Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the relationship between lipid accumulation products (LAP) and depression in U.S. adults using data from 13,051 participants in the NHANES 2005-2018 cycle.
  • The results showed that a higher LAP index was linked to an increased risk of depression, specifically highlighting that participants in the higher LAP quartiles faced a greater risk, with men and individuals with hypertension being more affected.
  • The conclusion emphasizes that individuals with a higher LAP index may be more susceptible to depression, suggesting the need for further research to confirm these findings.

Electronic address:

Purpose: Elevated bilirubin levels have been associated with major depressive disorder (MDD); however, the exact impact of bilirubin on MDD and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we explored the influence of bilirubin on MDD and sought to identify the mechanisms via which bilirubin induces depressive-like behavior.

Patients And Methods: Forty patients who were diagnosed with MDD and received treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were included, with 43 healthy volunteers serving as controls.

Electronic address:

Background: Dyslipidemia in schizophrenia causes a serious loss of healthy life expectancy, making it imperative to explore key environmental risk factors. We aimed to assess the effect of PM and its constituents on dyslipidemia in schizophrenia, identify the critical hazardous components, and investigate the role of impaired thyroid hormones (THs) sensitivity in this association.

Methods: We collected disease data on schizophrenia from the Anhui Mental Health Center from 2019 to 2022.

Objective: Accumulating evidence supports the idea that inflammation may contribute to the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Duloxetine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, exhibits anti-inflammatory effects both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we investigated the impact of duloxetine on changes in serum proinflammatory cytokine levels among individuals diagnosed with MDD.

Introduction: Healthcare workers are integral to public smoking cessation; however, their own smoking behavior can create a significant obstacle to intervening in patients' cessation efforts. Conversely, their success in quitting can enhance their ability to support patients. Research on smoking behavior, particularly smoking cessation among Chinese psychiatric professionals is limited.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a precursor to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, and an early diagnosis and intervention can delay its progression. However, the brain MRI images of MCI patients have small changes and blurry shapes. At the same time, MRI contains a large amount of redundant information, which leads to the poor performance of current MCI detection methods based on deep learning.

Objectives: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a potential therapeutic psychiatric tool that has been shown to modulate clinical symptoms and brain function by inducing brain oscillations. However, direct evidence on the effects of gamma-tACS (γ-tACS) on Bipolar I Disorder (BD-I) is limited. In the present study we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy to explore prefrontal hemodynamic changes in BD-I patients receiving combined γ-tACS intervention in addition to pharmacological treatment.

As a major mental health disorder, symptoms of schizophrenia (SCZ) include delusions, reduced motivation, hallucinations, reduced motivation and a variety of cognitive disabilities. Many of these symptoms are now known to be associated with abnormal regulation of the immune system. Low blood levels of cytokines and chemokines have been suggested to be one of the underlying causes of SCZ.

Background: No consistent conclusion has been reached regarding the attentional bias characteristics of adolescents with major depressive disorders (MDD), and unexamined co-occurring anxiety distress may contribute to this inconsistency.

Methods: We enrolled 50 MDD adolescents with anxiety distress, 47 MDD adolescents without anxiety distress and 48 healthy adolescents. We measured attentional bias using a point-probe paradigm during a negative-neutral emotional face task.

Background: Growing evidence points to the pivotal role of vitamin D in the pathophysiology and treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, there is a paucity of longitudinal research investigating the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the brain of MDD patients.

Methods: We conducted a double-blind randomized controlled trial in 46 MDD patients, who were randomly allocated into either VD (antidepressant medication + vitamin D supplementation) or NVD (antidepressant medication + placebos) groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Mental disorders can be triggered by adverse weather and particulate matter (PM), especially fine PM (≤1 μm), but there's limited research on the smallest PM size.
  • A study conducted in Hefei, China, from 2016 to 2019 analyzed daily emergency department visits and hospitalizations for schizophrenia- and mood-related disorders, using a time-stratified case-crossover analysis.
  • Findings revealed that different sizes of PM have varying effects on mental disorder risks, with smaller PM linked to higher risks, especially on cold days, and the strongest association noted for schizophrenia-related disorders.

Electronic address:

Pain symptoms significantly impact the well-being and work capacity of individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and hinder treatment and recovery. Despite existing literature focusing on the neural substrate of pain and anxiety separately, further exploration is needed to understand the possible neuroimaging mechanisms of the pain symptoms in GAD patients. We recruited 73 GAD patients and 75 matched healthy controls (HC) for clinical assessments, as well as resting-state functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging scans.

Electronic address:

Depressive symptoms is a public health concern worldwide, and adolescents may experience more depressive symptoms. Although the relationship between borderline personality features (BPFs) disorder and depressive symptoms has been established, it is unclear whether the longitudinal relationship between them is unidirectional or bidirectional and whether these symptoms are different between boys and girls. In this study, Chinese adolescents (1608 total and separately 972 for boys and 636 girls) were enrolled between September 2019 and September 2021, and we analyzed the data using a cross-lagged model.

J Neuroimmune Pharmacol

February 2024

Department of Pharmacy, Hefei Fourth People's Hospital, Anhui Mental Health Center, 316 Huangshan Road, Hefei, 230032, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammation is linked to depression, but how they connect isn’t fully understood; this study specifically investigates the role of circadian clock genes, particularly Bmal1, in this relationship.
  • The research utilized LPS-injected rats and BV2 cells to analyze the effects, revealing that LPS induced depression-like behavior and an inflammatory response in the rats, with various immune markers being affected.
  • Findings showed altered expression of neurotrophic factors and circadian genes in the brain, indicating that disruptions in circadian rhythms and inflammation processes could play a critical role in the development of depression.

Background: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe mental illness, Cognitive deficits and negative symptoms (NS) are prevalent in individuals with SCZ and are crucial indicators of functional recovery. It is well known that cognitive symptoms and negative symptoms are interrelated and that negative symptoms can affect the ability to take cognitive tests. However, the specific relationship between attention, working memory (WM), and NS in stable SCZ remains unclear.
