The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

The purpose of this study was to compare the neuromuscular activation patterns of the individual muscles of the quadriceps femoris (QF), including the vastus intermedius (VI), during isokinetic concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) contractions. Thirteen healthy men performed maximum isokinetic CON and ECC knee extensions at angular velocities of 30, 90, and 120°/sec at knee joint angles from 80 to 180° (180° = full extension). Borazine Promoted Growth of Highly Oriented Thin Films.

We report on a phenomenon, where thin films sputter-deposited on single-crystalline AlO(0001) substrates exposed to borazine─a precursor commonly used for the synthesis of hexagonal boron nitride layers─are more highly oriented than those grown on bare AlO(0001) under the same conditions. We observed this phenomenon in face-centered cubic Pd, body-centered cubic Mo, and trigonal TaC thin films grown on AlO(0001). Interestingly, intermittent exposure to borazine during the growth of TaC thin films on TaC yields better crystallinity than direct deposition of monolithic TaC.

COVID-19 triggered residential behavioral changes and electricity consumption of detached houses in Japan.

Many studies conducted previously have reported that due to lockdowns or stay-at-home orders associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020 residential power consumption has increased in countries, particularly in cities worldwide. This study compared the power consumption of 1,339 detached houses in Japan over the past three years as well as a year after the pandemic and analyzed living behavioral changes in the 12 months after the pandemic using a questionnaire survey of occupants. As of March 2021, which is after 12 months of the beginning of the pandemic, it was confirmed that the way of life had returned to almost normal, and as a factor in increasing consumption, working from home would remain the only behavioral change that may take root in Japanese society.

We examined neuronal responses of hypothalamic melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) to background color in the self-fertilizing fish, Kryptolebias marmoratus. Fish were individually reared in lidless white or black cylindrical plastic containers for 15 days. The number of MCH-immunoreactive (ir) cell bodies in the nucleus lateralis tuberis (NLT) of the hypothalamus was significantly greater in the white-acclimated fish, while no significant differences were observed in the nucleus anterior tuberis (NAT) of the hypothalamus.
