Objective: Improper use of human albumin (HA) is now common in clinical settings. This study aims to explore the feasibility of the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle in promoting the rational use of HA.

Methods: The differences between the control and observation groups (after the PDCA cycle) in terms of serum albumin detection rate, serum albumin values, HA usage, and rationality were analysed and compared using a before-and-after control method.

The interdental papilla is closely associated with oral health and dental aesthetics. Interproximal papilla is an essential component of pink aesthetics as well as an indispensable prerequisite for the health of oral tissues. The loss of papillary height not only considerably affects final esthetic results, but also brings a series of periodontal complications.

Background: Ground-glass opacity (GGO) on computed tomography (CT) has been suggested as a potential prognostic factor in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), but its significance in patients with pathological stage IA3 LUAD, particularly in relation to micropapillary (MIP) status, remains unclear. This study addresses the clinical need to stratify patients based on GGO and MIP status to optimize prognosis prediction and follow-up strategies.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted on 411 patients with pathological stage IA3 LUAD, enrolled between July 2012 and July 2020.

Background: It is largely unidentified concerning the underlying genetic causes responsible for triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC), with unpredictable disease recurrence. This study aimed to examine the role of ZNF703 (Zinc finger 703) in the malignant behaviors of TNBC and its role in predicting disease-free survival (DFS).

Methods: After downregulation of ZNF703 with short interfering RNA (siRNA), we examined the proliferation of TNBC cell line MDA-MB-231 by sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay, the invasion of cells by a transwell invasion model, and the migration of cells by the monolayer wound-healing experiment.

Research progress on quercetin in improving the survival rate of random skin flap.

Arch Dermatol Res

January 2025

Department of Plastic Surgery, the Second Hospital & Clinical Medical School, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, Gansu, 730030, China.

Random skin flap transplantation is critical in wound repair, organ reconstruction and cosmetic surgery, yet skin flap necrosis remains a common and challenging issue. Quercetin, a flavonoid abundant in various plants, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and other beneficial pharmacological effects. Recent studies suggest quercetin can improve random skin flap survival by modulating inflammation, reducing oxidative stress, and promoting angiogenesis.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a dangerous neurological disease associated with an imbalance in Th17/Treg cells and abnormal activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. This study aims to investigate whether inhibition of miR-155 can activate the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway to improve Th17/Treg imbalance and provide neuroprotective effects against stroke. We employed a multi-level experimental design.

Metastasis is the trigger of death in anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) patients, yet the specific mechanisms at play are still largely enigmatic. While the involvement of LARP1 in the metastatic process of various cancers has been documented, there is a noticeable gap in the literature regarding its potential influence on ATC metastasis. Molecular studies probed LARP1 expression within ATC cells, with subsequent in vitro experiments examining the effects of LARP1 on ATC cell metastasis and the mTOR signaling cascade.

Objective: Nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) activation is a pivotal event in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). OA patients frequently exhibit vitamin D (VD) deficiency, which is commonly associated with NF-κB activation. Our study aimed to investigate whether VD could protect against OA by modulating NF-κB pathway and to explore the underlying mechanisms.

Background: Single-lung ventilation (SLV) is a widely used procedure in thoracic surgery; however, it can lead to hypoxemia, which is attributed to intrapulmonary shunt and hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction. Stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) has shown protective effects during SLV in various pulmonary conditions. The objective of the study was to assess the clinical utility of ultrasound-guided SGB in patients undergoing thoracoscopic pulmonary lobectomy through a prospective clinical trial.

Article Synopsis
  • Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a common kidney condition in children that can lead to severe complications like acute kidney injury (AKI), prompting the need for early identification of high-risk patients.
  • A comprehensive analysis of 11 studies showed that AKI occurs in about 29% of children with NS, with several significant risk factors like age of onset, gender, serum albumin levels, steroid response, and existing conditions such as infections and hypertension.
  • The study utilized traditional and network meta-analyses to evaluate these risk factors, emphasizing the importance of recognizing these associations to improve management and outcomes for children with NS.

Haplotype-Resolved Genotyping and Association Analysis of 1,020 β-Thalassemia Patients by Targeted Long-Read Sequencing.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

December 2024

Innovation Center for Diagnostics and Treatment of Thalassemia, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510515, China.

Despite the well-documented mutation spectra of β-thalassemia, the genetic variants and haplotypes of globin gene clusters modulating its clinical heterogeneity remain incompletely illustrated. Here, a targeted long-read sequencing (T-LRS) is demonstrated to capture 20 genes/loci in 1,020 β-thalassemia patients. This panel permits not only identification of thalassemia mutations at 100% of sensitivity and specificity, but also detection of rare structural variants (SVs) and single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in modifier genes/loci.
