Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with a normal karyotype (CN-AML) constitutes approximately 50% of all AML cases, presenting significant prognostic variability, and highlighting the urgent need for the identification of novel molecular biomarkers. In this study, we systematically assessed GPR183 expression levels using qRT-PCR in our clinical follow-up study which included 283 CN-AML patients. Using Kaplan-Meier analysis, we found that patients with high GPR183 expression levels exhibited significantly worse overall survival (OS) (P = 0.

Purpose: Intrinsic capacity (IC), a crucial indicator for the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021-2030, is defined by WHO as the foundation of functional ability, representing the composite of all physical and mental capacities of an individual. IC spans five function domains: Locomotor, psychological, cognitive, vitality, and sensory (including vision and hearing). Accurate IC assessment is vital for effective interventions, yet comparative analyses of these tools are scarce.

This review provides an in-depth summary of the development of anti-cancer drugs for tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), with a particular focus on the development and tissue specialization of macrophages, and factors influencing the polarization of M1 and M2 macrophages, and mechanistic insights underlying the targeting therapeutic approaches. TAMs, pivotal in the tumor microenvironment, exhibit notable plasticity and diverse functional roles. Influenced by the complex milieu, TAMs polarize into M1-type, which suppresses tumors, and M2-type, which promotes metastasis.

Background: Developing proficiency in ultrasound-guided nerve block (UGNB) demands an intricate understanding of cross-sectional anatomy as well as spatial reasoning, which is a big challenge for beginners. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of virtual reality (VR)-facilitated anatomy education in the first performance of ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus blockade among novice anesthesiologists. We carried out pilot testing of this hypothesis using a prospective, single blind, randomized controlled trial.

Int J Surg

December 2024

Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Imaging and Interventional Medicine, Zhejiang Engineering Research Center of Interventional Medicine Engineering and Biotechnology, Lishui Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Lishui, China.

Background: Early recurrence in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) portends aggressive biological characteristics and a dismal prognosis. Prediction of early recurrence may help determine treatment strategies for LAGC. To develop a deep learning model for early recurrence prediction (DLER) based on preoperative multiphase computed tomography (CT) images and further explore the underlying biological basis of the proposed model.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between peripapillary atrophy (PPA) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with type 2 diabetes using advanced imaging techniques.
  • Participants were categorized based on PPA types and evaluated for DR severity, revealing that specific features of PPA, particularly the gamma zone, may correlate with lower DR grades.
  • The findings suggest that the gamma zone PPA might indicate resilience against DR through potential changes in the eye's structure due to conditions like myopia.

To study the effects and mechanisms of activation of human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5) by exosomal RNA hsa _ circ _ 0006357 (circEZH2) derived from non-small cell lung cancer. Western blot was used to detect exosome molecular markers, reverse transcription-quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and cell invasion assays to detect the effect of non-small cell lung cancer-derived exosomes on MRC-5 activation. A circRNA microarray analysis was performed in serum exosomes from patients with non-small cell lung cancer (collected at Ningbo University People's Hospital, September 2023), and levels of circEZH2 were measured in serum exosomes from non-small cell lung cancer by RT-qPCR analysis.

Primary liver cancer (PLC), which includes hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), remains a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Chronic liver diseases, such as hepatitis B and C infections and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), are key risk factors for PLC. Metabolic reprogramming, a defining feature of cancer, enables liver cancer cells to adapt to the demands of rapid proliferation and the challenging tumor microenvironment (TME).
