Antibiotics play a crucial role in human and animal medical healthcare, but widespread use and overuse of antibiotics poses alarming health and environmental issues. Fluoroquinolones constitute a class of antibiotics that has already become ubiquitous in the environment, and their increasing use and high persistence prompt growing concern. Here we investigated a fungal secretome prepared from the white-rot fungus , which is able to effectively degrade the environmentally persistent fluoroquinolone, levofloxacin.

The molecular diagnosis of type 1 facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD1) relies on the detection of a shortened D4Z4 array at the 4q35 locus. Until recently, the diagnosis of FSHD2 relied solely on the absence of a shortened D4Z4 allele in clinically affected patients. It is now established that most FSHD2 cases carry a heterozygous variant in the SMCHD1 gene.

Objective: Non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, particularly transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), are promising for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), though the mechanisms of their efficacy remain unclear. This study aims to (i) investigate tDCS neurophysiological mechanisms using a personalized multichannel protocol with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and (ii) assess post-tDCS changes in brain connectivity, correlating them with clinical outcomes.
Methods: Seventeen patients with focal DRE underwent three cycles of tDCS over five days, each consisting of 40-minute stimulations targeting the epileptogenic zone (EZ) identified via stereo-EEG.

West Nile Virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) circulate through complex cryptic transmission cycles involving mosquitoes as vectors, birds as amplifying hosts and several mammal species as dead-end hosts. Both viruses can be transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, which can lead to neuroinvasive and potentially fatal disease. Notably, WNV can also be transmitted through blood donations and organ transplants.

Many processes can contribute to the attenuation of the frequently detected and toxic herbicides atrazine and metolachlor in surface water, including photodegradation. Multi-element compound-specific isotope analysis has the potential to decipher between these different degradation pathways as Cl is a promising tool for both pathway identification and a sensitive indicator of degradation for both atrazine and metolachlor. In this study, photodegradation experiments of atrazine and metolachlor were conducted under simulated sunlight in buffered solutions (direct photodegradation) and with nitrate (indirect photodegradation by OH radicals) to determine kinetics, transformation products and isotope fractionation for C, N and for the first time Cl.

Maintaining tightly copper homeostasis is crucial for the survival of all living organisms, in particular microorganisms like bacteria. They have evolved a number of proteins to capture, transport and deliver Cu(I), while avoiding Fenton-like reactions. Some Cu proteins exhibit methionine-rich (Met-rich) domains, whose role remains elusive.

Cohesion can dramatically affect the flow of granular media. In this Letter, thanks to a cohesion-controlled granular material, we propose to investigate experimentally the effect of the cohesion on the discharge from a silo. We use two geometries, a cylindrical silo and a thin rectangular silo, with an adjustable bottom to control the size of the orifice.

We present a locomotion mechanism that uses the stick-slip transition of a soft passive structure with an internal mechanical resonance. The structure is harmonically driven by a global vertical shaking and, because of its resonance dephasing and the threshold response of stick-slip transition, it can either move forward or backward. We establish a relation for the motion acceleration threshold that we experimentally validate.

Efforts to understand radical stability have led to considerable progress in radical chemistry. In this article, we investigated a novel approach to enhancing the radical stability of carbon-centered radicals through space electron delocalization within [2,2]-paracyclophanes. Alkoxyamines possessing a paracyclophane scaffold exploit face-to-face π-π-interactions between the aromatic rings to effectively lower bond dissociation energy (BDE) for NO-C bond homolysis.

Introduction And Aims: Mitochondrial myopathies are rare genetic disorders for which no effective treatment exists. We previously showed that the pharmacological cyclophilin inhibitor cyclosporine A (CsA) extends the lifespan of fast-twitch skeletal muscle-specific mitochondrial transcription factor A knockout (Tfam KO) mice, lacking the ability to transcribe mitochondrial DNA and displaying lethal mitochondrial myopathy. Our present aim was to assess whether the positive effect of CsA was associated with improved in vivo mitochondrial energy production.

The opioid epidemic has emerged in the USA in the late 1990s and widespread to Canada, Australia, and the UK to a lesser extent in the more recent years. At the European level, several studies performed in different European countries have highlighted that prescription opioid use increased substantially over the last decade, and several proxies for misuse show a parallel increasing trend. The French addictovigilance experience on opioid analgesics is a good example of a specific dedicated monitoring, taking into account in a global and multisource perspective, patterns of utilization, population involved in problematic use, ways of acquisition and health complications.

Electronic polarization and dispersion are decisive actors in determining interaction energies between molecules. These interactions have a particularly profound effect on excitation energies of molecules in complex environments, especially when the excitation involves a significant degree of charge reorganization. The direct reaction field (DRF) approach, which has seen a recent revival of interest, provides a powerful framework for describing these interactions in quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) models of systems, where a small subsystem of interest is described using quantum chemical methods and the remainder is treated with a simple MM force field.

Background: The -metric value is generally used as the importance score of a feature (or a set of features) in a classification context. This study aimed to go further by creating a new methodology for multivariate feature selection for classification, whereby the -metric is associated with a specific search direction (and therefore a specific stopping criterion). As three search directions are used, we effectively created three distinct methods.
