BMP signaling is critical for many biological processes. Therefore, small molecules that modulate BMP signaling are useful for elucidating the function of BMP signaling and treating BMP signaling-related diseases. Here, we performed a phenotypic screening in zebrafish to examine the in vivo effects of N-substituted-2-amino-benzoic acid analogs NPL1010 and NPL3008 and found that they affect BMP signaling-dependent dorsal-ventral (D-V) patterning and bone formation in zebrafish embryos.

Halophilic/halotolerant myxobacteria are extremely rare bacteria but an important source of novel bioactive secondary metabolites as drug leads. A slightly halophilic myxobacterium, "" SMH-27-4, the producer of the antifungal antibiotic miuraenamide A, was considered to represent a novel genus. This study aimed to use the whole-genome sequence of this difficult-to-culture bacterium to provide genomic evidence supporting its taxonomy and to explore its potential as a novel secondary metabolite producer and its predicted gene functions.

Scour ponds from unusually large tsunamis cut across the crest of a beach ridge in Kiritappu marsh, eastern Hokkaido. No fewer than ten of these ponds were imaged by photogrammetry as elongate topographic depressions as large as 5 m by 30 m. Sediments in these ponds are underlain by unconformities that were detected with ground-penetrating radar and observed directly in cores and a slice sample.

Although dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) is an important nutrient in the hydrosphere, it is difficult to quantitatively clarify the dynamics of DIP in the hydrosphere using the δO value of DIP as a tracer. In this study, we quantified the triple oxygen isotopic compositions (Δ'O) of DIP relative to VSMOW with the reference line with a slope of 0.528 as an additional tracer to clarify the sources and dynamics of DIP in the hydrosphere.

We present an algorithm for evaluating analytic nuclear energy gradients of the state-averaged density matrix renormalization group complete-active-space self-consistent field (SA-DMRG-CASSCF) theory based on the newly derived coupled-perturbed (CP) DMRG-CASSCF equations. The Lagrangian for the conventional SA-CASSCF analytic gradient theory is extended to the SA-DMRG-CASSCF variant that can fully consider a whole set of constraints on the parameters of multi-root canonical matrix product states formed at all the DMRG block configurations. An efficient algorithm to solve the CP-DMRG-CASSCF equations for determining the multipliers was developed.

This study measures consumer preferences for 11 sustainable dairy activities and examines the differences in preferences among five countries: the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Japan. A case 1 best-worst scaling is used to evaluate greenhouse gas emissions, fertilizer application, soil management, water management, biodiversity, working environment, animal care, wastes, market development, rural communities, and product safety and quality. Consumers across countries have diverse preferences for sustainable dairy farming activities, which may be related to the COVID-19 pandemic and social attention toward the environment and agriculture.

Low-aberration ExB deflector optics for scanning electron microscopy.

To suppress aberrations in the signal electron optics of a scanning electron microscope, we propose ExB deflector (deflector with superimposed electric and magnetic fields) optics that cancel the aberrations generated during large-angle deflection. This improves the resolution of the angle or position of the signal electrons on the sample surface, allowing them to be discriminately detected. The proposed optics consist of two ExB deflectors and a transfer system with two 4-f systems, or systems that have four times the focal length, placed between them.

Septate junctions (SJs) evolved as cell-cell junctions that regulate the paracellular barrier and integrity of epithelia in invertebrates.
