Nonadiabatic dynamics simulations complement time-resolved experiments by revealing ultrafast excited-state mechanistic information in photochemical reactions. Understanding the relaxation mechanisms of photoexcited molecules finds application in energy, material, and medicinal research. However, with substantial computational costs, the nonadiabatic dynamics simulations have been restricted to ultrafast timescales, typically less than a few picoseconds, thus neglecting a wide range of photoactivated processes occurring in much longer timescales.

Venous thromboembolism (VT) is a frequent (annual incidence of 1 to 2 per 1,000) and potentially life-threatening (case-fatality rate up to 10%) disease. VT is associated with serious short-term and long-term complications including a recurrence rate of approximately 20% within five years. Anticoagulant therapy, the mainstay of VT treatment, drastically reduces the risk of early VT recurrence, but it exposes patients to a substantial risk of bleeding.

Diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPPs) have attracted attention for their potential applications in organic photovoltaics due to their tunable optical properties and charge-carrier mobilities. In this study, we investigate the excited-state dynamics of a DPP dimer using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. Our results reveal a near-barrierless hydrogen migration state intersection that facilitates ultrafast internal conversion with a lifetime of about 400 fs, leading to fluorescence quenching.

Electrophysiological Monitoring of Asymptomatic Transthyretin Mutation Carriers.

Muscle Nerve

February 2025

Referral Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases and ALS, La Timone University Hospital, Aix-Marseille University, ERN Neuro-NMD, Marseille, France.

Introduction/aims: It is imperative to screen asymptomatic carriers of transthyretin (TTR) mutations to initiate treatment early. The protocol for repeated electrodiagnostic (EDX) assessments over time lacks standardization. Our aim was to report the electrophysiological evolution of a cohort of asymptomatic carriers and to determine which biomarkers were most sensitive to change.

Targeting metabolic dysfunction of CD8 T cells and natural killer cells in cancer.

Nat Rev Drug Discov

December 2024

CIRI, Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie, (Team Lyacts), Univ Lyon, Inserm, U1111, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, CNRS UMR5308 ENS de Lyon, Lyon, France.

The importance of metabolic pathways in regulating immune responses is now well established, and a mapping of the bioenergetic metabolism of different immune cell types is under way. CD8 T cells and natural killer (NK) cells contribute to cancer immunosurveillance through their cytotoxic functions and secretion of cytokines and chemokines, complementing each other in target recognition mechanisms. Several immunotherapies leverage these cell types by either stimulating their activity or redirecting their specificity against tumour cells.

In humans, simple 2D visual displays of launching events ("Michottean launches") can evoke the impression of causality. Direct launching events are regarded as causal, but similar events with a temporal and/or spatial gap between the movements of the two objects, as non-causal. This ability to distinguish between causal and non-causal events is perceptual in nature and develops early and preverbally in infancy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how resistance to PD-L1 inhibitors affects interferon (IFN) signaling and influences secretory changes in tumor cells.
  • It identifies a specific tumor secretome (PTIS) induced by anti-PD-L1 treatment, which can suppress T cell activation and reduce the effectiveness of immune response against tumors.
  • The research emphasizes the need for in vivo resistance models to better understand treatment failures, as the tumor's adaptive secretory changes regulated by type I IFNs play a significant role in evading immune attacks.

During their final transformation, insects emerge from the pupal case and deploy their wings within minutes. The wings deploy from a compact origami structure, to form a planar and rigid blade that allows the insect to fly. Deployment is powered by a rapid increase in internal pressure, and by the subsequent flow of hemolymph into the deployable wing structure.
