Acute effects of human protein S administration after traumatic brain injury in mice.

Despite years of effort, no effective acute phase treatment has been discovered for traumatic brain injury. One impediment to successful drug development is entangled secondary injury pathways. Here we show that protein S, a natural multifunctional protein that regulates coagulation, inflammation, and apoptosis, is able to reduce the extent of multiple secondary injuries in traumatic brain injury, and therefore improve prognosis.

Current Status and Factors Influencing Surgical Options for Breast Cancer in China: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey of 110 Hospitals.

Background: There are limited nationwide data regarding breast cancer surgery in China. The Chinese Anti-Cancer Association's Committee of Breast Cancer Society and the Chinese Society of Breast Surgeons conducted a nationwide survey to examine the use of and barriers associated with surgical options among patients with breast cancer.

Methods: Surveys were sent via e-mail to the directors of 110 centers that performed at least 200 breast cancer operations in 2017.

The Auditory Hallucinations Rating Scale (AHRS), multiple psychometric scales, voxel-based morphometry (VBM), tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS), and multiple regression were used.

Background: The (pro) renin receptor ((P)RR) plays important roles in various pathways, such as the Wnt/β-catenin, renin-angiotensin system (RAS), MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways, that are involved in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes incorporating the tumorigenesis. However, our knowledge about (P) RR was mostly limited to its roles in cardiovascular and renal physiological functions and diseases. In the past 5 years, however, compelling evidence has revealed that (P) RR is aberrantly expressed in and contributes to the development of various cancers by different means.

Cdc37 suppression induces plasma cell immaturation and bortezomib resistance in multiple myeloma via Xbp1s.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most prevalent hematologic malignancy. Although the use of bortezomib (BTZ) significantly improves MM therapy, intrinsic and acquired drug resistance to BTZ remains a major clinical problem. In this study, we find that Cdc37, a key co-chaperone of Hsp90, is downregulated in relapsed MM patients, especially after BTZ treatment, suggesting a link between Cdc37 and BTZ resistance.

Risk Factors of Pulmonary Complications After Minimally Invasive Surgery for Elderly Patients with Vertebral Compression Fractures.

Purpose: To determine the risk factors for pulmonary complications after minimally invasive surgery in elderly patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCFs).

Methods: A total of 233 elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years) with VCFs, who underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) or percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) surgery at Hebei General Hospital from January 2011 to December 2016, were retrospectively analyzed. Risk factors and the effects of the model were determined by univariate logistic regression analyses and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, respectively.

Gastric and adrenal metastasis from breast cancer: Case report and review of literature.

Rationale: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancies in females. The most common sites of metastasis are bone, lung, liver, and brain. Gastrointestinal and adrenal gland metastasis from breast cancer are rare.

Objective: To investigate the expression and clinical significance of long non-coding RNA taurine up-regulated gene 1 (lncRNA TUG1) in the peripheral blood of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients.

Methods: With the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs: T-cells, B-cells and monocytes) collected from SLE patients and healthy controls, TUG1 expression was determined to identify the correlation with the clinicopathological features of SLE patients. Thereby, the diagnostic value of TUG1 expression in diagnosis of SLE was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

We aimed to know the effect of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) inhibition on the kidney injury of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) mice. Pristane-induced SLE mice were treated with pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC, 50 or 100 mg/kg), a NF-κB inhibitor. Histopathological changes were observed by hematoxylin & eosin, Masson and periodic schiff-methenamine stainings.

Evaluation of a risk index for predicting short-term and long-term outcomes in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the admission risk index (RI) to predict short-term and long-term outcomes in a broad population with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) using data from the Chinese Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry.

Background: The RI was developed as a simple tool to predict risk of death in STEMI patients. The performance in predicting short-term and long-term risk of death in Chinese patients receiving percutaneous coronary intervention and conservative treatment for STEMI remains unclear.
