Osteophytes' position in subjects with DISH and right-sided aorta: verification of the 'aortic pulsation protective effect' theory.

Rheumatology (Oxford)

November 2022

Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Sheba Medical Center, affiliated with the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv.

Objectives: To validate in a large cohort with right-sided aorta the theory that thoracic right-sided flowing osteophytes in DISH results from a 'protective' effect of the pulsating descending left-sided thoracic aorta.

Methods: Chest CTs of patients with DISH and right-sided aorta and controls with DISH and left-sided aorta were evaluated and compared on each intervertebral space (IS) for the location of the aorta (right, left, centre) and the location of the osteophyte relative to the aorta (contralateral, ipsilateral, bilateral).

Results: The study and control cohorts included 31 and 35 subjects, respectively (male 22/9 and female 27/8; median age 64.

Objective: Striae gravidarum (SG) and perineal lacerations are common occurrences during late pregnancy and labor. It has been hypothesized that both conditions may share a common pathophysiological pathway through changes in the connective tissue. We aimed to investigate a possible association between these two conditions and whether the presence of SG may predict perineal lacerations.

Importance: Antenatal diagnosis of fetal weight is challenging, and the detection rate of fetal growth restriction (FGR) is low. Neonates with FGR are known to have an increased rate of obstetric intervention during labor, but the association of antenatal fetal weight estimation with mode of delivery and neonatal outcomes among neonates who are small and appropriate for gestational age (SGA and AGA) has not been reported.

Objective: To evaluate the association of antenatal fetal weight estimation with mode of delivery and neonatal outcomes among neonates who are SGA and AGA, applying psychological concepts of cognitive bias and prospect theory to a model of clinical behavior.

Department of Genetics, The Silberman Institute of Life Sciences, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Givat Ram, Jerusalem 91904, Israel.

Current social trends of delayed reproduction to the fourth and fifth decade of life call for a better understanding of reproductive aging. Demographic studies correlated late reproduction with general health and longevity. Telomeres, the protective ends of eukaryotic chromosomes, were implicated in various aging-associated pathologies and longevity.

Invasive fungal infections in critically ill COVID-19 patients in a large tertiary university hospital in Israel.

J Crit Care

June 2022

Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Hadassah Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel. Electronic address:

Unlabelled: An increasing number of studies have tried to determine the incidence of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in COVID-19 patients. Challenges in the diagnosis of pulmonary aspergillosis in these patients have led to new definitions of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA). The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and outcomes of and risk factors for IFIs in critically-ill COVID-19 patients, using the new definitions, in a tertiary center in Israel.

Objectives: In August 2021, 6 months after mass vaccination of the Israeli population with the two-dose BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine, a surge of coronavirus disease 2019 infections, mostly from the delta variant, appeared also among the vaccinated. In response, the Israeli Ministry of Health initiated a booster (third dose) vaccination program. We assessed the protective effect of the third dose among health care workers (HCWs).

Assessing knowledge regarding pelvic floor disorders in childbearing age women and appropriate interventions will enable women to seek appropriate medical advice once pelvic floor disorders have developed. The purpose of this study was to validate the prolapse and incontinence knowledge questionnaire in the Hebrew language.

Superimposed versus de novo pre-eclampsia: Is there a difference?

Int J Gynaecol Obstet

November 2022

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Soroka University Medical Center, Affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel.

Objective: To investigate whether pre-eclampsia is a single clinical entity or whether de novo pre-eclampsia and superimposed pre-eclampsia are distinct entities, with respect to baseline maternal characteristics, obstetrical complications, and perinatal outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study comparing singleton pregnancies complicated with de novo pre-eclampsia (n = 10 979, 93%) and superimposed pre-eclampsia (n = 804, 7%). Maternal baseline characteristics, pregnancy and labor complications, and neonatal outcomes were evaluated in the univariate analysis.

Background: Neonatal jaundice occurs in approximately 60% of term newborns. Although risk factors for neonatal jaundice have been studied, all the suggested strategies are based on various newborn tests for bilirubin levels. We aim to stratify neonates into risk groups for clinically significant neonatal jaundice using a combined data analysis approach, without serum bilirubin evaluation.

The impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on the prevalence and severity of hospitalizations for pneumonia in children.

Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis

March 2022

Pediatric Pulmonology Institute, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, affiliated with The Hebrew University, School of Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel.

Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) were introduced into the Israeli national immunization plan starting with the heptavalent PCV7 in 2009 and then PCV13 in the late 2010. The objective of this study was to determine the vaccines' impact on hospitalization rates for community-acquired pneumonia on the severity of the pneumonia episodes and upon pneumococcal serotype distribution. We retrospectively reviewed all children hospitalized in our institution with pneumonia, aged between 1 and 16 years, between the years 2006 and 2015.

Purpose: This study compared pain and anxiety levels in individuals receiving intravitreal injections (IVIs) using a speculum-free injection technique, the lid splinting eyelid retraction technique, or using a speculum.

Methods: This was a prospective study of individuals receiving IVI at a single tertiary care medical center who responded to a questionnaire and visual analog scale (VAS) between December 2019 and January 2020. In one group, a speculum was used prior to injection, whereas in the other group, a speculum-free injection technique was used.

Key Message: Spontaneous labor onset, epidural anesthesia and prior cesarean for non-arrest disorders are strong predictors of successful vaginal birth after cesarean in women delivering a macrosomic fetus.

Purpose: Lower rates of successful vaginal birth after cesarean in association with increasing birthweight were previously reported. We aimed to determine the factors associated with successful trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) among primiparous women with fetal macrosomia.

Background And Aims: Glucagon Like Peptide-1 Receptor (GLP-1R) activation reduces pro-inflammatory responses of human monocytes, their accumulation in the vascular wall and foam cell formation inhibiting atherosclerogenesis. This suggests that reduction of circulating GLP-1-1R positive monocytes may have pro-atherogenic effects. It is unknown whether different CD14/CD16 monocytes subsets display GLP-1R and whether their relative proportions correlate with atherosclerosis severity.
