Objective: This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of a clinical nomogram model based on serum YKL-40 for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) during hospitalization in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Methods: In this study, 295 STEMI patients from October 2020 to March 2023 in the Second People's Hospital of Hefei were randomly divided into a training group ( = 206) and a validation group ( = 89). Machine learning random forest model was used to select important variables and multivariate logistic regression was included to analyze the influencing factors of in-hospital MACE in STEMI patients; a nomogram model was constructed and the discrimination, calibration, and clinical effectiveness of the model were verified.

Lanosterol synthase loss of function decreases the malignant phenotypes of HepG2 cells by deactivating the Src/MAPK signaling pathway.

July 2023

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui 230032, P.R. China.

Cholesterol is critical for tumor cells to maintain their membrane components, cell morphology and activity functions. The inhibition of the cholesterol pathway may be an efficient strategy with which to limit tumor growth and the metastatic process. In the present study, lanosterol synthase (LSS) was knocked down by transfecting LSS short hairpin RNA into HepG2 cells, and cell growth, apoptosis and migratory potential were then detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 cell proliferation assay, flow cytometric analysis and wound healing assay, respectively.

Chronic β-adrenergic stress contributes to cardiomyopathy in rodents with collagen-induced arthritis.

Acta Pharmacol Sin

October 2023

The Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Anhui Medical University, Key Laboratory of Anti-inflammatory and Immune Medicine, Ministry of Education; Collaborative Innovation Center of Anti-inflammatory and Immune Medicine, Hefei, 230032, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) experience higher rates of cardiac dysfunction, leading to increased mortality despite treatment.
  • In an animal study using collagen-induced arthritis models, researchers found persistent cardiac dysfunction and a link between elevated epinephrine levels and heart failure biomarkers in RA.
  • Treatment with β-adrenergic blockers improved heart function, suggesting targeting β-adrenergic stress may help protect RA patients from heart failure.

The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the relationship among serum testosterone, systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and carotid atherosclerosis in middle-aged and elderly men of Han nationality in the real world. With reference to the inclusion criteria, 89 middle-aged and elderly Han male patients were finally selected. Local weighted regression (LOESS) and multivariate logistic regression models were used to explore the independent correlation between serum testosterone, new inflammatory markers, and atherosclerosis.

Influences of Glycyrrhetinic acid on expression of inflammatory factors in interleukin (IL)-1β-induced SW982 cells and its anti-inflammatory effects were discussed in this study. MTT results showed that Glycyrrhetinic acid (≤80 μmol·L-1) almost has no toxicity on SW982 cells. The results of ELISA and real-time PCR showed that Glycyrrhetinic acid (10, 20 and 40 μmol · L-1) can significantly inhibit the expression of inflammatory factors such as IL-6, IL-8 and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1).

Article Synopsis
  • Early-life stress and maternal sleep deprivation in rodents negatively impact the development of the central nervous system, leading to risks of neuropsychiatric disorders in their offspring, even into old age.
  • A study examined the effects of maternal sleep deprivation on depression and cognitive function in older CD-1 mice, finding that these mice displayed heightened depression-like behaviors and impaired cognition due to increased proinflammatory markers in the brain.
  • However, long-term exposure to an enriched environment was shown to reverse these negative effects, improving neuroinflammation and synaptic plasticity, suggesting that environmental enrichment can mitigate the adverse impacts of maternal sleep deprivation.
