Rising challenges in periprosthetic joint infections: a focus on rare pathogens and their clinical implications.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

December 2024

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the First Affiliated Hospital, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, China.

Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate differences in clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) attributed to rare versus common pathogens.

Methods: Data on PJI patients who underwent hip or knee arthroplasty at our center from April 2013 to December 2022 were retrospectively collected. Among the 219 enrolled patients, we compared 32 cases of PJI caused by rare pathogens with 187 controls of PJI caused by common pathogens, analyzing demographic information, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcomes.

Background: The objective of this study is to utilize metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) to analyze the risk factors causing negative microbial cultures, comprehensively delineate the microbial profiles neglected by traditional cultures, and optimize the pathogenetic diagnostic procedure accordingly.

Research Design And Methods: We enrolled 341 patients diagnosed with OI at our center between 2016 and 2022, and gathered data including age, gender, clinical diagnosis, duration of antibiotic use prior to sampling, microbial culture results, and mNGS results for these patients. According to microbial detection results, risk factors for negative microbial culture and mNGS results were investigated through univariate and multivariate analyses, and the microbial profile in cases with negative microbial cultures was summarized in conjunction with mNGS results.

Purpose: Following failed internal fixation of intertrochanteric fractures (FIF-ITF), the decision to use a long-stem or standard-stem femoral implant in hip arthroplasty is still debated. This study aimed to explore how the healing status of fractures after FIF-ITF failure affects the choice of femoral stem and clinical outcomes.

Methods: Our retrospective cohort study reviewed 105 cases of patients with FIF-ITF who underwent hip arthroplasty at three tertiary Grade A hospitals between December 2012 and December 2022.

Wireless Optogenetic Targeting Nociceptors Helps Host Cells Win the Competitive Colonization in Implant-Associated Infections.

Small Methods

December 2024

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, National Regional Medical Center, Binhai Campus of the First Affiliated Hospital, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, 350000, China.

The role of nociceptive nerves in modulating immune responses to harmful stimuli via pain or itch induction remains controversial. Compared to conventional surgery, various implant surgeries are more prone to infections even with low bacterial loads. In this study, an optogenetic technique is introduced for selectively activating peripheral nociceptive nerves using a fully implantable, wirelessly rechargeable optogenetic device.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether combined of pathogen detection strategies, including specimen acquisition, culture conditions, and molecular diagnostics, can improve treatment outcomes in patients with periprosthetic joint infections (PJI).

Methods: This retrospective study included suspected PJI cases from three sequential stages at our institution: Stage A (July 2012 to June 2015), Stage B (July 2015 to June 2018), and Stage C (July 2018 to June 2021). Cases were categorized into PJI and aseptic failure (AF) groups based on European Bone and Joint Infection Society (EBJIS) criteria.

Hypothesis: Cochlear microphonic recorded at ear canal (CM-EC) can be a substitute for the one recorded at round window (CM-RW).

Background: Almost all clinics do not measure tone-burst evoked CM due to technical difficulty although it can provide more information than click evoked CM. Moreover, clinicians like the CM-EC more than that measured at CM-RW because CM-EC is non-invasive.

Background: With little attention given to low-frequency traffic noise and our understanding that cochlear function may be highly susceptible to low-frequency noise, there is an urgent need to determine traffic noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), not only the hearing loss at low frequency but also the possible high-frequency hearing loss.

Methods: The current study aims to investigate the potential for extensive hearing loss induced by exposure to 0.063 kHz octave band noise (OBN), which is an important component of low-frequency traffic noise.

Electronic address:

Background: Intestinal epithelial barrier disruption and bacterial translocation exacerbates the progression of alcoholic liver disease. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), a probiotic, has been shown benefits in chronic liver disease and in regulating gut dysbiosis. Previous studies showed the protective roles of LGG in ethanol-disrupted gut barrier functions and liver injury.

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) LINC00461 (LINC00461) is reported to be related to glioma progression. However, the mechanism of LINC00461 in glioma remains unclear. Expression of LINC00461, miRNA (miR)-216a, and aquaporin 4 (AQP4) was detected using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and western blotting.

MicroRNAs (miR) are a class of non-coding endogenous RNA molecules that suppress the translation of protein-coding genes by destabilizing target mRNAs. The MiR-574-5p has been reported to be involved in the several types of cancer. However, the expression of miR-574-5p and its mechanism in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remain unclear.

It may take time to obtain a vaccine for the current COVID-19, and the virus genome may keep an evolution and mutations, so a universal and effective vaccine for the coronavirus may not be possible. Epidemiological studies reveal the infection of SARS and COVID-19 in children is less frequent and less severe than in adults. Childhood vaccine-mediated cross cellular immunity and immunomodulation might provide protection against the infections of COVID-19.

However, whether sorafenib could be used to suppress the EMT of HCC after insufficient RFA and further prevent the progression of residual HCC remains poorly unknown.

Methods: Insufficient RFA was simulated using a water bath (47 °C 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 min gradually).
