At over 200 years, the maximum lifespan of the bowhead whale exceeds that of all other mammals. The bowhead is also the second-largest animal on Earth, reaching over 80,000 kg. Despite its very large number of cells and long lifespan, the bowhead is not highly cancer-prone, an incongruity termed Peto's Paradox.

The Hippo pathway controls in organ size and tissue homeostasis through regulating cell growth, proliferation and apoptosis. Phosphorylation of the transcription co-activator YAP (Yes associated protein) and TAZ (Transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif) regulates their nuclear import and therefore their interaction with TEAD (Transcriptional Enhanced Associated Domain). YAP, TAZ and TEADs are dysregulated in several solid cancers making YAP/TAZ-TEAD interaction a new anti-cancer target.

Yet, the influence of multiple local minima on its excited-state behavior remains underexplored. Mono-pyranopterin-containing sulfite-oxidizing enzymes (SOEs), including eukaryotic sulfite oxidases and homologous prokaryotic sulfite dehydrogenases (SDHs), are molybdenum enzymes that exist in almost all forms of life, where they catalyze the direct oxidation of sulfite into sulfate, playing a key role in protecting cells and organisms against sulfite-induced damage. To decipher their catalytic mechanism, we have previously provided structural and spectroscopic evidence for direct coordination of HPO to the Mo atom at the active site of the SDH from the hyperthermophilic bacterium (SDH), mimicking the proposed sulfate-bound intermediate proposed to be formed during catalysis. In this work, by solving the X-ray crystallographic structure of the unbound enzyme, we resolve the changes in the hydrogen bonding network in the molybdenum environment that enable the stabilization of the previously characterized phosphate adduct.

It affects mainly adolescents, but a decreased age at diagnosis has been reported, leading to the definition of a rare form of AN called early-onset or prepubertal anorexia nervosa (EOAN; ORPHA 525738), with reported epidemiological and clinical specificity. Lessons learned, methodologies, and application of tools that have been developed within the context of research on the environmental impacts, health, and safety of nanomaterials (nano-EHS) provide a solid foundation for research on nano/microplastics. In this communication, we summarize key discoveries obtained through major research efforts over the last two decades in the area of nano-EHS that are applicable for the study of micro- and nano-plastics (referred to here more generally as particulate plastics). We focus on how non-equilibrium particle transport processes affect: 1) bio-physico-chemical mechanisms of particle toxicity and determining dose-response relationships; 2) the potential for biouptake, bioaccumulation, translocation, trophic transfer and intergenerational effects of particulate contaminants; 3) extrapolations from laboratory experiments to complex systems and the impact of environmental transformations; 4) the formulation of functional assays as a basis for predicting the impacts of particulate contaminants in complex environments; 5) the relative importance of incidental particles compared with engineered particles and, 6) experience with data platforms, curation, and experimental design.

A theoretical study on electrical current fluctuations in a double quantum dot connected to electronic reservoirs is presented, with the aim of deriving the finite-frequency noise, the Fano factor and the Δ-noise. We establish a general expression for the noise in terms of Green functions in the double quantum dot and self-energies in the reservoirs. This result is then applied to model double quantum dots in various situations.

Rising carbon dioxide emissions are provoking ocean warming and acidification, altering plankton habitats and threatening calcifying organisms, such as the planktonic foraminifera (PF). Whether the PF can cope with these unprecedented rates of environmental change, through lateral migrations and vertical displacements, is unresolved. Here we show, using data collected over the course of a century as FORCIS global census counts, that the PF are displaying evident poleward migratory behaviours, increasing their diversity at mid- to high latitudes and, for some species, descending in the water column.
