Background: Canine distemper (CD) is a widespread infectious disease that can severely impact a variety of species in the order Carnivora, as well as non-carnivore species such as non-human primates. Despite large-scale vaccination campaigns, several fatal outbreaks have been reported in wild and domestic carnivore populations. This, in association with expansion of the disease host range and the development of vaccine-escape strains, has contributed to an increased demand for therapeutic strategies synergizing with vaccine programs for effectively controlling canine distemper.

δ-Toxin is a 26 amino acid peptide capable of lysing several mammalian cell types and subcellular structures. Structurally, δ-toxin predominantly exhibits a α-helical secondary structure in membranes but, in aqueous solution, it adopts varying helical content. As no atomic-level data is available for this peptide in aqueous solutions and for the water-to-membrane transition, this work aims to characterize δ-toxin behavior in these conditions through molecular dynamics simulations in triplicates employing four different parameter sets.

In the present work, twelve N-substituted 2-(5-nitro-thiophene)-thiosemicarbazones derivatives (L1-12) were synthesized, characterized and their in vitro cytotoxic and antifungal activities were evaluated against Candida sp. and Cryptococcus neoformans. The probable mechanisms of action have been investigated by sorbitol and ergosterol assays.

Aims: The aim of this study was to determine correlates of physical activity (PA) counseling by health providers of the Brazilian primary care delivery system, for hypertensive and diabetic subjects, as well as correlates of actual leisure-time PA of these subjects.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in random samples of 785 hypertensive and 822 diabetic subjects, in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Relationships between PA counseling and leisure-time PA and explanatory variables were sought through multiple logistic regressions.

Background: Malaria is a public health problem that affects remote areas worldwide. Climate change has contributed to the problem by allowing for the survival of Anopheles in previously uninhabited areas. As such, several groups have made developing news systems for the automated diagnosis of malaria a priority.

However, CIITA expression is tightly controlled and it remains unclear whether distinct non-immune cells differ in this transactivator regulation. Here we describe the development of gene delivery systems capable of promoting the efficient CIITA expression in non-immune cell lines and in primary human cells of an ex vivo skin explant model.

RNA-binding proteins are key regulatory molecules involved primarily in post-transcriptional gene regulation of RNAs. Post-transcriptional gene regulation is critical for adequate cellular growth and survival. Recent reports have shown key interactions between these RNA-binding proteins and other regulatory elements, such as miRNAs and long noncoding RNAs, either enhancing or diminishing their response to RNA stabilization.

Anti-HEV antibodies were detected in animals from abattoir and in farms from northeast Brazil. Our results suggest that HEV is highly disseminated in the swine population and might present a great risk to animal handlers and for consumption of raw or undercooked meat and meat products in northeast Brazil.

CrataBL is a glycoprotein isolated from Crataeva tapia bark, containing two N-glycosylation sites. It has been identified to present lectin activity with some specificity for binding glucose over galactose. However, to date, no information on the effects of glycosylation or CrataBL monosaccharide-binding sites and monosaccharide specificity has been obtained.

Objective: To estimate the risk of microcephaly in babies born to women infected by the Zika virus during pregnancy in Brazil in an epidemic between 2015 and 2016.
Methods: We obtained data on the number of notified and confirmed microcephaly cases in each Brazilian state between November 2015 and October 2016 from the health ministry. For Pernambuco State, one of the hardest hit, weekly data were available from August 2015 to October 2016 for different definitions of microcephaly.

Outbreaks of cutaneous leishmaniasis are relatively common among soldiers involved in nocturnal activities in tropical forests. We investigated the population dynamics of sand flies in a military training camp located in a remnant of Atlantic rainforest in northeastern Brazil, where outbreaks of cutaneous leishmaniasis have sporadically been described. From July 2012 to July 2014, light traps were monthly placed in 10 collection sites, being nine sites located near the forest edge and one near a sheep and goat stable.

Background: Tuberculosis is a serious public health problem worldwide. It is the leading cause of death amongst people living with HIV, and default from tuberculosis (TB) treatment in people living with HIV increases the probability of death. The aim of this study was to estimate the survival probability of people living with HIV who default treatment for TB compared to those who complete the treatment.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected disease closely related to the low levels of social development and a serious public health problem. In this work, we performed an electrochemical detection of Schistosoma mansoni DNA with a self-assembled monolayer of mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) immobilizing nanostructures composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and magnetite nanoparticles (FeO_NPs). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to monitor the hybridization process.

Anti-Flavivirus antibodies are highly cross-reactive and may facilitate Zika virus (ZIKV) infection through the antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) mechanism. We demonstrate that dengue-specific antibodies enhance the infection of a primary Brazilian ZIKV isolate in a FcγRII-expressing K562 cell line. In addition, we demonstrate that serum samples from dengue-immune pregnant women enhanced ZIKV infection.

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is an important transmembrane glycoprotein kinase involved the initiation or perpetuation of signal transduction cascades within cells. These processes occur after EGFR binds to a ligand [epidermal growth factor (EGF)], thus inducing its dimerization and tyrosine autophosphorylation. Previous publications have highlighted the importance of glycosylation and dimerization for promoting proper function of the receptor and conformation in membranes; however, the effects of these associations on the protein conformational stability have not yet been described.

Brazil is among the top five countries worldwide regarding the number of cases of leishmaniasis, which are present in all of the regions of the country. The northeastern region continues to have higher numbers of cases every year and in the state of Pernambuco, 34% of the municipalities are endemic for this disease. The diversity of vectors, reservoirs and etiological agents, in association with socioeconomic and environmental conditions, gives rise to factors that can modify the behavior of American cutaneous leishmaniasis.

American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) (also known as cutaneous leishmaniasis [CL]) is caused by various species of protozoa of the genus Leishmania The diagnosis is achieved on a clinical, epidemiological, and pathological basis, supported by positive parasitological exams and demonstration of leishmanin delayed-type hypersensitivity. Serological assays are not routinely used in the diagnosis because many are considered to have low sensitivity and the particular Leishmania species causing the disease can lead to variable performance. In the present study, we generated recombinant versions of two highly conserved Leishmania proteins, Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis-derived Lb8E and Lb6H, and evaluated both in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).

Background: Current scientific information reported that due to successive treatments of schistosomiasis cases in endemic areas of Brazil in the last 30 years, there has been a decrease in severe clinical form (hepatosplenic) and mortality from upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to this disease. Against this information, literature data show that the state of Pernambuco presents significant percentage of deaths and hospitalizations due to schistosomiasis, and occurrence of severe clinical forms as schistosomiasis myeloradiculopathy and persistence of localities with high parasite loads. This scenario justified this research which seeking to update the morbidity and mortality of schistosomiasis in Pernambuco.
