Transarterial chemo-embolisation of hepatocellular carcinoma: impact of liver function and vascular invasion.

Br J Cancer

February 2017

Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine, University of Liverpool, The Sherrington Building, Ashton Street, Liverpool L69 3GA, UK.

Background: Transarterial chemo-embolisation (TACE) is recommended for patients with BCLC intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma (stage B), particularly in patients with good underlying liver function and minimal symptoms. The hepatoma arterial embolisation prognostic (HAP) score combines measures of liver function and tumour-related factors to offer a simple prognostic scoring system. The Albumin-Bilirubin (ALBI) grade permits assessment of the impact of liver function on survival.

Background: First rib fractures are considered indicators of increased morbidity and mortality in major trauma. However, this has not been definitively proven. Physical activity but not sedentary activity is reduced in primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Rheumatol Int

April 2017

MoveLab, Physical Activity and Exercise Research, Institute of Cellular Medicine and NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Ageing and Chronic Disease, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of physical activity in individuals with primary Sjögren's syndrome (PSS) and its relationship to the clinical features of PSS. To this cross-sectional study, self-reported levels of physical activity from 273 PSS patients were measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-short form (IPAQ-SF) and were compared with healthy controls matched for age, sex and body mass index. Fatigue and other clinical aspects of PSS including disease status, dryness, daytime sleepiness, dysautonomia, anxiety and depression were assessed using validated tools.

Objective: To develop a novel method for capturing the discrepancy between objective tests and subjective dryness symptoms (a sensitivity scale) and to explore predictors of dryness sensitivity.

Methods: Archive data from the UK Primary Sjögren's Syndrome Registry (n = 688) were used. Patients were classified on a scale from -5 (stoical) to +5 (sensitive) depending on the degree of discrepancy between their objective and subjective symptoms classes.

The direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have emerged as a good alternative for the treatment of thromboembolic diseases, and their use in clinical practice is increasing rapidly. The DOACs act by blocking the activity of one single step in the coagulation cascade. These drugs act downstream in the common pathway of the coagulation cascade by directly antagonising the action of thrombin or factor Xa.

Prevalence and burden of comorbidities in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Respir Investig

November 2016

University General Hospital, Department of Thoracic Medicine, Stavrakia, 71110 Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Electronic address:

The classical definition of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) as a lung condition characterized by irreversible airway obstruction is outdated. The systemic involvement in patients with COPD, as well as the interactions between COPD and its comorbidities, justify the description of chronic systemic inflammatory syndrome. The pathogenesis of COPD is closely linked with aging, as well as with cardiovascular, endocrine, musculoskeletal, renal, and gastrointestinal pathologies, decreasing the quality of life of patients with COPD and, furthermore, complicating the management of the disease.

Pathology-based staging for HPV-positive squamous carcinoma of the oropharynx.

Oral Oncol

November 2016

Clinical Professor, Creighton Department of Surgery, Omaha, NE, USA.

Objective: The rapid worldwide rise in incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has generated studies confirming this disease as an entity distinct from traditional OPSCC. Based on pathology, surgical studies have revealed prognosticators specific to HPV-positive OPSCC. The current AJCC/UICC staging and pathologic nodal (pN)-classification do not differentiate for survival, demonstrating the need for new, HPV-specific OPSCC staging.
