Article Synopsis
  • - Liver fibrosis linked to hepatitis B can lead to serious liver cancer, and menstrual blood-derived stem cells (MenSCs) have shown promise in alleviating this condition by promoting healing in liver tissues.
  • - A study using a mouse model of liver fibrosis showed that MenSCs migrated to injured areas, improving liver function and reducing fibrosis through changes in cell interactions and matrix proteins.
  • - Advanced techniques like single-cell RNA sequencing and CellChat analysis revealed the complex interactions between different cell types in the liver, suggesting specific molecules that can be targeted for future therapies using MenSCs.

Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Department of Surgery, First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310003, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Aging contributes to liver disease, and researchers are studying how this happens in order to find ways to treat it better.
  • They used a special model with older rats and lab cell tests to discover changes in certain genes that control liver functions as the liver ages.
  • They found that a protein called FGF21 gets lower as the liver ages, and boosting FGF21 can help protect the liver and could be a key way to treat liver problems related to aging.

CD38 antigen is a glycoprotein that found on the surface of several immune cells, and this property makes its monoclonal antibodies have the effect of targeted elimination of immune cells. Therefore, the CD38 monoclonal antibody (such as daratumumab, Isatuximab) becomes a new treatment option for membranous nephropathy, lupus nephritis, renal transplantation, and other refractory kidney diseases. This review summarizes the application of CD38 monoclonal antibodies in different kidney diseases and highlights future prospects.

Background: Elevated preoperative γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels or reduced serum albumin levels have been established as negative prognostic factors for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and various other tumors. Nonetheless, the prognostic significance of the GGT to serum albumin ratio (GAR) in liver transplantation (LT) therapy for HCC is still not well-defined.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 141 HCC patients who underwent LT at Shulan (Hangzhou) Hospital from June 2017 to November 2020.

February 2024

Jiangsu Engineering Research Center of Cardiovascular Drugs Targeting Endothelial Cells, College of Health Sciences, School of Life Sciences, Jiangsu Normal University, Xuzhou 221000, Jiangsu Province, China.

The population of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients along with relevant advanced liver disease is projected to continue growing, because currently no medications are approved for treatment. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is believed a novel and promising therapeutic approach based on the concept of the gut-liver axis in liver disease. There has been an increase in the number of pre-clinical and clinical studies evaluating FMT in NAFLD treatment, however, existing findings diverge on its effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without microvascular invasion (M0) and highlights the variability in their prognosis, sparking debate about the need for additional therapy after initial treatments like liver resection (LR) or liver transplantation (LT).
  • Researchers developed the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital (EHBH)-M0 score using various clinical factors (including α-fetoprotein levels and tumor size) to classify these patients, revealing differing survival outcomes based on the score.
  • The EHBH M0 scoring system proved to be more reliable than other existing staging systems in predicting patient prognosis, indicating that patients with higher scores could benefit from adjuvant therapies like transcatheter arterial

Diminished or lost Major Histocompatibility Complex class I (MHC-I) expression is frequently observed in tumors, which obstructs the immune recognition of tumor cells by cytotoxic T cells. Restoring MHC-I expression by promoting its transcription and improving protein stability have been promising strategies for reestablishing anti-tumor immune responses. Here, through cell-based screening models, we found that cediranib significantly upregulated MHC-I expression in tumor cells.
