Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how prenatal exposure to metal mixtures affects fetal growth, focusing on differences between male and female fetuses.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 1,041 pregnant women, measuring 12 metals in maternal blood at various stages of pregnancy and assessing fetal growth through a specific indicator called biparietal diameter (BPD).
  • Findings reveal that cobalt has opposing effects on growth trajectories by sex; it negatively impacts male fetuses while positively affecting females, with significant interactions between metal exposure and sex influencing growth outcomes.

December 2024

Department of Gynaecology, The Affiliated Wuxi People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University/Wuxi Medical Center, Nanjing Medical University/Wuxi People's Hospital, 299 Qingyang Road, Wuxi, 214023, Jiangsu, China.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as crucial regulators in cancer progression. We found lncRNA DNM1P35 is elevated in ovarian tumors compared to normal tissues, and demonstrated that lncRNA DNM1P35 promoted cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion in SK-OV-3 and OVCAR-3 cell lines. Furthermore, lncRNA DNM1P35 also facilitated the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of ovarian cancer cells.

Imbalances in several trace elements related to antioxidant function may lead to autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-related physiological dysfunction. Nonetheless, contradictory results have been found on the connection between these elements and ASD, and studies of their joint effects and interactions have been insufficient. We therefore designed a case-control study of 152 ASD children and 152 age- and sex-matched typically developing (TD) children to explore the individual and combined associations of manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) with ASD.

Acoustic Exaggeration Enhances Speech Discrimination in Young Autistic Children.

Autism Res

December 2024

Psychiatry and Addictology Department, CIUSSS-NIM Research Center, University of Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Child-directed speech (CDS), which amplifies acoustic and social features of speech during interactions with young children, promotes typical phonetic and language development. In autism, both behavioral and brain data indicate reduced sensitivity to human speech, which predicts absent, decreased, or atypical benefits of exaggerated speech signals such as CDS. This study investigates the impact of exaggerated fundamental frequency (F0) and voice-onset time on the neural processing of speech sounds in 22 Chinese-speaking autistic children aged 2-7 years old with a history of speech delays, compared with 25 typically developing (TD) peers.

The recent advancements in cancer immunotherapy have spotlighted the potential of natural killer (NK) cells, particularly chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-transduced NK cells. These cells, pivotal in innate immunity, offer a rapid and potent response against cancer cells and pathogens without the need for prior sensitization or recognition of peptide antigens. Although NK cell genetic modification is evolving, the viral transduction method continues to be inefficient and fraught with risks, often resulting in cytotoxic outcomes and the possibility of insertional mutagenesis.
