A Framework for Adapting Deep Brain Stimulation Using Parkinsonian State Estimates.

Front Neurosci

May 2020

Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University College London, London, United Kingdom.

The mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease (PD) remain poorly understood and are still under debate. This has hindered the development of adaptive DBS (aDBS). For further progress in aDBS, more insight into the dynamics of PD is needed, which can be obtained using machine learning models.

This paper presents the preparation and execution of on-ground static and engine load tests for the composite unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The test was conducted for pre-flight structural strength verification of the remotely piloted aerial target named HORNET, after introducing some structural modifications. The ground tests were performed before the flight test campaign, to ensure the strength and operational safety of the modified structure.

The data from the authors' earlier investigations show that molecules of zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP) added to a lubricant can absorb energy emitted by a solid surface, which is where triboreactions occur. If the lubricant contains structures able to conduct energy, the ZDDP reactions can occur even at a relatively large distance from the solid surface, which should increase the effectiveness of ZDDP as an antiwear additive. The purpose of this paper was to verify the thesis that the tribocatalytic effect depends on the ability of the solid surface to emit electrons/energy and the ability of ordered molecular structures, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), to conduct energy and, most likely, to enhance the energy transfer.

Malaria in the pregnant traveler.

J Travel Med

July 2020

Malaria Branch, Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria, Center for Global Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA, USA.

Pregnant travelers face numerous risks, notably increased susceptibility to or severity of multiple infections, including malaria. Because pregnant women residing in areas non-endemic for malaria are unlikely to have protective immunity, travel to endemic areas poses risk of severe illness and pregnancy complications, such as low birthweight and fetal loss. If travel to malaria-endemic areas cannot be avoided, preventive measures are critical.

Environmental footprinting methods provide a means to relate the environmental externalities of electricity production to electricity consumers. Although several methods have been developed to connect the environmental footprint of electricity generation to end users, estimates produced by these methods are inherently uncertain due to the impossibility of actually tracing electricity from the point of generation to utilization. Previous studies rarely quantify this uncertainty, even though it may fundamentally alter their findings and recommendations.

Maximum loads acting on aircraft structures generally arise when the aircraft is undergoing some form of acceleration, such as during landing. Landing, especially when considering rotorcrafts, is thus crucial in determining the operational load spectrum, and accurate predictions on the actual health/load level of the rotorcraft structure cannot be achieved unless a database comprising the structural response in various landing conditions is available. An effective means to create a structural response database relies on the modeling and simulation of the items and phenomena of concern.

Barely visible impact damage (BVID) is one of the most dangerous types of structural damage in composites, since in most practical cases the application of advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) methods is required to detect and identify it. Due to its character of propagation, there are minor signs of structural damage on a surface, while the internal damage can be broad and complex both in the point of view of fracture mechanisms and resulting geometry of damage. The most common NDT method applied e.

Article Synopsis
  • Evidence shows that inflammation plays a significant role in the outcomes of traumatic brain injury (TBI) affecting both clinical and functional recovery.
  • Many treatments that work well in animal studies do not translate effectively to human clinical trials due to factors like timing and the immune environment.
  • The article aims to highlight immune system components involved in TBI and propose modifiable mechanisms that could enhance treatment outcomes and bridge the gap between animal research and human applications.

Bacillus spore awakening: recent discoveries and technological developments.

Curr Opin Biotechnol

August 2020

Elucidating the mechanistic basis of spore germination and outgrowth remains a difficult challenge with crucial implications in the numerous scientific and engineering disciplines. Omics studies have revealed numerous new biochemical insights and single-spore studies link molecular insights directly with spore heterogeneity behaviors. This field is expected to advance at greater speed with the application of newer omics tools such as metabolomics and ingenious combination of omics with single-spore techniques.

Overlapping pathways between mood and metabolic regulation have increasingly been reported. Although impaired regulation of adiponectin, a major metabolism-regulating hormone, has been implicated in major depressive disorder, its role in seasonal changes in mood and seasonal affective disorder-winter type (SAD), a disorder characterized by onset of mood impairment and metabolic dysregulation (e.g.

Introduction: Large scale radiologic and nuclear disasters are rare; however, recent events such as the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor emergency in Japan and current global political tensions have highlighted the need for health-care providers with expertise in managing radiation injuries. Medical Toxicologists have the ability to collaborate with other specialists in filling this critical role.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey to assess the attitudes, experiences, and knowledge of medical toxicologists through the assistance of the American College of Medical Toxicology.

January 2020

Air Force Institute of Technology, Department of Systems Engineering and Management, Environmental Engineering and Science Program, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, US.

Virus adsorption to colloidal particles is an important issue in the water quality community. Namely, if viruses can quickly and strongly associate to colloids, this can potentially lead to significant implications for the management of biohazardous wastes at water reclamation facilities. This research evaluated the adsorption of bacteriophage MS2 to colloidal suspensions of kaolinite (KAO) and fiberglass (FG).

Increasing evidence incriminates low-grade inflammation in cardiovascular, metabolic diseases, and neuropsychiatric clinical conditions, all important causes of morbidity and mortality. One of the upstream and modifiable precipitants and perpetrators of inflammation is chronic periodontitis, a polymicrobial infection with Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) playing a central role in the disease pathogenesis.

A method for calculating the analytic nonadiabatic derivative coupling terms (DCTs) for spin-orbit multi-reference configuration interaction wavefunctions is reviewed. The results of a sample calculation using a Stuttgart basis for KHe are presented. Additionally, the DCTs are compared with a simple calculation based on the Nikitin's 3 × 3 description of the coupling between the Σ and Π surfaces, as well as a method based on Werner's analysis of configuration interaction coefficients.

Analytic gradients of electronic eigenvalues require one calculation per nuclear geometry, compared to at least 3n + 1 calculations for finite difference methods, where n is the number of nuclei. Analytic nonadiabatic derivative coupling terms (DCTs), which are calculated in a similar fashion, are used to remove nondiagonal contributions to the kinetic energy operator, leading to more accurate nuclear dynamics calculations than those that employ the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, i.e.

A shock propagating through a gas mixture leads to pressure, temperature, and density increases across the shock front. Rankine-Hugoniot relations correlating pre- and post-shock quantities describe a calorically perfect gas but deliver a good approximation for real gases, provided the pre-shock conditions are well characterized with a thermodynamic mixing model. Two classic thermodynamic models of gas mixtures are Dalton's law of partial pressures and Amagat's law of partial volumes.

Phosphors with composition Ca ZnMoO were synthesized at temperatures of 800-1200°C using the solid-state method. Analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns of the Ca ZnMoO powders did not reveal a double perovskite structure. When the synthesis temperature was equal to or higher than 800°C, the synthesized Ca ZnMoO powders revealed a tetragonal structure (CaMoO ) rather than an orthorhombic structure (Ca ZnMoO ) and the cubic structure (Sr ZnMoO ) of a double perovskite.
