OCTA evaluates changes in retinal microvasculature in renal hypertension patients.

The objective of this study is to utilize optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) techniques for the purpose of identifying abnormalities in retinal and conjunctival vascular density among patients afflicted with renal hypertension. From October 2022 to October 2023, a cohort of sixteen patients diagnosed with renal hypertension (RH), comprising a total of 32 eyes, was selected from the Department of Nephrology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. Concurrently, a group of sixteen healthy individuals, carefully matched in characteristics, was recruited from volunteers at the Ophthalmology Research Center and designated as the healthy controls (HCs) group.

Association between long-term exposure to air pollution and diabetic retinopathy: Evidence from the Fujian Eye Study.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), one of the most common microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), is a major contributor of vision impairment and blindness worldwide. Studies have shown that air pollution exposure is adversely associated with DM. However, evidence is scarce regarding how air pollution exposure affects DR.

Relation Between Corneal Dendritic Cell Density and Tear Film Stability in Patients with Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis Associated Dry Eye.

Purpose: To clarify the ocular surface features of patients with recent history of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) and the relation between corneal dendritic cells (DCs) and ocular discomfort.

Methods: Normal controls (NC) and dry eye (DE) patients without EKC were recruited. Patients with recent EKC history (onset >4 weeks, but <20 weeks) were recruited as EKC + DE group (with dry eye) or EKC-DE group (without dry eye).

Stereopsis after bilateral implantation of Toric intraocular lenses in high myopic cataract patients with astigmatism.

Purpose: To evaluate near, intermediate, distance visual acuity and stereopsis after bilateral implantation of Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) in high myopic patients with astigmatism.

Methods: Bilateral Toric or non-Toric IOL implantation (n ​= ​40 eyes each) was performed on high myopic cataract eyes with astigmatism. Best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA), residual refractive astigmatism (RRA), and near, intermediate, and distance stereoacuity were measured postoperatively at 7 days, 1 month, and 3 months.

Relations between nonmotor manifestations and motor disorders in patients with benign essential blepharospasm.

Purpose: To evaluate the relations between nonmotor manifestations (dry eye, mood disorders, and sleep disturbance) and motor disorders in patients with benign essential blepharospasm (BEB), and to determine whether relieving motor disorders by botulinum neurotoxin can improve the nonmotor manifestations.

Methods: In this prospective case series study, 123 BEB patients were enrolled for evaluations. Among them, 28 patients underwent botulinum neurotoxin therapy and attended another two postoperative visits at 1 month and 3 months.

Optimization of method for achieving a single-cell suspension from mouse corneas.

The single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) technique is used to explore the biological characteristics of tissues under pathological and physiological conditions that include certain chronic eye diseases. Harvesting of single-cell suspensions is one challenge inherent to scRNA-seq procedures. This study aimed to use an optimized method to digest a whole mouse cornea to harvest single-cell suspensions.

Corylin accelerated wound healing through SIRT1 and PI3K/AKT signaling: a candidate remedy for chronic non-healing wounds.

Chronic non-healing wound is a considerable clinical challenge and research into the discovery of novel pro-healing agents is underway as existing therapeutic approaches cannot sufficiently meet current needs. We studied the effects of corylin in cell line fibroblasts and macrophages by Western blots, PCR, Flow cytometry assay, Immunofluorescence. We showed that corylin, a main flavonoid extracted from L, reduced inflammatory responses, promoted collagen deposition, and accelerated the healing of full-thickness skin wounds in mice.

Improving myopia awareness school-based myopia prevention health education among Chinese students.

Aim: To investigate the myopia awareness level, knowledge, attitude, and skills at baseline and to implement and evaluate the efficacy of myopia prevention health education among Chinese students.

Methods: A total of 1000 middle school students from 2 middle schools were invited to participate in the study, and myopia prevention health education was conducted. The students were assessed at baseline, followed by a survey.

Neuroprotective effect of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles on optic nerve injury in chronic ocular hypertension.

Mesenchymal stem cells have neuroprotective effects that limit damage to the retina and photoreceptors, and which may be mediated by extracellular vesicles (or exosomes) released by mesenchymal stem cells. To investigate the neuroprotective effect of extracellular vesicles derived from umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells on glaucoma, we established rat models of chronic ocular hypertension by injecting conjunctival fibroblasts into the anterior chamber to mimic optic nerve injury caused by glaucoma. One week after injury, extracellular vesicles derived from umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells were injected into the vitreous cavity.

Accurate detection and grading of pterygium through smartphone by a fusion training model.

Background/aims: To improve the accuracy of pterygium screening and detection through smartphones, we established a fusion training model by blending a large number of slit-lamp image data with a small proportion of smartphone data.

Fenofibrate suppresses corneal neovascularization by regulating lipid metabolism through PPARα signaling pathway.

The purpose of this study was to explore the potential underlying mechanism of anti-vascular effects of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) agonist fenofibrate against corneal neovascularization (CNV) through the changes of lipid metabolism during CNV. A suture-induced CNV model was established and the clinical indications were evaluated from day 1 to day 7. Treatments of vehicle and fenofibrate were performed for 5 days after suture and the CNV areas were compared among the groups.

Protective effect of leukemia inhibitory factor on the retinal injury induced by acute ocular hypertension in rats.

This study comprised patients who underwent phacoemulsification and bilateral implantation of extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL (ZXR00; EDOF group), blended implantation of EDOF and bifocal IOL (ZXR00/ZLB00; blended group), and bilateral implantation of trifocal IOL (AT LISA tri 839MP; trifocal group).

Histopathology-based diagnosis of Mooren's ulcer concealed beneath the pterygium on eye.

Mooren's ulcer (MU) is a chronic and painful ulcerative keratitis that is difficult to diagnose, especially when concealed beneath the pterygium, which is a common, benign, wedge-shaped, fleshy tissue growth of the conjunctiva extending onto the cornea. The coexistence of MU and pterygium is extremely rare. A 41-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of unprovoked redness, pain, and blurred vision in the right eye.

Stereopsis and visual acuity: Bilateral trifocal versus blended extended depth of focus and diffractive bifocal intraocular lenses.

Purpose: To compare stereopsis and visual acuity (VA) between bilateral implantation of trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) and blended implantation of an extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL with a bifocal IOL.

Methods: This is a non-randomized, prospective comparative study included 74 eyes of 37 patients who underwent phacoemulsification and bilateral implantation of AT LISA tri 839MP IOL (bilateral group; 21 patients) or blended implantation of Tecnis Symfony ZXR00 and Tecnis ZLB00 IOL (blended group; 16 patients). The primary outcomes were stereoacuity and binocular VA.

23G Minimally Invasive Vitrectomy Combined with Glaucoma Drainage Valve Implantation and Phacoemulsification Cataract Extraction for Neovascular Glaucoma Secondary to Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy with Vitreous Hemorrhage.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of the combined application of 23G minimally invasive vitrectomy, glaucoma drainage valve implantation, and phacoemulsification cataract extraction in the treatment of neovascular glaucoma (NVG) secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) combined with vitreous hemorrhage (VH).

Methods: Eighty-three patients (91 eyes) with PDR diagnosed as NVG phase III complicated with VH from June 2018 to May 2020 were selected as the study subjects. The subjects were randomly divided into 3 groups: group A was treated with 23G minimally invasive vitrectomy combined with glaucoma drainage valve implantation; group B was given 23G minimally invasive vitrectomy combined with phacoemulsification cataract extraction; and group C was treated with 23G minimally invasive vitrectomy combined with glaucoma drainage valve implantation and phacoemulsification cataract extraction.

Visual acuity of urban and rural adults in a coastal province of southern China: the Fujian Eye Study.

Aim: To evaluate the vision status and sociodemographic associations of visual acuity (VA) in an urban and rural population in a coastal province of southern China.

Methods: The Fujian Eye Study, a population-based cross-sectional study, was performed from May 2018 to October 2019. Totally 10 044 participants over 50 years old from all nine cities in Fujian Province were enrolled, and underwent a questionnaire and a series of standard physical and ocular examinations.

Uncorrected near vision acuity and associated factors in a coastal province in southern China: the Fujian eye cross sectional study.

Background: Near vision (NV) is essential to visual quality of individuals, and could be affected by different factors and changed gradually with the development of society. An update estimates is needed. Our study aims to investigate the age-trends in and sociodemographic characteristics associated with uncorrected near vision acuity (UNVA) in people ≥50 years in southern China.

Ovalbumin-Induced Allergic Inflammation Diminishes Cross-Linked Collagen Structures in an Experimental Rabbit Model of Corneal Cross-Linking.

Background: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is one of the reported potential risk factors of progression in keratoconus patients after corneal cross-linking surgery; however, the causal relationship is still inconclusive. Corneal Perforation Caused by Eyelid Margin Trichilemmal Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Background: Trichilemmal carcinoma (TLC) is a rare malignant adnexal tumor most commonly found in the elderly, usually affecting the scalp, eyelids, neck and face. Here, we first reported a rare case of corneal perforation caused by eyelid margin TLC.

Case Presentation: A 68-year-old female presented with 2 months history of unprovoked redness, pain and blurred vision in the left eye.

Meibomian Glands and Tear Film Findings in Type 2 Diabetic Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: The characteristics of the meibomian gland and tear film in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) with different glycemic control levels and diabetic durations remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to identify the association of dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in T2D.

Materials And Methods: Ninety-nine patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM group), 33 dry eye patients without diabetes mellitus (DE group), and 40 normal subjects (NC group) were recruited for this study.

The Fujian eye cross sectional study: objectives, design, and general characteristics.

Methods: The Fujian Eye Study (FJES) is a population-based cross-sectional survey on the public eye health status of residents over 50 years old in the entire Fujian Province of Southern China, which contains both urban and rural areas and coastal and inland regions. 10,044 participants were enrolled using a two-stage cluster sampling design and underwent a questionnaire and a series of standard examinations both physical and ocular.
