Background: The Da Vinci robot ® (DVR), released in the early 2000s, provided a set of innovation aiming at pushing minimally invasive surgery forward. Its stereoscopic magnified visualization camera, motions that exceed the natural range of the human hand, or tremor reduction enhanced the surgeon's skills and added value in many surgical fields.

Objective: To map the current use of the DVR in spine surgery, identify gaps, address its limits and future perspectives.

Efficient Polarizable QM/MM Using the Direct Reaction Field Hamiltonian with Electrostatic Potential Fitted Multipole Operators.

Electronic polarization and dispersion are decisive actors in determining interaction energies between molecules. These interactions have a particularly profound effect on excitation energies of molecules in complex environments, especially when the excitation involves a significant degree of charge reorganization. The direct reaction field (DRF) approach, which has seen a recent revival of interest, provides a powerful framework for describing these interactions in quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) models of systems, where a small subsystem of interest is described using quantum chemical methods and the remainder is treated with a simple MM force field.

[MMLV reverse transcriptase, a relevant tool for molecular biology].

The reverse transcriptase of Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus (MMLV) is an enzyme that synthesizes DNA from an RNA template. Among reverse transcriptases, this enzyme is currently the most commonly used in molecular biology and diagnostics. Since its discovery, this viral protein has been extensively studied, shedding light on its structural and functional characteristics, and offering opportunities to optimize the catalytic performances for biotechnological applications.

Multivariate filter methods for feature selection with the -metric.

Background: The -metric value is generally used as the importance score of a feature (or a set of features) in a classification context. This study aimed to go further by creating a new methodology for multivariate feature selection for classification, whereby the -metric is associated with a specific search direction (and therefore a specific stopping criterion). As three search directions are used, we effectively created three distinct methods.

Impact of inner hydrophobicity of dendrimer nanomicelles on biodistribution: a PET imaging study.

Self-assembly is a powerful strategy for building nanosystems for biomedical applications. We have recently developed small amphiphilic dendrimers capable of self-assembling into nanomicelles for tumor imaging. In this context, we studied the impact of increased hydrophobicity of the amphiphilic dendrimer on hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance and consequently on the self-assembly and subsequent biodistribution.

Medial posterior tibial slope measurements are overestimated on long radiographs and 3D CT compared to measurements on short lateral radiographs.

Purpose: This study assessed the measurements of the medial posterior tibial slope (MPTS) using long radiographs and three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) scans and compared them to measurements taken on short lateral knee radiographs. The study aimed to identify whether the at-risk slope measurements previously defined on the short radiographs would be similar to long radiographs and 3D CT scans.

Methods: A retrospective radiological review of 52 cases, who underwent planning for a slope-changing high tibial osteotomy and had short and long lateral radiographs and 3D CT scans of the tibia.

Background: Non-invasive photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), employing specific infrared light wavelengths to stimulate biological tissues, has recently gained attention for its application to treat neurological disorders. Here, we aimed to uncover the cellular targets of PBMT and assess its potential as a therapeutic intervention for multiple sclerosis (MS).

Methods: We applied daily dorsoventral PBMT in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse model, which recapitulates key features of MS, and revealed a strong positive impact of PBMT on the sensorimotor deficits.

Using a field device simulating a shear stress gradient, a multi-scale characterization of attached communities (metabarcoding, LC-MS, biochemical tests, microscopy) was carried out for one month each season in Toulon Bay (northwestern Mediterranean).

Factors associated with bacterial sexually transmitted infection screening uptake and diagnosis among men who have sex with men in France.

Background: The prevalence of syphilis, Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) in men who have sex with men (MSM) is very high. As these bacterial sexually transmitted infections (bSTIs) are frequently asymptomatic, they are often undiagnosed and therefore untreated. We aimed to characterize the profile of MSM who reported bSTI screening and diagnosis in the previous 12 months, and to identify the factors associated with a diagnosis of a bSTI among MSM in France.

Background: Alport Syndromes (AS) are the second leading genetic cause of Kidney Failure (KF). Whether multiple kidney cysts (MKC) phenotype belongs to the AS spectrum remains debated.

Methods: This multicenter retrospective study focused on patients genotyped with pathogenic COL4A3, COL4A4, or COL4A5 variants (classified as ACMG-AMP 4 or 5) between January 2011 and January 2023 across four French university hospitals.

Nucleotide analogues and mpox: Repurposing the repurposable.

While the COVID-19 crisis is still ongoing, a new public health threat has emerged with recent outbreaks of monkeypox (mpox) infections in Africa. Mass vaccination is not currently recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), and antiviral treatments are yet to be specifically approved for mpox, although existing FDA-approved drugs (Tecovirimat, Brincidofovir, and Cidofovir) may be used in severe cases or for immunocompromised patients. A first-line of defense is thus drug repurposing, which was heavily attempted against SARS-CoV-2 - albeit with limited success.

It is currently unclear how Pseudomonadota, a phylum that originated around the time of the Great Oxidation Event, became one of the most abundant and diverse bacterial phyla on Earth, with metabolically versatile members colonizing a wide range of environments with different O2 concentrations. Here, we address this question by studying isoprenoid quinones, which are central components of energy metabolism covering a wide range of redox potentials. We demonstrate that a dynamic repertoire of quinone biosynthetic pathways accompanied the diversification of Pseudomonadota.

Context matters: How to research vaccine attitudes and uptake after the COVID-19 crisis.

The pandemic dramatically accelerated research on vaccine attitudes and uptake, a field which mobilizes researchers from the social sciences and humanities as well as biomedical and public health disciplines. The field has the potential to contribute much more, but the growth in research and the deeper connections between disciplines brings challenges as well as opportunities. This perspective article assesses the recent development of the field, exploring progress whilst emphasizing that not enough attention has been paid to national and local contexts.

Introduction: In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), men who have sex with men (MSM) often have female sexual partners. Their overall risk of acquiring HIV is higher with male partners. Risk perception is associated with HIV knowledge, sexual risk and preventive behaviours.

Watching lanthanide nanoparticles one at a time: characterization of their photoluminescence dynamics at the single nanoparticle level.

Lanthanide nanoparticles (LnNPs) feature sharp emission lines together with millisecond emission lifetimes which make them promising luminescent probes for biosensing and bioimaging. Although LnNPs are attracting much interest, their photoluminescence properties at the single nanoparticle level remain largely unexplored. Here, we employ fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and photoluminescence burst analysis to investigate the photodynamics of Sm- and Eu-based LnNPs with single nanoparticle sensitivity and microsecond resolution.

Acceptability of and attitudes to the therapeutic use of cannabis and cannabidiol in people with Parkinson's disease: A French survey.

Introduction: Cannabis and cannabidiol (CBD) may potentially alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson's disease (PD), although clinical results to date have provided conflicting evidence. In France, cannabis use is illegal outside the current restricted medical cannabis experimental framework which does not include PD as an eligible condition. In contrast, CBD products are legal and are easily available.

Phosphorescent Chiral Cationic Binuclear Iridium(III) Complexes: Boosting the Circularly Polarized Luminescence Brightness.

We report the synthesis and characterization of two chiral binuclear iridium(III) complexes ( and ) prepared from enantiopure building blocks [μ-Cl(Δ-Ir(C^N))] and [μ-Cl(Λ-Ir(C^N))]. These building blocks have been obtained by chiral preparative high-performance liquid chromatography of the neutral iridium(III) complex (piv = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionate) followed by selective degradation of the ancillary ligand. For comparison purposes, we also synthesized a monomer () and a dimer (, mixture).

Targeting Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in the Eye: Insights from a New Model of Experimental Autoimmune Uveitis.

Autoimmune uveitis is a relapsing blind-causing ocular condition with complex pathogenesis that is not completely understood. There is a high demand for accurate animal models of experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) suitable for elucidating the molecular mechanisms of the disease and testing new therapeutic approaches. Here, we demonstrated that photoreceptor Ca/Zn-sensor protein recoverin is a uveoretinal antigen in albino rabbits provoking typical autoimmune chorioretinitis 2-4 weeks after immunization.

Vestibular epilepsy: clinical and electroencephalographic characteristics with the proposed diagnostic criteria.

Background: Focal seizures may encompass vestibular sensations in their symptomatology. When these manifestations occur in isolation or constitute the predominant symptom, they prompt consideration for diagnosing recurrent paroxysmal vertigo. However, the characterization of "vestibular epilepsy" remains debated and underexplored.

Stereoelectroencephalographic thermocoagulation in FLNA-positive heterotopia: Is it an effective treatment?

Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH) is a neuronal migration disorder often associated with drug-resistant epilepsy. The epileptogenic zone network (EZN) in PVNH is generally large, contraindicating surgery. Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) can be proposed to map the EZN and perform radiofrequency thermocoagulation (THC) with an efficacy rate of approximately 65%.

Mosquito-borne viruses represent a large global health burden. With geographic expansion of competent vectors for chikungunya virus (CHIKV), dengue virus (DENV), and Zika virus (ZIKV) in Europe, it is anticipated that the number of autochthonous cases of these tropical viruses in Europe will increase. Therefore, regular assessment of diagnostic capabilities in Europe is important.
