Obestatin stimulates the secretion of pancreatic juice enzymes through a vagal pathway in anaesthetized rats - preliminary results.

Obestatin is a 23 amino acid peptide derived from the preproghrelin precursor, and originally purified from the rat stomach mucosa. It was shown that obestatin may counteract the effects of its sister peptide, ghrelin, on food intake and gastrointestinal motility but the other roles in controlling the gastrointestinal function remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of exogenous obestatin on the secretion of pancreatic juice.

Application of solid-phase extraction to determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sewage sludge extracts.

The study presents the efficiency of sewage sludge sample clean-up with the application of SPE columns with various types of adsorbents. Six columns were tested: C8-octyl, C18 PolarPlus, C18-octadecyl, silicagel (SG), phenyl, cyano. The highest efficiency of recovery was observed for C18-octadecyl.

Floral longevity and nectar secretion of Platanthera chlorantha (Custer) Rchb. (Orchidaceae).

Flowering and nectar secretion were studied in Platanthera chlorantha in two years. Nectar was secreted and accumulated in this orchid's spur, originating from part of the labellum. The nectary spur was, on average, 32 mm long.

Heat shock proteins in health and disease.

Heat shock proteins (hsp) are highly conserved and abundant proteins essential for cellular viability. They are constitutively expressed under normal growth conditions of cells, playing a role as molecular chaperones. Expression of hsp appears during mammalian embryogenesis.

In the chicken, maternal antibodies are transferred into the egg and subsequently transported into the developing embryo. IgG (called IgY) is the primary immunoglobulin isotype of the egg yolk. Their level in serum depends on the correct function of immunological system in laying hens.

Biological indicators for the assessment of human exposure to organophosphorous compounds.

Unlabelled: The aim of the present study is to review selected biological effects of organophosphorous compounds used as pesticides and to discuss their significance in terms of occupational exposure. The results of a long-term study of the red cells and plasma ChE in group of workers engaged in the production of pesticides are also presented. Cholinesterase activity in plasma and red blood cells was determined spectrophotometrically by the Ellman modified method.
