The mosquito-borne alphavirus o'nyong-nyong virus (ONNV) has proven its potential to cause major human outbreaks. On the African continent, ONNV causes unspecific febrile illness and co-circulates with the close relative chikungunya virus (CHIKV). The true scale of ONNV burden is poorly understood in Africa, because of the scarce availability of molecular in-house and commercial assays, strong cross-reactivity between ONNV and CHIKV in serological assays and a lack of surveillance.

Coupled Polymethine Dyes: Six Decades of Discoveries.

Chem Rec

December 2024

Aix-Marseille Univ, CNRS UMR 7325, Centre Interdisciplinaire de Nanoscience de Marseille (CINaM), Campus de Luminy, case 913, Marseille cedex 09, 13288, France.

This review provides a comprehensive examination of the applications of the seminal coupling principle introduced by Siegfried Dähne and Dieter Leupold in 1966. Their heuristic and groundbreaking work proposed that combining multiple polymethine subunits within a single chromophore enables orbital coupling, consequently narrowing the HOMO-LUMO gap, and yielding redshifted optical properties. These outcomes are particularly valuable for developing organic dyes tailored for visible-to-near-infrared applications.

Laboratory resuspension experiments were performed using three sediments and seawater, contrasted in terms of metals concentration/contents, metals partitioning in sediments as well as physical-chemical characteristics of both sediment and seawater. The aim of the study was to examine if the variability in metals content and metals distribution onto carrier phases are influencing the dynamics of metal transfers from and to sediment. Since Cu and Pb are classical contaminants found in coastal areas, their dissolved concentrations were monitored (up to 360 h) to assess their release or removal by particles, with a particle concentration of 2.

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as developmental coordination disorder (DCD), exhibit gross to fine sensorimotor impairments, reduced physical activity and interactions with the environment and people. This disorder co-exists with cognitive deficits, executive dysfunctions and learning impairments. Previously, we demonstrated in rats that limited amounts and atypical patterns of movements and somatosensory feedback during early movement restriction manifested in adulthood as degraded postural and locomotor abilities, and musculoskeletal histopathology, including muscle atrophy, hyperexcitability within sensorimotor circuitry and maladaptive cortical plasticity, leading to functional disorganization of the primary somatosensory and motor cortices in the absence of cortical histopathology.

The excited-state dynamics of the GFP chromophore, HBDI (anionic -hydroxybenzylidene-2,3-dimethylimidazolinone), were investigated through a combination of theoretical nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TA). The NAMD simulations revealed that the primary dynamics in excited states involve the formation of a P-twisted intermediate (S), which undergoes pendulum-like oscillations with respect to ϕ = 90°. This motion serves as a reservoir for the excited-state population and the primary source of fluorescence.

Individuals' perceptions of disease influence their adherence to preventive measures, shaping the dynamics of disease spread. Despite extensive research on the interaction between disease spread, human behaviors, and interventions, few models have incorporated real-world behavioral data on disease perception, limiting their applicability. In this study, we propose an approach to integrate survey data on contact patterns and disease perception into a data-driven compartmental model, by hypothesizing that perceived severity is a determinant of behavioral change.

Arabidopsis plants were grown in white light (400-700 nm) or in white light supplemented with far-red (FR) light peaking at 730 nm. FR-enriched light induced the typical shade avoidance syndrome characterized by enhanced length of seedling hypocotyl and leaf petiole. FR supplementation also caused a noticeable decrease in the carotenoid and chlorophyll content that was attributable to a block of pigment accumulation during plant development.

Cytochromes b5 Occurrence in Viruses Belonging to the Order Megavirales.

Res Sq

October 2024

Biology Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Massachusetts 02543, USA.

Cytochrome b5 is a small electron transport protein that is found in animals, plants, fungi and photosynthetic proteobacteria where it plays key metabolic roles in energy production, lipid and sterol biosynthesis and cytochrome P450 biochemistry. Previously it was shown that a gene encoding a soluble and functional cytochrome b5 protein was encoded in the large double stranded DNA virus OtV2 that infects the unicellular marine green alga , the smallest free-living eukaryote described to-date. This single gene represented a unique finding in the virosphere.
