Nuclear factor erythroid 2 (NF-E2)-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a key transcription factor in the antioxidant response and is associated with various chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the action of esculetin, a natural dihydroxy coumarin, on attenuating middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and reperfusion, and whether its effect is dependent on Nrf2 activation, as well as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) inhibition. Two doses of esculetin (20 and 40 mg/kg) were tested on rats with MCAO reperfusion.

Department of Colorectal Surgery, National Cancer Center/National Clinical Research Center for Cancer/Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, 17 Panjiayuan Nanli, Chaoyang District, Beijing, 100021, China.

Background: Lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) can decrease local recurrence to lateral compartments in middle-low rectal cancer, but pathological evidence for optimal surgical indications, especially after neoadjuvant (chemo)radiotherapy (nCRT), is lacking. This study aimed to identify the predictive factors and oncological outcomes for different LLN locations associated with pathological metastasis.

Method: In this multicenter study, patients from 19 centers who underwent total mesorectal excision (TME) with LLND for locally advanced mid-/low rectal cancer from January 2012 to December 2021 were included.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored how cordycepin affects renal damage caused by hypothyroidism using a rat model induced by propylthiouracil (PTU), observing general health, thyroid and kidney function, blood lipids, and tissue damage.
  • - Findings showed that hypothyroid rats experienced renal damage and increased blood lipids as the disease progressed, with higher levels of MCP-1 indicating podocyte damage.
  • - Cordycepin was found to enhance thyroid function and significantly alleviate kidney damage, reducing both renal harm and blood lipid levels, while also decreasing the expression of damage markers MCP-1 and Desmin, indicating potential protective effects for renal health.

Laboratory of Pathology, Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, China; Center of Metabolic Diseases and Cancer Research, Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, China; Hebei Collaborative Innovation Center of Tumor Microecological Metabolism Regulation, Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University, Baoding, China. Electronic address:

Tumor-associated chronic lung inflammation depends on tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α to activate several cytokines as part of an inflammatory loop, which plays a critical role in tumor progression in lung adenocarcinoma. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a cytokine that mediates inflammation. Whether TNF-α-induced inflammation regulates HMGB1 to contribute to tumor progression and promotion in lung adenocarcinoma remains unclear.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) may be associated with cerebral vasospasm, which can lead to delayed cerebral ischemia, infarction, and worsened functional outcomes. The delayed nature of cerebral ischemia secondary to SAH-related vasculopathy presents a window of opportunity for the evaluation of well-tolerated neuroprotective agents administered soon after ictus. Secondary ischemic injury in SAH is associated with increased extracellular glutamate, which can overactivate NMDA receptors (NMDARs), thereby triggering NMDAR-mediated cellular damage.

  • NR4A1 is an ultra-early response gene linked to various diseases, but its role in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not well understood.
  • In a study using unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) mice, reducing NR4A1 levels worsened kidney damage by increasing inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell death.
  • Treatment with NR4A1 agonist Cytosporone B reduced CKD symptoms and the study suggests that the protective effects of NR4A1 may be due to the activation of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.
