Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) symptoms are very common in the general adult population. Dysphagia, heartburn, regurgitation and non-cardiac chest pain are the most common signs. The clinical approach in managing these symptoms starts with upper GI endoscopy in order to exclude inflammatory, neoplastic and fibrotic disorders that involve the esophagus.

Cancer is a consequence of stochastic (mutations, genetic, and epigenetic instabilities) and deterministic (evolutionary bottlenecks) events. Stochastic events are less amenable to prediction, whereas deterministic events yield more predictable results. The relative contribution of these opposing forces determines cancer predictability, which affects the accuracy of our prognostic predictions and is critical for treatment planning.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the best dose of selinexor when combined with pomalidomide and dexamethasone for patients with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM).
  • In trials, two doses (40 mg and 60 mg) were assessed, showing overall response rates of 50% and 65%, respectively, with better long-term responses seen in the lower dose group (SPd-40).
  • The SPd-40 regimen demonstrated a more favorable risk-benefit profile compared to SPd-60, indicating it may be the optimal dose due to its efficacy and tolerability.

Background: Pediatric pemphigus is a rare bullous disease that represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge;  evidence on patients' response to various treatments and long-term surveillance data are lacking. We aimed to investigate pediatric pemphigus patients' characteristics, diagnosis, therapeutics, response, and long-term follow-up.

Methods: This is a retrospective study of all pemphigus patients aged <18 years, diagnosed between 2000 and 2023, from three tertiary medical centers in Israel.

We propose a new approach to estimate the vaccination rates required to achieve herd immunity against SARS-COV2 virus at a city level. Based on information obtained from the Israeli Ministry of Health, we estimate two separate quadratic models, one for each dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA Pfizer vaccine. The dependent variable is the scope of morbidity, expressed as the number of cases per 10,000 persons.

Phenotypic and genotypic analysis of antimicrobial resistance and population structure of gastroenteritis-related Aeromonas isolates.

Ann Clin Microbiol Antimicrob

May 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine, School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Background: The population structure and the correlation between antimicrobial resistance (AMR) phenotypes and genotypes in Aeromonas species isolated from patients with gastroenteritis are not well understood. The aims of the study were to: (1) investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Aeromonas species isolated from patients with gastroenteritis; (2) explore the relationship between AMR genes and resistance phenotypes; and (3) describe the population structure of these isolates and provide evidence of transmission events among them.

Methods: This microbiological survey was performed at the Microbiology Laboratory of the Emek Medical Center in Afula, Israel.
