Objective: The current fertilization methods for Chinese yam are uneconomic and unfriend to environment. A rational one is very important to achieve desired balance of high yield of Chinese yam, economic and friend to environment. Here, we studied the effects of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) fertilizers on the yield of 'Qinfeng' Chinese yam in shallow-groove directional cultivation.

Article Synopsis
  • Strain FJAT-49705, a Gram-stain-positive, motile rod, was isolated from citrus rhizosphere soil and thrives best at 30 °C and pH 7.0 with 2% NaCl.
  • Its genetic analysis shows a 99.7% similarity to strain FJAT-25496, but it does not meet the criteria for being the same species based on average nucleotide identity (ANI) values.
  • The strain's unique features, including its lipid composition and fatty acids, led to the proposal of FJAT-49705 as a new species in its genus, designated sp. nov.

Two alkaliphilic strains, designated FJAT-45086 and FJAT-45122, were isolated from alkali soli in Nima County, Tibet, China. Both strains were Gram-positive, rod-shaped and shared low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the members of the genus Bacillus. They contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall diamino acid and MK-7 as the menaquinone.

The heterogeneity of avirulent -mutant, virulent wildtype strain FJAT-91 and spontaneous avirulent strain FJAT-1458 were compared and analyzed by using high performance ion-exchange chromatography (HPIEC). Their colony and cell morphologies were observed, and the contents of their extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) were determined. The results showed that the colony and cell morphologies of FJAT-91 were different from the original strain FJAT-91, but were similar to the spontaneous avirulent strain FJAT-1458.

Isolation, identification and cyfluthrin-degrading potential of a novel Lysinibacillus sphaericus strain, FLQ-11-1.

Res Microbiol

October 2014

Institute of Applied Ecology, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Fuzhou, Fujian 350002, China; Key Laboratory of Integrated Pest Management for Fujian-Taiwan Crops, Ministry of Agriculture, China. Electronic address:

Strain FLQ-11-1, isolated from sewage sludge, was able to degrade cyfluthrin and was identified as Lysinibacillus sphaericus based on its morphology, 16S rRNA sequence and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analyses. This strain could use cyfluthrin as its carbon or nitrogen source. Response surface methodology (RSM) analysis showed that the optimum conditions for degradation were at pH 7.

Conjugation of Bacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxin (Bt toxin) with other toxins for insect pest control has been proposed as a new efficient strategy with increasing insecticidal toxicity and target range and delay the onset of insect resistance. A modified method was investigated by conjugating Bt toxin with 4"-O-succinoyl abamectin to form a new biocide which was named as BtA. 'Zero-length' cross-linker EDC in combination with NHS activated 4"-O-succinoyl abamectin and extended half-life period of active intermediate for binding to Bt toxin.

4'-Thiosemicarbazonegriseofulvin, a new thiosemicarbazide derivative of griseofulvin, was synthesized and evaluated for its potential in the control of enzymatic browning and postharvest disease of fruits. Browning on fruits is mainly due to the enzymatic oxidation of phenolic compounds catalyzed by tyrosinase. 4'-Thiosemicarbazonegriseofulvin could effectively inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, and its 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) against tyrosinase was determined to be 37.
