Background: The impact on pregnancy of laparoscopy for acute appendicitis is well documented. However, with an accurate pre-operative diagnosis being more challenging in pregnant patients, the incidence of a negative appendectomy (NA) is higher in this cohort. The aim of this study was to evaluate the maternal and neonatal implications of a NA during pregnancy.

Hypothesis: Hearing via soft tissue stimulation involves an osseous pathway.
Background: A recent study that measured both hearing thresholds and skull vibrations found that vibratory stimulation of soft tissue led to hearing sensation that correlated with skull vibrations, supporting the hypothesis of an osseous pathway. It is possible, however, that a lower application force of the vibrator on the stimulated soft tissue would not be sufficient to elicit skull vibration suggesting hearing via a nonosseous pathway.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a prolonged reading session on a smartphone screen on optical quality metrics and tear film stability.
Methods: This prospective study was conducted in 41 healthy volunteers who were asked to read an article on a smartphone screen for 20 minutes. The following tests were performed before the reading task in this consecutive order and repeated after the reading task in the same order: automated noninvasive tear break-up time, optical quality assessment including Objective Scatter Index (OSI), modulation transfer function, Strehl ratio, and tear film dynamic analysis as follows: vision break-up time (VBUT) as a function of OSI changes within 20 seconds, using a double-pass aberrometer imaging system, and fluorescein tear break-up time (FBUT) measured using the slit lamp.

Study Objective: Bartholin's gland abscess may occur in up to 2% of the women. Surgical drainage using the Word catheter application or marsupialization is the treatment of choice in the management of Bartholin's gland abscess. We aimed to compare the abscess recurrence rates between these 2 surgical methods.

Background: Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) most commonly results from weakened or injured muscles and ligaments whose purpose is to support the pelvic floor. Many studies have placed vaginal delivery and prolonged second stage of labor (SSL) as major risk factors for PFD, supposedly through generating enhanced pressure in the pelvic area. Although many studies describe the effects of vaginal delivery and labor on structure and function of the pelvic floor, not much is known regarding PFD deriving from pregnancy and its prevalence and severity in the postpartum.

Background: Cesarean delivery is a prevalent procedure worldwide, and an established risk factor for subsequent pregnancies.
Aims: To examine if a prior cesarean delivery due to first vs. second stage non-progressive labor carries different risk profiles for adverse outcomes in the subsequent pregnancy.

Objective: To examine the association between vaginal delivery of a previous macrosomic neonate (birthweight (BW)≥ 4000) among non-diabetic women and the rate of shoulder dystocia (SD) in the subsequent pregnancy.
Study Design: A historical prospective cohort study in a university affiliated medical center from 2005 to 2019. Women who had a singleton pregnancy and two consecutive deliveries in our medical center were included.

Objective: Fetal growth restriction is suspected when the estimated fetal weight is <10th percentile for gestational age. Using a regional sonographic estimated fetal weight growth curve to diagnose fetal growth restriction has no known benefits; however, the traditional approach of using birthweight curves is misleading, since a large proportion of preterm births arise from pathological pregnancies. Our aim was to compare the diagnostic accuracies of sonographic versus birthweight curves in diagnosing fetal growth restriction.

Research Question: Is the interval length between an early pregnancy loss and the following treatment cycle a predictor for achieving clinical pregnancy among IVF patients?
Design: This retrospective cohort study of 257 women who reinitiated treatment after first-trimester IVF pregnancy loss was conducted at a tertiary, university-affiliated medical centre between 1 January 2014 to 1 January 2018. Women aged 18-40 years, with normal uterine cavity, who experienced first-trimester pregnancy loss at less than 14 weeks after IVF, were included. Miscarriages were classified as spontaneous, biochemical, medical or surgical.

Objective: Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) is standard treatment among women with BRCA mutations. The aim of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the risk of endometrial cancer (EC) in BRCA1 or BRCA2 germline mutation carriers and to examine the justifiability of prophylactic hysterectomy at the time of RRSO.

Objective: Prior vaginal delivery (VD), including vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), is one of the greatest predictors of successful trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) and uterine rupture. We aimed to evaluate VBAC and uterine rupture rates associated with TOLAC in women with VD prior to cesarean delivery (CD) or with prior VBAC, and the cumulative effect of the number of prior VD's.
Study Design: This retrospective study included women having TOLAC between 2005-2019.

Up until now, there is much debate about the role of asymptomatic patients and pauci-symptomatic patients in severe acute respiratory syndrome novel coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission, and little is known about the kinetics of viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) shedding in these populations. This article aims to describe key features and the nature of asymptomatic and pauci-symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. The cohort consisted of six participants, three pairs, which were infected with SARS-CoV-2 during February 2020 on board the Diamond Princess.

Structural mitochondrial abnormalities and genetic aberrations in mitochondrial proteins have been known in Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), yet there is currently little data regarding MDS's metabolic properties and energy production cells. In the current study, we used state-of-the-art methods to assess OXPHOS in peripheral blood cells obtained from MDS patients and healthy controls. We then assessed the effect of food supplements-Coenzyme Q10 and carnitine on mitochondrial function and hematological response.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the maternal and neonatal outcomes of parturients attempting trial of labor (TOL) after two previous CD versus those who had an elective third repeat CD. A retrospective computerized database cohort study was conducted at a single tertiary center between 2005 and 2019. Various maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared between parturients attempting TOL after two CD versus parturients opting for elective third repeat CD.

Germline pathogenic sequence variants (PSVs) in BRCA1 substantially increase risk for developing breast (BC) and ovarian cancer (OvC). Yet, incomplete penetrance suggests that modifier factors affect phenotypic expression of mutant BRCA1 alleles. Analysis of identical BRCA1 PSV carriers of diverse ethnicities may provide further evidence for modifier factors.
