Objectives: This study was designed to characterize the prevalence, pattern of herbal use, and related factors among diabetic patients in Tabriz, Iran.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on 322 diabetic patients with random cluster sampling of specialized and subspecialized clinics in Tabriz, Iran. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between predictor variables (sociodemographic and disease-related characteristics and patient preference for treatment type) with herb use Interviews were conducted using a structured questionnaire from October 1, 2022, to April 23, 2023.

Background: The present study evaluated the effects of cranberry juice enriched with omega-3 on inflammatory, oxidative stress, and periodontal status in diabetic patients with periodontal disease.
Methods: Forty-one patients with diabetes (35‒67 years old) and periodontal disease were assigned to four groups: C: control (n=12), I1: omega-3 (n=10, 1 g), I2: cranberry juice (n=9, 200 mL), and I3: cranberry juice enriched with omega-3 (n=10, 200 mL, containing 1 g of omega-3) twice daily for 8 weeks. Serum and salivary total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), serum uric acid, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), clinical attachment loss (CAL), pocket depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and plaque index were evaluated in all the subjects before and after the intervention.

The jellyfish Turritopsis dohrnii (T. Nutricala) is a cnidarian of the Oceaniidae family that lives in the Mediterranean Sea. It is known as the immortal jellyfish since, through a process of cell development called transdifferentiation, it manages to return to a polyp state.

Objective: To characterize the prevalence of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)-defined glucose abnormalities in a large, community-based population of very old adults (>75 years).
Research Design And Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 1,150 older adults with and without diabetes who attended the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (2021-2022). Diabetes was based on a self-reported diagnosis of diabetes by a health care provider, use of diabetes medication, or a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥6.

Introduction: Varicose veins are common in older adults and are associated with adverse clinical outcomes such as deep venous thrombosis. Established risk factors for varicose veins include female sex, height, and obesity, but other risk factors are relatively uncharacterized.
Methods: This was a prospective cohort analysis of 6241 participants aged 66-70 years from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study.

The immune system is a key player in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative disorders. While brain resident immune cell-mediated neuroinflammation and peripheral immune cell (eg, T cell) infiltration into the brain have been shown to significantly contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, the nature and extent of immune responses in the brain in the context of AD and related dementias (ADRD) remain unclear. Furthermore, the roles of the peripheral immune system in driving ADRD pathology remain incompletely elucidated.

Mechanisms underpinning signals from genome wide association studies remain poorly understood, particularly for non-coding variation and for complex diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) where pathogenic mechanisms in multiple different tissues may be disease driving. One approach is to study relevant endophenotypes, a strategy we applied to the UBE2E2 locus where non-coding SNVs are associated with both T2D and visceral adiposity (a pathologic endophenotype). We integrated CRISPR targeting of SNV-containing regions and unbiased CRISPRi screening to establish candidate cis-regulatory regions, complemented by genetic loss of function in murine diet-induced obesity or ex vivo adipogenesis assays.

Repetitive variations, such as oscillation, are ubiquitous in biology. In this mini review, we present a general summary of the ∼24 h circadian clock and provide a fundamental overview of another biological timekeeper that maintains ∼12 h oscillations. This ∼12 h oscillator is proposed to function independently of the circadian clock to regulate ultradian biological rhythms relevant to both protein homeostasis and liver health.

Lassa virus (LASV) belongs to the Arenavirus family. LASV is endemic in several West Africa countries and causes viral hemorrhagic fevers. The Nigeria CDC has reported that an outbreak in 2024 in 28 states has resulted in 7767 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 971 confirmed cases and 166 confirmed deaths up to 11 August.

Importance: Health-related quality of life is a critical health outcome and a clinically important patient-reported outcome in clinical trials. Hearing loss is associated with poorer health-related quality-of-life in older adults.
Objective: To investigate the 3-year outcomes of hearing intervention vs health education control on health-related quality of life.

Introduction: Marmosets spontaneously develop pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) including amyloid beta plaques. However, tau expression in the marmoset brain has been understudied.
Methods: Isoforms of tau were examined by western blot, mass spectrometry, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemical staining.

Background: Underdiagnosis of relevant risk factors has contributed to the increasing stroke incidence in young adults. Blood pressure cut-off values for adolescents are neither sex specific nor based on cardiovascular outcomes.
Methods: This nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study included all Israeli adolescents 16-19 years of age who were medically evaluated before compulsory military service from 1985 to 2013, including routine blood pressure measurements.

Introduction: The aging process of the incarcerated population is a growing concern, yet there are few data on older adults in this demographic group. Hence, this study sought to examine the health status of older adults who are incarcerated in Mexican prisons and its association with the duration of their imprisonment.
Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the 2021 Mexico National Prisons Survey.

Fibroproliferative remodeling of distal pulmonary arterioles is a cornerstone characteristic of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Data from contemporary quantitative imaging suggest that anabolic synthesis of macromolecular substrate, defined here as , is the proximate event that causes vascular remodeling via pathogenic changes to DNA, collagen, cytoskeleton, and lipid membranes. Modifying biomass is achievable but requires tilting the balance in favor of endogenous degradation over synthetic pathways in order to advance the first-ever disease-modifying PAH pharmacotherapy.

The low resolution of spatial transcriptomics data necessitates additional information for optimal use. We developed scDOT, which combines spatial transcriptomics and single cell RNA sequencing to improve the ability to reconstruct single cell resolved spatial maps and identify senescent cells. scDOT integrates optimal transport and expression deconvolution to learn non-linear couplings between cells and spots and to infer cell placements.

Dinoflagellate chromosomes are extraordinary, as their organization is independent of architectural nucleosomes unlike typical eukaryotes and shows a cholesteric liquid crystal state. 5-hydroxymethyluridine (5hmU) is present at unusually high levels and its function remains an enigma in dinoflagellates chromosomal DNA for several decades. Here, we demonstrate that 5hmU contents vary among different dinoflagellates and are generated through thymidine hydroxylation.

As a major virulence factor of , anthrax lethal toxin (LT) is a zinc-dependent metalloproteinase, exerting its cytotoxicity through proteolytic cleavage of the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinases, thereby shutting down the MAPK pathways. Anthrax lethal toxin induces host lethality mostly by targeting the cardiovascular system.

The mechanisms contributing to age-related deterioration of the female reproductive system are complex, however aberrant protein homeostasis is a major contributor. We elucidated exceptionally stable proteins, structures, and macromolecules that persist in mammalian ovaries and gametes across the reproductive lifespan. Ovaries exhibit localized structural and cell-type-specific enrichment of stable macromolecules in both the follicular and extrafollicular environments.
