Background: There is still a debate regarding whether regimens combining irinotecan with platinum could replace regimens combining etoposide with platinum, as first-line chemotherapy for extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC). We performed a meta-analysis to compare these regimens as first-line chemotherapy for ES-SCLC.

Methods: A literature search for randomized controlled trials was performed using the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase.

Intracranial aneurysm (IA) is an abnormal expansion in the intracranial arteries that weakens the arterial wall by consistently pushing the vascular wall outwards, which leads to a higher risk of aneurysm rupture. A number of reports have demonstrated that apoptosis is associated with the growth and rupture of IA. MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) perform vital roles in the regulation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway and signaling proteins.

Osteoporosis is closely associated with intervertebral disc degeneration. While parathyroid hormone (PTH) 1‑34, which is an established drug used to treatosteoporosis, is thought to inhibit the disc degeneration associated with osteoporosis, the precise mechanism involved remains unclear. In the present study, primary Sprague‑Dawley rat nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) were cultured, phenotyped and then treated with dexamethasone (DXM) for 48 h.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Previous studies indicated that miR-361-5p was downregulated in breast cancer, however, the exact effect of miR-361-5p on TNBC requires further investigation. In the present study, we investigated whether miR-361-5p can act as a tumor suppressor by targeting required for cell differentiation 1 homolog (RQCD1) and inhibiting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)/phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) pathway in TNBC.

Article Synopsis
  • The global prevalence of liver diseases is increasing, with recent studies highlighting the benefits of liver surgeries like hepatectomy and transplantation, despite existing technical challenges.
  • Recent research indicates that 3D printing technology, both traditional and bio-printing with liver cells, can enhance treatment approaches for liver conditions, including creating patient-specific models for medical training and surgical procedures.
  • The use of 3D-printed liver models and bioactive tissues may improve liver regeneration, support drug testing, and expand resources for liver transplants, potentially leading to better patient outcomes and reduced complications in treatment.

Osteoporosis is a systemic bone metabolic disease that is highly prevalent in the elderly population, particularly in postmenopausal women, which results in enhanced bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures. However, the underlying molecular pathogenesis mechanisms still remain to be further elucidated. In this study, in a rat ovariectomy- (OVX-) induced postmenopausal osteoporosis model, aberrant expression of a microRNA miR-142-5p and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) was found by RNA sequencing analysis and qRT-PCR.

Emerging evidence has indicated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play critical roles in tumor development and progression. Recent studies reported that lncRNA MIR22HG could play important roles in hepatocellular carcinoma and lung cancer progression. However, the expression and underlying mechanism of MIR22HG in endometrial cancer (EC) remain unclear.

Objective: To delineate fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of compressed nerve roots in patients with lumbar disc herniation by diffusion tensor imaging and fiber bundle tracing and investigate the relationship between FA and ADC values and Swiss Spinal Stenosis Questionnaire and visual analog scale scores.

Methods: Twenty patients with lumbar disc herniation and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were assessed using the Swiss Spinal Stenosis Questionnaire and visual analog scale. All subjects underwent conventional sagittal T1-weighted and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, axial T2-weighted imaging, and diffusion tensor imaging and fiber tractography.

SREBP2 contributes to cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer cells.

Exp Biol Med (Maywood)

April 2018

1 Beijing Scientific Operation Co., Ltd, Beijing 100121, P.R. China.

This study is to investigate transcription factors involved in cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer cells. The transcriptome of cisplatin resistant and sensitive A2780 epithelial ovarian cancer cells was obtained from GSE15372. Ovarian transcriptome data GSE62944 was downloaded from TCGA and applied for transcription regulatory network analysis.

It remains unknown whether blockade of B-Raf proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase (BRAF) signaling and MET proto-oncogene, receptor tyrosine kinase (c-Met) signaling is effective in suppressing the growth of human colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. The present study investigated the effects of the vemurafenib alone and in combination with c-Met inhibitor PHA-665752 on the growth of human CRC cells and in mouse xenografts. HT-29 and RKO CRC cell lines with BRAF mutations and mice bearing HT-29 xenografts were treated with vemurafenib in the absence or presence of PHA-665752.

The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of dexmedetomidine in improving postoperative cognitive dysfunction from the perspectives of alleviating neuronal mitochondrial membrane oxidative stress and electrophysiological dysfunction. A total of 120 patients undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia from June 2013 to May, 2016 were selected as the subjects of the study and randomly divided into the propofol + remifentanil and dexmedetomidine groups. The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were performed at day 1 before operation and at day 1, 3, 5 and 15 after operation.

Autophagy is an important self-adaptive mechanism that is involved in inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) in spinal cord neurons. Pterostilbene, a natural plant extract, has been demonstrated to possess antioxidant effects; however, it has not yet been investigated whether pterostilbene could activate autophagy and protect spinal cord neurons from oxidative stress. In the present study, primary spinal cord neurons of Sprague Dawley rats were cultured.

The aim of the present study was to provide a novel method for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer by the determination of the characteristic expression of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) and the enzyme matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) in endometrial cancer tissue. Three types of endometrial tissue specimens were selected (including 20 cases of normal endometrial tissue specimens, 15 cases of hyperplastic endometrial tissue specimens and 45 cases of endometrial cancer tissue specimens). The expression of eIF4E and MMP9 in the specimens was examined by immunohistochemistry and their corresponding levels were statistically analyzed.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNA molecules, about 21-25 nucleotides in length. Accumulating evidence demonstrated that dysregulation or dysfunction of miRNAs are involved in various diseases, including cancer. MiR-143, recently has been reported to function as an important tumor suppressor in prostate cancer, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and other kinds of cancers, but rarely systematically studied in pituitary tumor.
