Immune checkpoint inhibitors including programmed death-1 inhibitors are promising agents for many types of malignancies; however, it is still an off-label choice for type B3 thymoma. We reported for the first time a patient with type B3 thymoma developed fatal myocarditis and rhabdomyolysis after one dose of nivolumab administration. The results from myocardial and muscle biopsies revealed extensive myocyte damage, T-lymphocytic infiltration and strongly expression of PD-L1 which confirmed the nivolumab-related immune-related adverse events (irAEs).

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the cardioprotective effect of ulinastatin against isoproterenol‑induced chronic heart failure (CHF). Compared with the control group, treatment with ulinastatin decreased interventricular septal thickness and left ventricular posterior wall thickness, and improved the left ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricular fractional shortening and peak E and peak A ratio in the isoproterenol‑induced CHF rat. In addition, ulinastatin suppressed inflammation, oxidative stress and apoptosis in heart tissue from isoproterenol‑induced CHF rats.

Prolonged use of mechanical ventilation (MV) leads to atrophy and dysfunction of the major inspiratory muscle, the diaphragm, contributing to ventilator dependence. Numerous studies have shown that proteolysis and oxidative stress are among the major effectors of ventilator-induced diaphragm muscle dysfunction (VIDD), but the upstream initiator(s) of this process remain to be elucidated. We report here that periodic diaphragm contraction via phrenic nerve stimulation (PNS) substantially reduces MV-induced proteolytic activity and oxidative stress in the diaphragm.

Objective: To analyze the clinical efficacy of hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether photodynamic therapy (HMME-PDT) in treating port-wine stains (PWS), and its clinical operation skills and operation essentials.

Method: A total of 16 cases of PWS with negative HMME skin test results were included in this study. Their treated areas were exposed and injected with 5mg/kg HMME, and then irradiated under 532nm LED green light (produced by Wuhan YaGe LED1 modified machines), with the irradiation power density between 80 and 100mW/cm.

Background: The N‑terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) has an important prognostic value in chronic renal insufficiency; however, most studies have been conducted in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). In this study we evaluated the prognostic significance of NT-proBNP in very old patients with stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD) and compared its prognostic value in CKD3a versus CKD3b patients.

Methods: Patients (age ≥80 years old) hospitalized with stage 3 CKD from 2007 to 2010 who were eligible for this prospective study underwent follow-up examinations in 2015.

Department of Orthopedics, Beijing North Hospital of the China North Industries Group Corporation, Beijing Department of Orthopedics, First Affiliated hospital of Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou Department of Orthopedics, First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, Dalian Department of Orthopedics, First Affiliated Hospital of PLA General Hospital, Beijing, People's Republic of China.

The aim of this study is to estimate the risk factors of both respiratory complication (RC) and mortality after acute traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (TCSCI). Between July 2005 and July 2015, in 181 patients (142 males and 39 females; mean age 41.0 years) with acute TCSCI, we compared the difference and odds ratio in RC group (n = 73) with that of non-RC group (n = 108), and also death group (n = 15) and survival group (n = 166).

Effects of low-intensity pulsed electromagnetic fields on bone microarchitecture, mechanical strength and bone turnover in type 2 diabetic db/db mice.

Sci Rep

September 2017

State Key Laboratory of Military Stomatology, Department of Orthodontics, School of Stomatology, Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, 710032, P.R. China.

Type 2 diabetic patients have impaired bone quality, leading to increased fracture risk. Substantial evidence demonstrates that pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) could resist osteopenia/osteoporosis induced by estrogen deficiency and disuse. However, the effects of PEMF on osteopenia/osteoporosis associated with diabetes, especially for more prevalent type 2 diabetes, remain poorly understood.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) play crucial roles in cancer development and progression. The purposes of this study were to investigate the role of miR-187 in osteosarcoma and clarify the regulation of MAPK12 by miR-187. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to examine miR-187 expression in osteosarcoma tissues and cell lines.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most frequently occurring pediatric bone malignancy in the world. Numerous miRNAs have previously been demonstrated to participate in the initiation and development of OS. The present study aimed to reveal the role of microRNA‑300 (miR‑300) in OS cells and elucidate the underlying mechanism involved.

Medicine (Baltimore)

July 2017

Department of Orthopaedics, First Affiliated Hospital of PLA General Hospital, Beijing Department of Orthopaedics Education Department, First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, Dalian, the People's Republic of China.

The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between high-intensity zone (HIZ) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of a lumbar disc and positive pain response assessed by discography for the diagnosis and treatment of discogenic low back pain (LBP). Thirty-seven patients aged 21 to 59 years with chronic LBP but without any neurological symptoms or lumbar disc herniation who underwent MRI and subsequent discography were included in this study. During discography, concordant pain was regarded as positive, whereas discordant pain and no pain were regarded as negative.

HDM2 Promotes NEDDylation of Hepatitis B Virus HBx To Enhance Its Stability and Function.

J Virol

August 2017

Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microbiology and Immunology, Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China

Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-encoded X protein (HBx) plays a critical role in HBV-related hepatocarcinoma development. In this study, we demonstrate that HBx is specifically modified by NEDD8. We found that E3 ligase HDM2 promotes NEDDylation of HBx to enhance HBx stability by preventing its ubiquitination-mediated degradation.

The procedure of crestal maxillary sinus floor elevation presents a great challenge to the field of implant dentistry. Due to the limited visualization in this procedure, the effectiveness of detaching sinus mucosa could not be assessed in real time. We recently developed an ex vivo goat sinus model by cutting the goat residual skulls along four lines determined from computerized tomography (CT) scans, extracting the maxillary premolar or molar teeth, and preparing implant socket in the maxilla.
