Whether the dynamic development of peripheral inflammation aggravates brain injury and leads to poor outcome in stroke patients receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), remains unclear and warrants further study. In this study, total of 1034 patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent IVT were enrolled. Serum leukocyte variation (whether increase from baseline to 24 h after IVT), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), infarct volume, early neurologic deterioration (END), the unfavorable outcome at 3-month (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score ≥3) and mortality were recorded.

Doxorubicin (Dox) is a broad-spectrum antineoplastic chemotherapeutic agent used in clinical settings, yet it exhibits significant cardiotoxicity, which in severe cases can lead to heart failure. Research indicates that oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in Dox -induced cardiomyocyte injury. Therefore, the application of antioxidants represents an effective strategy to mitigate the cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a global medical challenge. Studies have shown that neurotoxicity caused by pathological aggregation of β-amyloid (Aβ) is an important factor leading to AD. Therefore, inhibiting the pathological aggregation of Aβ is the key to treating AD.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophic protein that promotes neuronal survival, increases neurotransmitter synthesis, and has potential therapeutic effects in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases, but its drug development has been limited by the fact that recombinant proteins of BDNF are unstable and do not penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB). In this study, we fused a TAT membrane-penetrating peptide with BDNF to express a recombinant protein (TBDNF), which was then PEG-modified to P-TBDNF. Protein characterization showed that P-TBDNF significantly improved the stability of the recombinant protein and possessed the ability to penetrate the BBB, and in cellular experiments, P-TBDNF prevented MPTP-induced nerve cell oxidative stress damage, apoptosis and inflammatory response, and its mechanism of action was closely related to the activation of tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) receptor and inhibition of microglia activation.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a cardiac disorder in which myocardial damage occurs as a result of myocardial ischemia and hypoxia. Evidence suggests that oxidative stress and inflammatory responses are critical in the development of myocardial ischemia. Therefore, the combination of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory applications is an effective strategy to combat ischemic heart disease.

The treatment of Parkinson's disease is a global medical challenge. α-Synuclein (α-Syn) is the causative protein in Parkinson's disease and is closely linked to its progression. Therefore, inhibiting the pathological aggregation of α-Syn and its neurotoxicity is essential for the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Acute myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism can have life-threatening consequences such as congestive heart and respiratory failure, respectively. Cancer patients are at great risk of both acute myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism complications because the malignancy sparks the patient's blood hypercoagulable state. Nevertheless, the literature currently offers only a few reports on acute myocardial infarction associated with pulmonary embolism, and two of them occurred in the same cancer patient.

Prolonged exposure to UV light can lead to photo-ageing of the skin. Therefore, the development and application of anti-photoaging drugs is urgent. In this study, we co-loaded apigenin (Apn) and doxycycline (Doc), a broad-spectrum inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), into flexible liposomes to exert anti-photoaging effects by combating oxidative stress, anti-inflammation, reducing the activation of MMPs and preventing collagen loss.

The anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangement is a driving mutation that underlies about 5-6% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cases. Lung cancers that are ALK gene rearrangement-positive can be effectively treated with ALK inhibitors. However, the response of patients with rarer ALK gene rearrangements to ALK inhibitors remains unknown.

Objective: Keshan disease (KD) is a mitochondrial cardiomyopathy. The present study explored the roles of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), the key regulator of mitochondrial structure and function, and its coactivators in myocardial injury in chronic KD. Furthermore, the usefulness of these molecules in the diagnosis of chronic KD was assessed.

Fluctuations in the concentration of glucose in the blood is more detrimental than a constantly high level of glucose with respect to the development of cardiovascular complications associated with diabetes mellitus (DM). Sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been developed as antidiabetic drugs with cardiovascular benefits; however, whether inhibition of SGLT1 protects the diabetic heart remains to be determined. This study investigated the role of SGLT1 in rat H9c2 cardiomyocytes subjected to fluctuating levels of glucose and the underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND Emerging data have established links between systemic metabolic dysfunction, such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS), with neurocognitive impairment, including dementia. The common gene signature and the associated signaling pathways of MetS, diabetes, and dementia have not been widely studied. MATERIAL AND METHODS We exploited the translational bioinformatics approach to choose the common gene signatures for both dementia and MetS.

β1 integrin-mediated migration plays a fundamental role in melanoma metastasis. Here, we evaluated the molecular mechanisms underlying the anti-metastatic capacity of a polysaccharide fraction (CLPS) from Codonopsis lanceolata. CLPS inhibited in vivo melanoma metastasis in a B16F10 pulmonary metastasis model, impaired β1 integrin-mediated B16F10 melanoma cell migration in vitro evaluated by Transwell assay, reduced affinity between β1 integrin and ligand protein GST-FNIII.
