Background: Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory disorder of the pancreas, leading to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in severe cases. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1), a Tie-2 receptor agonist, and microRNA-126 (miR-126) have been reported to be involved in angiogenesis and anti-inflammatory functions. In the present study, we explored the effects of Ang-1 and miR-126 on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory injury in pancreatic cells, HPDE6-C7.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine the safety of carboxymethyl chitosan zinc and peptide on human periodontal ligament cells (HPDLCs) in a lab setting.
  • Researchers cultured primary periodontal cells and assessed their activity using various concentrations of the materials, finding that all concentrations did not negatively impact cell growth.
  • The results indicated that CMC-Zn-P has no cytotoxic effects on HPDLCs, meeting national safety standards.

The purpose of this study was to profile altered patterns of gene expression that characterize abdominal aortic aneurysm and to compare these patterns between different conditions, unruptured (URA) and ruptured (RA). Full-thickness aortic wall tissues were obtained from patients during surgical repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm, including unruptured (n=29) and ruptured (n=11). RNA, protein and blood samples were prepared for each specimen, and differential levels of gene expression between unruptured and ruptured abdominal aortic tissues were assessed by immunohistochemistry, RT-qPCR and ELISA assays.

MicroRNAs (miRs), acting as tumor suppressor or oncogenes genes, play a critical role in controlling tumor invasion, metastasis and survival via regulating a variety of targets. MiR-148a has been observed low expressed in several types of human cancers, and overexpression of miR-148a inhibits tumorigenesis. However, the molecular mechanisms of miR-148a-mediated these effects are largely elusive.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the typical representative factor of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and is considered to be a key inducer of retinal vascular permeability in DR. Anti-VEGF has been widely used in clinical treatment but every patient is effective, therefore, it is necessary to find other effective factors that participate in the pathology of DR. We provide evidence from both human and animal experiments for the considerable roles of classical neuronal guidance factors, netrin-1 and netrin-4, in indicating and amending the pathology of DR.

The study objective was to investigate the expression of ATP8A1 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to discover the role of ATP8A1 in the carcinogenesis of NSCLC. We collected 25 cases of tumor tissues and the adjacent normal tissues from surgeries of NSCLC patients in our hospital, among which 15 cases were found with lymph node metastasis while the other 10 were not. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to compare the expression level of TAP8A1 protein in NSCLC tissues with or without lymph node metastasis and the adjacent normal tissues.

Background: The pathogenesis and progression of branch atheromatous disease (BAD), which differs from lipohyalinotic degeneration (LD), remains controversial. Few studies have investigated the lipid indices and glycometabolism status factors for BAD in first-ever penetrating artery infarction (PAI).

Methods: We retrospectively examined acute stroke patients with PAI admitted within 3 days after stroke.

HIV invasion of the central nervous system (CNS) in the majority of patients infected with HIV-1, leads to dysfunction and injury within the CNS, showing a variety of neurological symptoms which was broadly termed HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). But the molecular mechanisms are not completely understood. It has been suggested that apoptosis and autophagic dysfunction in neurons may play an important role in the development of HAND.

Background And Aims: Overexpression of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 has been implicated in promoting cell survival, migration and invasion in many cancers, including anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC). In the present study, we studied the effect of suppressing TGF-β1 by RNA silencing on the survival, invasion and metastasis of ATC cells.

Methods: Small interfering RNA (siRNA) constructs targeting TGF-β1 were validated and used to develop clonal derivatives of the ATC cell line, 8505C.

October 2016

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University. Qingdao 266000, Shandong Province,China.

Multiple myeloma is the most common type of multifocal plasma cell proliferation in the bone marrow, whereas cases with multiple amyloidosis of oral cavity are rarely documented. Clinically, the disease is easily miss- diagnosed and mistreated due to lack of specificity. This article reported a rare case with multiple myeloma and amyloidosis of tongue, gingiva, buccal mucosa, followed by a review of relevant literature.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nesfatin-1 signaling in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) on gastric functions, as well as the regulation of these effects by nucleus accumbens (NAc) projections to VMH. The expression of c-fos in nesfatinergic VMH neurons induced by gastric distension (GD) was measured using the double fluoro-immunohistochemical staining. The firing rates of neurons were monitored with single-unit extracellular electric discharge recording.

Serum glycoprotein-derived N- and O-linked glycans as cancer biomarkers.

Am J Cancer Res

November 2016

Institute of Cerebrovascular Diseases, Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao UniversityQingdao 266003, China; School of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ocean University of ChinaQingdao 266003, China.

Early detection of cancer is the key to improving survival. Since most clinically used serum cancer biomarkers are either glycoproteins or glycan structures that can be recognized by specific monoclonal antibodies, developing glycan structure-based biomarkers from human serum/plasma glycoproteins through mass spectrometry (MS) analysis are active research field during the past decades. Numerous studies have shown that changes in serum/plasma glycan structures occur during cancer initiation, progression, and treatment.

Background And Objective: microRNAs (miRs) are small noncoding RNAs that modulate a variety of cellular processes by regulating multiple targets, which can promote or inhibit the development of malignant behaviors. Accumulating evidence suggests that microRNA-221 (miR-221) plays important roles in human carcinogenesis. It has recently found that miR-221 was overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and overexpression of miR-221 has a bad prognosis in these patients.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is one of the most aggressive human cancers and often shows resistance to multimodal therapeutic approaches. It has been shown that the transcriptional repressor Slug inhibits the chemotherapeutic agent-induced apoptosis of cancer cells. We evaluated whether targeting of Slug could augment doxorubicin (DOX)-induced apoptosis of ATC cells.
