Background: The population of pregnant women with schizophrenia is increasing. Managing schizophrenia during pregnancy poses unique challenges due to the potential effects of second-generation antipsychotics on maternal mental health and fetal development and changes in drug pharmacokinetics. Evidence on how physiological changes during pregnancy affect the levels of second-generation antipsychotics, particularly lurasidone, is limited.

fusion is found in < 1% of de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases and confers a poor prognosis. This Japanese nationwide survey analyzed patients with AML ( = 22) and mixed phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL) ( = 10) with t(9;22) or who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) between 2002 and 2018. The 3-year overall survival (OS) rates were 81.

Department of Gastroenterological and Transplant Surgery Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences Hiroshima University, Hiroshima University Hiroshima Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the variability of anti-tumor effects of natural killer (NK) cells, specifically through a liver immune status index (LISI) that predicts low expression of TRAIL, a protein linked to tumor cell destruction.
  • Researchers analyzed liver NK cells from 40 donors and created the LISI using logistic regression to assess its predictive capability in a larger cohort of 586 patients who underwent liver surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
  • Findings showed that LISI is a strong independent predictor of cancer recurrence risk, especially in high-risk patients, outperforming other common evaluation indices in those with vascular invasion.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed outcomes of 151 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients with the rare genetic alteration der(1;7)(q10;p10) after undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT).
  • Results showed that patients with der(1;7)(q10;p10) had significantly better transplant outcomes compared to 853 patients with monosomy 7 or chromosome 7q deletion (-7/del(7q)).
  • Factors like additional chromosomal abnormalities and poor performance status were found to impact survival in the der(1;7)(q10;p10) group, indicating that allo-SCT is a viable treatment option for these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the height, weight, and BMI of children conceived through different methods, including fresh and frozen embryo transfers, natural conception, and less aggressive fertility treatments at the age of 6.
  • A total of 8149 children were surveyed, with a focus on 3299 term singletons divided into four groups: natural conception (NC), non-assisted reproductive technology (non-ART), fresh embryo transfer (FreET), and frozen embryo transfer (FET).
  • The results showed that children from the FreET group were 1.0 cm taller than those from the non-ART group by age 6, but there were no significant differences in measurements among the other groups.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated cases of copper deficiency leading to low serum copper levels and cytopenia in adult patients at a hospital from March 2014 to March 2021.
  • - Of the 15 patients diagnosed, 73% had bicytopenia while 27% had pancytopenia, and 60% underwent bone marrow examinations, revealing specific morphologic changes linked to copper deficiency.
  • - Treatment with copper supplements led to improvements, as 73% of treated patients achieved normal copper levels and 53% showed hematological recovery, highlighting the need to consider copper deficiency in unexplained cytopenia cases.

Background And Aim: The causal relationship between () infection and gastric cancer has been established. Although the magnitude of the carcinogenic effect of is the next concern, it has not been sufficiently evaluated in Japan. Spontaneous disappearance of infection may have provoked underestimation of the carcinogenic effect of the infection.

Purpose: To assess normal fertilization, clinical pregnancy, and live birth rates after the use of microscopic epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA).

Methods: One-hundred-and-sixty azoospermic participants who underwent MESA were evaluated. The MESA was performed by using a micropuncture method with a micropipette.

Case: A case of Leydig cell tumor, associated with azoospermia, is presented.

Outcome: The levels of sex hormones obviously were decreased, including luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), with elevated testosterone. Computed tomography revealed no adrenal gland tumor, but a significant calcification in the right scrotal content was observed.

Aim: We aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) and doxorubicin therapy in a mouse osteosarcoma cell line (LM8 cells) in vitro.

Materials And Methods: The effects of PEMF (5 mT, 200 Hz) of different durations and doxorubicin on the proliferative activity of LM8 cells were measured by the MTT assay. Apoptotic-related factors such as cell-cycle phase, mitochondrial membrane potential, and caspase 3/7 activity were investigated using 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining and apoptosis kits.

This study investigates the prolonged effects of physiological responses induced by acute stress on risk-taking in decision-making. Participants were divided into a Stress group (N = 14) and a Control group (N = 12). The Trier Social Stress Test was administered as an acute stressor, and reading was administered as a control task; thereafter, participants performed a decision-making task in which they needed to choose a sure option or a gamble option in Gain and Loss frame trials 2 h after (non-) exposure to the stressor.

We present a case of a 32-year-old diabetic woman with Prader-Willi syndrome who developed severe ketoacidosis caused by a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, a novel class of antihyperglycemic agents, during a strict low-carbohydrate diet. At admission, a serum glucose level of 191 mg/dL was relatively low, though laboratory evaluations showed severe ketoacidosis. This is the first report of ketoacidosis caused by a SGLT2 inhibitor.

The properties of constitutive promoters within adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors have not yet been fully characterized. In this study, AAV vectors, in which enhanced GFP expression was directed by one of the six constitutive promoters (human β-actin, human elongation factor-1α, chicken β-actin combined with cytomegalovirus early enhancer, cytomegalovirus (CMV), simian virus 40, and herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase), were constructed and introduced into the HCT116, DLD-1, HT-1080, and MCF-10A cell lines. Quantification of GFP signals in infected cells demonstrated that the CMV promoter produced the highest GFP expression in the six promoters and maintained relatively high GFP expression for up to eight weeks after infection of HCT116, DLD-1, and HT-1080.

Background: The aim was to retrospectively assess the results of treatment of upper urinary tract stones with the Sonolith vision manufactured by EDAP, and purchased in 2004.

Methods: The subjects were 226 Japanese patients who underwent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) alone as an initial treatment and could be followed up for at least 3 months, selected from 277 candidate patients who underwent this therapy between 2004 and 2006. Treatment effect was evaluated by kidney, ureter, and bladder X-ray or renal ultrasonography at 1 and 3 months after treatment.
