Background: Joint arthroplasty effectively treats osteoarthritis, providing pain relief and improving function, but postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a common complication. This study therefore assessed the effectiveness and safety of aspirin compared with oral anticoagulants (OACs) for VTE prophylaxis after joint arthroplasty.

Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed by searching PubMed, Embase, the Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) up to May 14, 2024, that compared the effect of aspirin versus OACs on VTE prophylaxis in adults undergoing joint arthroplasty.

The MASS cohort comprises 2000 ICU patients with severe pneumonia, covering community-acquired pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and ventilator-associated pneumonia, sourced from 19 hospitals across 10 cities in three provinces. A wide array of samples including bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, sputum, feces, and whole blood are longitudinally collected throughout patients' ICU stays. The cohort study seeks to uncover the dynamics of lung and gut microbiomes and their associations with severe pneumonia and host susceptibility, integrating deep metagenomics and transcriptomics with detailed clinical data.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute ischemic stroke is a serious health issue, and using tirofiban alongside thrombectomy can help reduce the chance of blood vessel reocclusion after treatment.
  • A study of 409 stroke patients showed that tirofiban significantly improved functional outcomes and reduced mortality and complications, particularly in those with good renal function (eGFR ≥ 90 mL/min/1.73 m²).
  • The effectiveness of tirofiban seems to be lessened in patients with poor renal function (eGFR < 90 mL/min/1.73 m²), suggesting that kidney health plays a role in treatment success.

Piezo1-dependent regulation of pericyte proliferation by blood flow during brain vascular development.

Cell Rep

January 2024

Institute of Neuroscience, State Key Laboratory of Neuroscience, CAS Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 320 Yue-Yang Road, Shanghai 200031, China. Electronic address:

Blood flow is known to regulate cerebrovascular development through acting on vascular endothelial cells (ECs). As an indispensable component of the neurovascular unit, brain pericytes physically couple with ECs and play vital roles in blood-brain barrier integrity maintenance and neurovascular coupling. However, it remains unclear whether blood flow affects brain pericyte development.

Overlapping lockup lymphaticovenous anastomosis: A useful addition to supermicrosurgery.

J Vasc Surg Venous Lymphat Disord

January 2024

Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province affiliated with Wenzhou Medical University, Taizhou, China; Enze Hospital, Taizhou Enze Medical Center (Group), Taizhou, China. Electronic address:

Background: Lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat lymphedema. This surgical procedure connects the superficial lymphatic vessels to nearby veins to establish lymphatic-venous pathways. One of the most common challenges encountered by lymphatic surgeons when performing LVA is a mismatch in the sizes of the veins and lymphatic vessels, with the effectiveness limited by technical constraints.

October 2023

Department of Emergency Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical, the key specialty of traditional Chinese Medicine of Zhejiang Provincial in the 13th Five-Year Plan period (Emergency Department), Wenzhou Key Laboratory of emergency and disaster medicine, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China. Electronic address:

Paraquat (PQ) is an environmentally friendly and efficient herbicide, but PQ misuse or intentional self-use can cause death through multiple organ damage and can cause acute lung injury. Existing clinical treatments alleviate symptoms but do not significantly improve the mortality rate. Ferroptosis is a type of necrosis that presents in a manner very similar to the cell damage induced by high doses of PQ, but the role of ferroptosis in paraquat-induced lung injury remains unclear.

Background: Flaps based on the medial plantar artery (MPA) accomplish favorable surgical outcomes in palmar resurfacing because of their outstanding texture, pliability, and contour, but primary closure cannot be achieved at the donor site when the flap is designed to be relatively large. In this study, the kiss technique was used for the reconstruction of extensive palmar defects, which minimized donor-site morbidity.

Methods: A modified flap surgical strategy was systemically developed based on the perforator distribution of the MPA through a cadaver study.

One of the most potent anti-human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) immune mechanisms possessed by host cells is type I interferon (IFN1), which induces the expression of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs). During this process, mitochondria play an important role in the IFN1 response, and mitofusin 1 (MFN1) is a key regulator of mitochondrial fusion located on the outer mitochondrial membrane. However, the underlying mechanism of MFN1's promotion of IFN1 during HCMV infection still remains unknown.
