Complex plant responses to drought and heat stress under climate change.

Plant J

March 2024

Department of Applied Biological Chemistry, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo, 1-1-1 Yayoi, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, 113-8657, Japan.

Global climate change is predicted to result in increased yield losses of agricultural crops caused by environmental conditions. In particular, heat and drought stress are major factors that negatively affect plant development and reproduction, and previous studies have revealed how these stresses induce plant responses at physiological and molecular levels. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of current knowledge concerning how drought, heat, and combinations of these stress conditions affect the status of plants, including crops, by affecting factors such as stomatal conductance, photosynthetic activity, cellular oxidative conditions, metabolomic profiles, and molecular signaling mechanisms.

Does the circadian clock keep running under such hypothermic states as daily torpor and hibernation? This fundamental question has been a research subject for decades but has remained unsettled. We addressed this subject by monitoring the circadian rhythm of clock gene transcription and intracellular Ca in the neurons of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), master circadian clock, under a cold environment. We discovered that the transcriptional and Ca rhythms are maintained at 22°C-28°C, but suspended at 15°C, accompanied by a large Ca increase.

In this study, we performed signal analysis based on instantaneous amplitude and phase of sarcomeric oscillations, which are generated by skeletal muscle under constant calcium concentration conditions and in which sarcomeres repeatedly contract and relax autonomously. In addition to the changes in sarcomere length that have been attracting attention, we named the Z-line oscillations that partition sarcomeres sarcosynced oscillations, and analyzed their instantaneous amplitude and phase. As a result, the behavior of pairs of sarcosynced oscillations and sarcomeric oscillations, which are produced when propagating waves propagate in one direction or collide, was clearly visualized.

Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences, Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309 USA.

The Sun's axisymmetric large-scale flows, differential rotation and meridional circulation, are thought to be maintained by the influence of rotation on the thermal-convective motions in the solar convection zone. These large-scale flows are crucial for maintaining the Sun's global magnetic field. Over the last several decades, our understanding of large-scale motions in the Sun has significantly improved, both through observational and theoretical efforts.

A first DMRG/CASSCF-CASPT2 study of a series of paradigmatic {FeNO}, {FeNO}, and {FeNO} heme-nitrosyl complexes has led to substantial new insight as well as uncovered key shortcomings of the DFT approach. By virtue of its balanced treatment of static and dynamic correlation, the calculations have provided some of the most authoritative information available to date on the energetics of low- versus high-spin states of different classes of heme-nitrosyl complexes. Thus, the calculations indicate low doublet-quartet gaps of 1-4 kcal/mol for {FeNO} complexes and high singlet-triplet gaps of ≳20 kcal/mol for both {FeNO} and {FeNO} complexes.

The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) pulse and surge are considered to be generated by arcuate kisspeptin/neurokinin B/dynorphin A (KNDy) neurons and anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV) kisspeptin neurons, respectively, in female rodents. The majority of KNDy and AVPV kisspeptin neurons express κ-opioid receptors (KORs, encoded by Oprk1) in female rodents. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effect of a conditional Oprk1-dependent Kiss1 deletion in kisspeptin neurons on the luteinizing hormone (LH) pulse/surge and fertility using Kiss1-floxed/Oprk1-Cre rats, in which Kiss1 was deleted in cells expressing or once expressed the Oprk1/Cre.

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University, 1201 Welch Road, Stanford, CA 94305, USA. Electronic address:

Endotherms can survive low temperatures and food shortage by actively entering a hypometabolic state known as torpor. Although the decrease in metabolic rate and body temperature (Tb) during torpor is controlled by the brain, the specific neural circuits underlying these processes have not been comprehensively elucidated. In this study, we identify the neural circuits involved in torpor regulation by combining whole-brain mapping of torpor-activated neurons, cell-type-specific manipulation of neural activity, and viral tracing-based circuit mapping.

Department of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo, Yayoi, Tokyo 113-8657, Japan.

Carbon dioxide and water vapor exchanges between tropical forest canopies and the atmosphere through photosynthesis, respiration, and evapotranspiration (ET) influence carbon and water cycling at the regional and global scales. Their inter- and intra-annual variations are sensitive to seasonal rhythms and longer-timescale tropical climatic events. In the present study, we assessed the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influence on ET and on the net ecosystem exchange (NEE), using eddy-covariance flux observations in a Bornean rainforest over a 10-y period (2010-2019) that included several El Niño and La Niña events.
