Purpose: This study aimed to determine the outcomes and prognostic factors associated with octogenarians who underwent pulmonary resection for lung cancer.
Methods/patients: From 2009 to 2018, 76 octogenarians underwent pulmonary surgery for lung cancer at the Kanazawa Medical University, Japan. They were divided into two groups (early and late octogenarians), and their clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes were investigated.
Aim: Gastric cancer with peritoneum dissemination is intractable with surgical resection. The evaluation of the degree of dissemination using computed tomography (CT) is difficult. We focused on the amount of ascites based on CT findings and established a scaling system to predict these patients' prognoses.

Ectopic pancreas often occurs in the gastrointestinal tract. However, the identification of a mediastinal ectopic pancreas is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of ectopic pancreas of the anterior mediastinum, which was incidentally detected during treatment for pericarditis with widespread ST elevation on electrocardiogram.

Purpose: Quadratus lumborum block (QLB) has recently been used for postoperative analgesia after abdominal surgery. Although there are several approaches to QLB, the effectiveness of intramuscular QLB (QLBi) remains controversial. The aim of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of QLBi for postoperative analgesia after cesarean section with a vertical midline incision.

Introduction: Foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) is a major public health issue worldwide. In 2017, there were more than 5000 fatal choking cases in the USA alone, and it was the fourth leading cause of preventable injury-related death in the home and community. In Japan, FBAO is the leading cause of accidental death and with almost 9000 fatalities annually.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in obstetrics is related to postpartum hemorrhage and has been a leading cause of maternal death. We here report a successful treatment, via damage control surgery (DCS), of a life-threatening massive hemorrhage of more than 20,000 mL due to DIC. A 30-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of atonic bleeding.

Mobile phones are indispensable for daily life, and the adverse effects of the electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by mobile phones have been a great concern. We studied the effects of long-term evolution (LTE) -like EMF for 30 min on an awake electroencephalogram (EEG). Thirty-eight healthy volunteers, aged 20-36 years old, participated in this study.

Objective: We report a rare case of symptomatic vertebral and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries (VA-PICA) aneurysm-caused ipsilateral hemifacial spasm (HFS) for which coil embolization of the aneurysm with the assistance of abnormal muscle response (AMR) monitoring was effective.
Case Presentation: A 62-year-old woman presented with left HFS. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a saccular aneurysm of the left VA-PICA which compressed the seventh cranial nerve at its root exit zone (REZ).

Background: Patients with chronic occlusion of the celiac artery and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) are often asymptomatic, and occlusion may be caused by arteriosclerosis or median arcuate ligament compression. Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is occasionally performed for patients with celiac artery occlusion; however, reports on patients with SMA occlusion are rare. We report a patient with cholangiocarcinoma and total atherosclerotic occlusion of the SMA without preoperative stenting or bypass.

Background: This study aims to compare the Bouchama heatstroke (B-HS) and Japanese Association for Acute Medicine heatstroke (JAAM-HS) criteria with regard to the diagnosis and prediction of mortality and neurological status of heatstroke patients.
Methods: This multicenter observational study recruited eligible patients from the emergency departments of 110 major hospitals in Japan from 1 July to 30 September, 2014.
Results: A total of 317 patients (median age, 65 years; interquartile range, 39-80 years) were included and divided into the B-HS, JAAM-HS, and non-HS groups, with each group consisting of 97, 302, and 15 patients, respectively.

Background: Continuous blood pressure monitoring is essential in the management of patients in critical conditions, as well as those under anesthesia. However, continuous blood pressure monitoring requires insertion of a catheter into the radial artery. Thus, continuous noninvasive arterial blood pressure monitoring would be ideal.

Clinicians are increasingly recognizing impulse control disorders (ICDs) as a complication of dopaminergic treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD). Considering the pivotal role of dopamine in reward information processing, ICDs may originate from dysregulation of reward-oriented behavior, and the behavioral changes may be reflected in shifts of psychological risk preference during decision-making. We used a behavioral economics paradigm to evaluate quantitatively the risk preferences of PD patients in levodopa on and off states.

We initiated the first multi-institutional prospective study of accelerated partial breast irradiation for early breast cancer in Japan. Our early clinical results showed that the treatment methods were technically reproducible between institutions and showed excellent disease control at a median follow-up of 26 months in our previous report. At present, total 46 patients from six institutions underwent the treatment regimen from October 2009 to December 2011, and the median follow-up time was 60 months (range, 57-67 months).

Purpose: Heat stroke (HS) induces disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC); however, the prognostic significance of DIC in patients with HS has not yet been fully assessed in large populations. The aim of this study was to examine the prognostic significance of DIC in patients with HS using a nationwide registry.

The purpose of this research was to measure accurate patient entrance skin dose and maximum skin absorbed dose (MSD) to prevent radiation skin injuries in percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs). We directly measured the MSD on 50 PCIs by using multiple radiophotoluminescence glass dosimeters and a modified dosimetry gown. Also, we analysed the correlation between the MSD and indirect measurement parameters, such as fluoroscopic time (FT), dose-area product (DAP) and cumulative air kerma (C-AK).
