Soleus Muscle Single Metastasis from Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Extrahepatic metastases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are associated with poor prognosis, while such lesions in skeletal muscles are extremely rare. A unique case of skeletal metastasis in the soleus muscle in a 76-year-old male patient with HCC is reported. The patient presented with a painful palpable mass in his left calf.

Methods: In total, 6496 fully vaccinated HCP were analysed prospectively from 15 November 2021 to 17 April 2022. Full coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination was defined as a complete primary vaccination series followed by a booster dose at least 6 months later.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Surgical Activities: A Single-Center Experience and Literature Review.

Aim The aim of this article is to investigate the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on our surgical department, which is situated in Athens, Greece, as well as to review published literature on the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on surgical activities in our department.  Material and methods We retrospectively reviewed the surgical procedures that were performed in the surgical department of a tertiary University hospital in Athens, Greece, before and during the pandemic. Furthermore, we performed a literature review evaluating articles on surgical activity and COVID-19 published from the beginning of the pandemic up until the January of 2022 on the PubMed database.

Prosthetic Knee Joint Infection Due to A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Odyssey: A Case Study.

Prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) caused by fungi, although relatively rare, represent a major surgery-related complication. An extremely rare fungal PJI, following revised total knee replacement (TKR) caused by , is reported, and a meticulous review of similar cases is provided. A 74-year-old female, who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty 10 years ago and a revision surgery three weeks ago, presented with signs and symptoms of PJI.

Partial Superficial Parotidectomy Versus Extracapsular Anatomical Dissection for the Treatment of Benign Parotid Tumors.

Objectives: Superficial benign parotid tumors are a common neoplasm of the salivary glands. Different surgical procedures have been applied for partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) and extracapsular dissection (ECD), which are the two predominant surgical techniques. Our study aimed to evaluate PSP versus ECD for benign parotid tumors, in relation to post-operative complications and recurrence rates.

Fungal Periprosthetic Hip Joint Infections.

Fungal hip prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are rare but severe infections. Their incidence has increased in the last decades due to the aging population, as well as due to the increased number of immunosuppressed hosts. The present review of all published fungal PJIs in hip arthroplasties aims to present as much data as possible for both medical and surgical treatment options, so that the best applicable management may be concluded.

Agreement between swept-source optical biometry and Scheimpflug-based tomography in eyes with previous myopic refractive surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the comparability of corneal power measurements, anterior chamber depth (ACD), and white-to-white (WTW) distance between a high-resolution Scheimpflug-based tomography (Pentacam HR; Oculus GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) and a swept-source optical biometry, IOL Master 700; Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) in patients having undergone a myopic refractive surgery.

Methods: This prospective, interinstrument reliability analysis included 31 individuals with a previous myopic laser refractive correction. Standard keratometry and total keratometry (TK) of the flattest and steepest axis of the IOL Master 700 were compared with standard keratometry (simulated keratometry [SimK]), true net power (TNP), equivalent keratometer readings (EKR), and total corneal refractive power of the Pentacam.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability in older adults. The majority of cruciate ligament injuries progress to OA through numerous mechanisms. The aim of this study was to identify the histological changes of cruciate ligaments in OA knees from patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) as well as possible correlations with coronal plate deformities and patients' characteristics.

Lower Limb Paralysis as Initial Presentation of Arterial Embolism Secondary to Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia after Hip Fracture - a Case Report.

Prophylactic anticoagulation (AC) with low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) following hip fracture has reduced the incidence of severe thromboembolic events. However, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) remains a serious complication in these patients. We report an unusual case of thrombosis due to severe HIT in a 75-year-old female patient following intramedullary nailing for a hip fracture.

Fungal Prosthetic Joint Infection in Revised Knee Arthroplasty: An Orthopaedic Surgeon's Nightmare.

Fungal prosthetic joint infections (PJIs), despite the fact that they are rare, represent a devastating complication. Such infections in revised knee arthroplasties pose a unique surgical and medical challenge. A rare case of PJI in revised knee arthroplasty is reported.

Evaluating the efficacy of Quantum Molecular Resonance (QMR) electrotherapy in mixed-type dry eye patients.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the low-power, high-frequency electrical current treatment administered by the Rexon-Eye device, in a cohort of patients affected by mixed-type dry eye disease (DED) of medium to severe level.

Patients And Methods: In this prospective, non-randomized, interventional clinical study, eighteen mixed type DED patients were treated. Treatment was a specific type of electrotherapy, Quantum Molecular Resonance (QMR®), administered by means of the Rexon-Eye® device (Resono Ophthalmic, Sandrigo, Italy) with a protocol of one 20-min session per week, for 4 weeks.

Rhino-Orbital-Cerebral Mycosis and Extranodal Natural Killer or/and T-Cell Lymphoma, Nasal Type.

Background: Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type is a syndrome of middle face destruction with an association to Epstein-Barr virus. Fungi have been recovered from the diseased tissue now and then but were often seen as a lymphoma-associated secondary infection. However, there are ENKTL-NT cases with the recoveries of fungi and complete recovery with antifungal therapy, which are quite similar to rhino-orbital-cerebral mycosis (ROCM) that often confuses the physicians.

MicroRNA-29c-3p in dual-labeled exosome is a potential diagnostic marker of subjective cognitive decline.

Objective: The present study aimed to determine whether peripheral blood neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM)/amphiphysin 1 dual-labeled exosomal proteins and microRNAs (miRs) might serve as a marker for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: This observational, retrospective, multicenter study used a two-stage design conducted in Beijing and Shanghai, China. The subjects included 76 patients with subjective cognitive decline (SCD), 80 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), 76 with dementia of Alzheimer's type (AD), 40 with vascular dementia (VaD), and 40 controls in the discovery stage.

Retrograde Flow Cement Leakage during Kyphoplasty.

To report a rare event of a retrograde flow of cement leakage during balloon kyphoplasty and discuss the possible mechanism. We present a 55-year-old male patient, who underwent a 4-level balloon kyphoplasty for Langerhans histiocytosis that had spread to the spine. With the patient prone under general anesthesia, intrathoracic pressure was raised as a precaution measure to prevent cement embolic complications as a protocol reported elsewhere.
