August 2018

Department of Plant Nutrition, Estación Experimental de Aula Dei, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Zaragoza, Spain.

Iron and Zn deficiencies are worldwide nutritional disorders that can be alleviated by increasing the metal concentration of rice ( L.) grains bio-fortification approaches. The overproduction of the metal chelator nicotianamine (NA) is among the most effective ones, but it is still unclear whether this is due to the enrichment in NA itself and/or the concomitant enrichment in the NA derivative 2'-deoxymugineic acid (DMA).

Department of Plant Production and Forestry Science, School of Agrifood and Forestry Science and Engineering (ETSEA), University of Lleida-Agrotecnio Center, Av. Alcalde Rovira Roure 191, 25198, Lleida, Spain.

The first committed step in the endosperm starch biosynthetic pathway is catalyzed by the cytosolic glucose-1-phosphate adenylyl transferase (AGPase) comprising large and small subunits encoded by the OsAPL2 and OsAPS2b genes, respectively. OsAPL2 is expressed solely in the endosperm so we hypothesized that mutating this gene would block starch biosynthesis in the endosperm without affecting the leaves. We used CRISPR/Cas9 to create two heterozygous mutants, one with a severely truncated and nonfunctional AGPase and the other with a C-terminal structural modification causing a partial loss of activity.

Department of Crop and Forest Sciences and AGROTECNIO (Center for Research in Agrotechnology), University of Lleida, Av. Rovira Roure 191, 25198 Lleida, Spain. Electronic address:

Deleterious effects of heat on crop yields are well documented and the occurrence of heat stresses will likely be a major constraint to achieving increased yields of major crops. Thus, agronomic and genetic strategies for increased resilience to high temperatures will be necessary. Much of the work done on this area has been focused to identify genetic sources of increased resilience and much less has been done on the crop ecology side.

December 2018

Tecnologico de Monterrey, Escuela de Ingenieria y Ciencias, Centro de Biotecnología FEMSA, Av. Eugenio Garza Sada 2501 Sur, Col. Tecnológico, 64849 Monterrey, Mexico.

Ultrasound (US) was applied as a pre-treatment in hydrated soybeans (HSB) and soybean slurry (SBS) during soymilk elaboration process to evaluate the feasibility of increasing the isoflavone content (IC) in the resultant soymilk. A predictive model and optimum US processing conditions were obtained by response surface methodology (RSM) using a three-level-three-factor Box-Behnken statistical design (BBD) in which US amplitude (50, 75, and 100%), temperature (30, 45, and 60 °C), and time (20, 40, and 60 min) were selected as independent variables. Most of the US treatments applied in the HSB or SBS caused a significant increase (3-62%) in the total IC of the obtained soymilks over the control soymilk (6.

Unexpected synergistic HIV neutralization by a triple microbicide produced in rice endosperm.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

August 2018

Department of Plant Production and Forestry Science, School of Agrifood and Forestry Science and Engineering, University of Lleida-Agrotecnio Center, 25198 Lleida, Spain;

The transmission of HIV can be prevented by the application of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies and lectins. Traditional recombinant protein manufacturing platforms lack sufficient capacity and are too expensive for developing countries, which suffer the greatest disease burden. Plants offer an inexpensive and scalable alternative manufacturing platform that can produce multiple components in a single plant, which is important because multiple components are required to avoid the rapid emergence of HIV-1 strains resistant to single microbicides.

Descriptive study for culling and mortality in five high-producing Spanish dairy cattle farms (2006-2016).

Acta Vet Scand

July 2018

Departament de Ciència Animal, ETSEA, University of Lleida, Av. Alcalde Rovira Roure 191, E25198, Lleida, Spain.

Background: High turnover rate in dairy farms due to culling and mortality is associated with poor animal welfare, an increase in production costs and lower economic benefits for the dairy farm. Understanding cow elimination better would help to formulate specific prevention measures and improve the efficiency of milk production in dairy farms. Culling and mortality data from five standard high-producing dairy farms in Spain were analysed over a period of 11 years (2006-2016).

We assessed the effectiveness of a biofortified maize line (4BtxHC) which accumulates high levels of antioxidant carotenoids that also expressed the insecticidal Cry1Ac Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) gene against the European corn borer Ostrinia nubilalis. This line had been previously engineered to accumulate carotenoids specifically in the seed endosperm, whereas the Bt gene was expressed constitutively. The concentrations of Bt toxin (Cry 1Ac) in the leaves of the 4Bt and 4BtxHC lines were not significantly different at 47±6 μg/g of fresh weight (FW); neither were they in the kernels of both lines (35±3 μg/g FW).

Instituto de Agrobiotecnología (IdAB), Universidad Pública de Navarra-CSIC-Gobierno de Navarra, Campus de Arrosadía, 31192, Mutilva Baja, Spain.

Foreseen climate change is expected to impact on grape composition, both sugar and pigment content. We tested the hypothesis that interactions between main factors associated with climate change (elevated CO, elevated temperature, and water deficit) decouple sugars and anthocyanins, and explored the possible involvement of vegetative area, photosynthesis, and grape C uploading on the decoupling. Tempranillo grapevine fruit-bearing cuttings were exposed to CO (700 vs.

Our objectives were to develop an economic model to estimate the economic impact of twinning in dairy cows and to evaluate management strategies to mitigate the negative economic impact of twinning in dairy herds. A probabilistic tree considering spontaneous embryo reduction, early pregnancy loss, abortion, metritis, retained placenta, and culling rate at 120 d of the second, at the end of the second, and at the end of the third lactation was developed for a single pregnancy; we also developed 3 management options upon diagnosis of a twin pregnancy: (1) do nothing, (2) induce abortion using PGF, or (3) attempt manual embryo reduction. A value was given to each branch of the tree by simulating cow states on a farm for 1,400 d to encompass 4 consecutive lactations.

The implementation of the Ecosystem Services (ES) framework (including supply and demand) should be based on accurate spatial assessments to make it useful for land planning or environmental management. Despite the inherent dependence of ES assessments on the spatial resolution at which they are conducted, the studies analyzing these effects on ES supply and their relationships are still scarce. To study the influence of the spatial level of analysis on ES patterns and on the relationships among different ES, we selected seven indicators representing ES supply and three variables that describe forest cover and biodiversity for Catalonia (NE Iberian Peninsula).

Hydroxytyrosol (HT) and its derivatives represent the minor components of Virgin Olive Oil (VOO) that are of great interest for their pharmacological properties and among the most widely researched natural antioxidant compounds. In this review, the occurrence and metabolic fate of HT and its precursors are presented prior to discussing its beneficial effects on health. Bioavailability studies show that the metabolites detected in plasma depend on the model used (animal or human), the HT source (simple molecule or complex precursors) and the dose administered.

Intraspecific variation in biomass production responses to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) could influence tree species' ecological and evolutionary responses to climate change. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying genotypic variation in responsiveness to eCO2 remain poorly understood. In this study, we grew 17 Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.

Article Synopsis
  • A global trend of woody thickening has been linked to increasing atmospheric CO levels, but few field experiments have tested this claim.
  • The study used a Free Air CO Enrichment experiment to assess how elevated CO levels affect woody plant recruitment, seedling growth, and resprouting in a eucalypt-dominated grassy woodland.
  • Findings revealed that while juvenile recruitment occurred, elevated CO did not enhance recruitment rates, seedling biomass, or resprouting, suggesting that atmospheric CO increases alone may not drive woody thickening in these ecosystems.

Stomatal response to environmental conditions forms the backbone of all ecosystem and carbon cycle models, but is largely based on empirical relationships. Evolutionary theories of stomatal behaviour are critical for guarding against prediction errors of empirical models under future climates. Longstanding theory holds that stomata maximise fitness by acting to maintain constant marginal water use efficiency over a given time horizon, but a recent evolutionary theory proposes that stomata instead maximise carbon gain minus carbon costs/risk of hydraulic damage.
