding the surgical intervention of choice.

Materials And Methods: A total of 97 members of the KHS responded to the 16-question survey which included questions about the mean number of surgeries performed each month for treatment of femoral neck fractures, the cut-off age for deciding between internal fixation and arthroplasty, the implant used most often, usage of cement, and factors influencing each decision.

Results: The mean cut-off age used when deciding between internal fixation and arthroplasty was 64 years old.

Blocking the abrupt increase in systolic blood pressure associated with autonomic response during bladder hydrodistention in patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is essential for patient safety. We conducted this study to compare autonomic responses during bladder hydrodistention in patients with IC/BPS under general and spinal anaesthesia. Thirty-six patients were randomly allocated to a general anaesthesia (GA, n = 18) or a spinal anaesthesia (SA, n = 18) group.

Importance: The antiandrogenic effect of the 5α-reductase inhibitor (5-ARI) has been investigated for its role in preventing male-predominant cancers. Although 5-ARI has been widely associated with prostate cancer, its association with urothelial bladder cancer (BC), another cancer experienced predominantly by males, has been less explored.

Objective: To assess the association between 5-ARI prescription prior to BC diagnosis and reduced risk of BC progression.
