Selection for body weight induces differences in exploratory behavior and learning in mice.

Mice that were selected for over 108 generations for body weight at the postnatal (PN) day 21 were examined in the open field (OF) test and in the Lashley maze (LM) for their exploratory behavior and spatial learning. Light (L), heavy (C) and control (K) lines of mice in three age groups: PN-21, PN-56 and PN-90, were tested once in the OF and three times in the LM. During the session in the OF the L mice displayed a steady increase of behavioral activity (sum of locomotion and rearing, climbing, sniffing, and grooming acts), whereas mice C and K habituated in the last stage.

Influence of dexamethasone on some cellular aspects of the immune system in cats.

In view of the frequent use of glucocorticoids in the treatment of cats, we studied the effect of dexamethasone on their immunological system. The phagocytic activity and oxidative burst of neutrophils and monocytes were evaluated by cytometric analysis using commercial kits and the subpopulations of lymphocytes were assessed. Neutrophilia and monocytosis reduced phagocytic activity, as shown from the number of phagocytized bacteria, and variations in the intensity of the oxidative burst in activated neutrophils and monocytes were observed.

The concentrations of AFP were evaluated in the sera from groups of healthy dogs and of dogs with multicentric lymphoma, before and while receiving chemotherapy. The concentration of AFP was highest in the affected dogs, especially during the fifth stage of lymphoma. Chemotherapy caused a decrease in AFP serum concentration, during both the induction and the maintenance phases of treatment, when compared to the same animals before therapy.

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of an oil preparation with increased n-3 fatty acids content on the serum lipid profile and clinical condition of cats with miliary dermatitis. The studies were performed on 22 cats of various breeds and both sexes, aged between 3 and 7 years, that had been fed a balanced diet, based on beef meat for the previous 6 months. The animals were divided into four groups: I, five clinically healthy cats; II, five clinically healthy cats, receiving 1 ml of oil preparation with food for 6 weeks; III, seven nonpruritic cats with miliary dermatitis, without treatment; and group IV, five nonpruritic cats with miliary dermatitis, receiving 1 ml of oil preparation per day with food for 6 weeks.

The influence of halogens and metals on the electronic system of the aromatic ring in lithium, sodium and potassium complexes with p-halogenobenzoic acids has been investigated by means of (13)C and (1)H NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy and semi-empirical calculations. It has been shown that ionic potentials and electronegativities of halogens and metals are the main factors responsible for perturbations of the electronic charge distribution in the ring.

In conscious sheep, beta-endorphin (1 and 2 micrograms/kg) administered into the third cerebral ventricle caused psychomotor excitability and a significant inhibition of the frequency of rumen contractions. The amplitude of the first rumen contractions, following immediately after the end of endorphin infusion, and the average amplitude of primary rumen contractions were also inhibited. De-efferentiation at the level of the hypothalamus prevented both the inhibitory effect of beta-endorphin on the frequency of rumen contractions and the drug-induced psychomotor excitability.

The effect of central sympathectomy by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) on the response to morphine in conscious sheep.

When morphine, an opioid mu-agonist, was administered in vivo into the third cerebral ventricle (ICV) of conscious sheep at 20 and 40 micrograms/kg body weight, it caused psychomotor excitability for 2-3 h and a significant decrease in the reticuloruminal frequency for 45 min and in the mean amplitude of the primary contractions for 65 min. From 60 min after infusion, the same doses of morphine caused a significant increase in the average amplitude of the contractions for 45 min. This suggests that an inhibitory mu-opioid acceptor is involved in the central control of forestomach motility and general behaviour in sheep.
