Purpose: Two Chinese families (XT and YT) with congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles (CFEOM) were identified. The purpose of this study was to determine if previously described Homo sapiens kinesin family member 21A (KIF21A) mutations were responsible for CFEOM in these two Chinese pedigrees.

Methods: Clinical characterization and genetic studies were performed.

Background: Differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) with rising thyroglobulin (Tg) level and negative radioiodine whole body scan results has been observed in follow-up studies. The management of this condition remains controversial. Most studies support blind (131)I treatment while others oppose this approach.

In the current study, a mutant recombinant human interleukin-2 (MhIL-2) was generated using site-directed mutagenesis. The bacteria transformed with plasmid pET15b-MhIL-2 were cultured in LB medium containing 0.6mM IPTG for 8 hours at 27°C.

Purpose: To establish the effects of TSH stimulation on the uptake of fluorine-18-labeled 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose for differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) with thyroglobulin-positive and scan negative metastases.

Materials And Methods: We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library for prospective controlled trials using TSH stimulation as an intervention. The outcomes of positron emission tomography (PET)-positive lesions, tumor-to-background ratio, maximum standard uptake value of the detected lesions were extracted and synthesized, and patients with the altered clinical management were studied.

Objective: To explore the impact of genetic background on pancreatic beta-cell first-phase secretion function with L-arginine (L-ARG) stimulation test.

Methods: Plasma insulin level was detected in 201 cases before and after L-ARG stimulation test. Among them, 61 cases were newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients with family history of diabetes (FH+DM), 55 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients without family history of diabetes (FH-DM), 31 with normal glucose tolerance and family history of diabetes (FH+) 54 with normal glucose tolerance but without family history of diabetes (FH-).

Background: Radioactive iodine treatment for differentiated thyroid cancer possibly results in xerostomia. Amifostine has been used to prevent the effects of irradiation to salivary glands. To date, the effects of amifostine on salivary glands in radioactive iodine treated differentiated thyroid cancer remain uncertain.

There has been an increasing appreciation of the role that microglial cells play in neural damage. Marrow stromal cells (MSCs) can dramatically lessen neural damage in animal models, but the mechanisms involved have not been defined. This study aimed to investigate the effects of human MSCs (hMSCs) on the activation of primary microglia and the attendant production of pro-inflammatory factors stimulated by bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

This study was undertaken to identify differences in protein expression profiles between superficial bladder transitional cell carcinoma (BTCC) and normal urothelial cells. We used laser capture microdissection (LCM) to harvest purified cells, and used two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) followed by electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) to separate and identify the peptide mixture. A total of 440/438 proteins commonly appeared in 4 paired specimens.

Background: To evaluate the risk factors for invasive bladder cancer and to develop a predictive model for the improvement of individual comprehensive therapy for invasive bladder cancers.

Materials And Methods: The records of 356 patients with invasive bladder cancer, operated on at three Chinese medical institutes, were reviewed. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to assess the clinical and pathological variables affecting disease-free survival (DFS).

Outcomes for a large series of radical cystectomies for bladder cancer.

Eur J Surg Oncol

August 2008

Department of Urology, TianJin Institute of Urology, The second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, 23 Pingjiang Road, Tianjin 300211, China.

Aims: We present the characteristics and outcomes of a large Chinese series of patients treated with radical cystectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy for invasive cancer of the bladder. Our aim is to determine the significant independent prognostic factors that determine this outcome.

Methods: The records of 356 patients with invasive bladder cancer, operated at three Chinese medical institutes between 1995 and 2004, were reviewed.

Objective: To explore the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and hypothyroidism, and to discuss the management experience.

Method: Three cases of severity OSAS with hypothyroidism were reported and relevant literatures were reviewed. One patient underwent continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), one patient was performed uvulopalatopharyngoplasty(UPPP), and one case is in follow-up now.
