The Swords of Iron (SOI) War is an armed conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has been taking place in Gaza from October 2023 until the present time of writing this article. This war is characterized by urban close contact combat. The combat equipment, weaponry, and protective measures employed, differ markedly from those in previously documented major conflicts, significantly impacting the types of injuries sustained by soldiers.

Background: Despite major efforts in prevention, surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a burden on patients and the healthcare system and are associated with significant morbidity. SSIs are one of the costliest healthcare-associated infections. The diagnosis of SSIs is based mainly on clinical assessment, which may result in a delay in detection.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetic blinding disease with over 80 causative genes. Disease progression varies between patients with similar genetic backgrounds. We assessed the association between environment, gut microbiota, and retinal degeneration in the RP rat model Royal College of Surgeons (RCS).

Background And Aims: We previously identified small molecules predicted to reverse an ileal gene signature for future Crohn's Disease (CD) strictures. Here we used a new human intestinal organoid (HIO) model system containing macrophages to test a lead candidate, eicosatetraynoic acid (ETYA).
Methods: Induced pluripotent stem cell lines (iPSC) were derived from CD patients and differentiated into macrophages and HIOs.

Gel lubrication is routinely used during gynecological examination to prevent or reduce pain, yet its impact on microbial composition during sampling remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether lubricating gel affects the microbial composition of vaginal samples. We included 31 pregnant women presenting during their third trimester to clinics or emergency room and collected 143 unique vaginal samples for 16S amplicon microbial analysis.

Objective: Excessive consumption of added sugars has been linked to the rise in obesity and associated metabolic abnormalities. Non-nutritive sweeteners (NNSs) offer a potential solution to reduce sugar intake, yet their metabolic safety remains debated. This study aimed to systematically assess the long-term metabolic effects of commonly used NNSs under both normal and obesogenic conditions.

Disruption of intestinal epithelial functions is linked to Crohn disease (CD) pathogenesis. We identified a widespread reduction in the expression of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) including LHFPL3-AS2 in the treatment-naïve CD ileum of the RISK pediatric cohort. We validated the reduction of LHFPL3-AS2 in adult CD and noted a further reduction in patients with more severe CD from the RISK cohort.

Background: A wide range of surgical techniques has been described for breast conservation treatment (Oncoplasty) based on breast size and shape, as well as tumor size and location. However, there is a lack of standardization regarding the indications for oncoplastic reconstruction. This study aims to identify the presurgical parameters associated with poor cosmetic outcomes post-breast conserving treatment.

An integral part of managing patients with thymoma and thymic carcinoma is imaging. At diagnosis and staging, imaging helps demonstrate the extent of local invasion and distant metastases which allows the proper stratification of patients for therapy. For decades, the predominant staging system for thymic tumors was the Masaoka-Koga staging system.

Ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease (CD), and celiac disease are prevalent intestinal inflammatory disorders with nonsatisfactory therapeutic interventions. Analyzing patient data-driven cohorts can highlight disease pathways and new targets for interventions. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are attractive candidates, since they are readily targetable by RNA therapeutics, show relative cell-specific expression, and play key cellular functions.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common, life threatening cardiovascular emergency. Risk stratification is one of the core principles of acute PE management and determines the choice of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. In routine clinical practice, clinicians rely on the patient's electronic health record (EHR) to provide a context for their medical imaging interpretation.

Background And Aims: Widespread dysregulation of long non-coding RNAs [lncRNAs] including a reduction in GATA6-AS1 was noted in inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. We previously reported a prominent inhibition of epithelial mitochondrial functions in ulcerative colitis [UC]. However, the connection between reduction of GATA6-AS1 expression and attenuated epithelial mitochondrial functions was not defined.

Background: Thymomas are characterized by a low tumor mutation burden and a paucity of actionable mutations. Clinical behavior can vary from relatively indolent to very aggressive and impact survival. Platinum-based chemotherapy is the primary treatment modality for inoperable disease and is palliative in intent.

It is impossible to achieve a diagnosis without a comprehensive list of possible diagnostic explanations for a certain symptom or syndrome. Joint complaints are very frequent in general practice, paediatrics, emergency medicine and naturally rheumatology and orthopaedics. The differential diagnosis of joint and surrounding tissue pain and inflammation is impressively challenging.

Objective: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) cause chronic intestinal damage and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. The ECM may play an active role in inflammation by modulating immune cell functions, including cell adhesion, but this hypothesis has not been tested in IBD.
Design: Primary human intestinal myofibroblast (HIMF)-derived ECM from IBD and controls, 3D decellularized colon or ECM molecule-coated scaffolds were tested for their adhesiveness for T cells.

Fungal pneumonia is the most frequent presentation of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in patients with hematologic malignancies (HM) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. The most common causes include Aspergillus, Mucor, Fusarium, and Candida species. The high incidence and high morbidity and mortality rate of fungal pneumonias in HM/HSCT populations arise from severe immune dysfunction that may be caused by both the underlying disease and/or its treatment.

Background And Objective: Evaluation of the right ventricle (RV) is a key component of the clinical assessment of many cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders. In this work, we focus on RV strain classification from patients who were diagnosed with pulmonary embolism (PE) in computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) scans. Cranioplasty is commonly performed to treat craniosynostosis. A rare postsurgical complication is massive brain swelling with elevated intracranial pressure. This commonly presents with mydriasis, coma, and seizures; radiologic findings include cerebral edema, parenchymal hemorrhages, and ischemic changes.

Background & Aims: Colonic eosinophilia, an enigmatic finding often referred to as eosinophilic colitis (EoC), is a poorly understood condition. Whether EoC is a distinct disease or a colonic manifestation of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is undetermined.
Methods: Subjects with EoC (n = 27) and controls (normal [NL, n = 20], Crohn's disease [CD, n = 14]) were enrolled across sites associated with the Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers.
