Despite years of effort, no effective acute phase treatment has been discovered for traumatic brain injury. One impediment to successful drug development is entangled secondary injury pathways. Here we show that protein S, a natural multifunctional protein that regulates coagulation, inflammation, and apoptosis, is able to reduce the extent of multiple secondary injuries in traumatic brain injury, and therefore improve prognosis.

Objective: To explore shared brain structural alterations in patients diagnosed with mental disorders who experience own-thought auditory verbal hallucinations (OTAVHs).
Methods: A cohort of 143 first-diagnosis, nonmedicated patients with OTAVHs was enrolled: 25 with schizophrenia (FUSCH-OTAVH), 20 with major depression disorder (FUMDD-OTAVH), 28 with bipolar disorder (FUBD-OTAVH), 22 patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (FUPTSD-OTAVH), 21 with anxiety disorder (FUAD-OTAVH), and 27 with borderline personality disorder (FUBPD-OTAVH); 25 healthy controls (HCs) participated. The Auditory Hallucinations Rating Scale (AHRS), multiple psychometric scales, voxel-based morphometry (VBM), tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS), and multiple regression were used.

Both the herpes zoster virus and suid herpesvirus type 1 (SuHV-1) belong to the Varicellovirus genus of the α-herpesviridae subfamily. They may cause opportunistic infections especially in patients with kidney diseases, varying from latent illness to overt lethality. Under these circumstances, impaired renal function is both the culprit for and victim of the infection.

Circadian clock confers temporal control in metabolism, with its disruption leading to the development of insulin resistance. Metabolic substrate utilization in skeletal muscle is coordinated with diurnal nutrient cycles. However, whether the molecular clock is involved in this coordination is largely unknown.

Background: The (pro) renin receptor ((P)RR) plays important roles in various pathways, such as the Wnt/β-catenin, renin-angiotensin system (RAS), MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways, that are involved in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes incorporating the tumorigenesis. However, our knowledge about (P) RR was mostly limited to its roles in cardiovascular and renal physiological functions and diseases. In the past 5 years, however, compelling evidence has revealed that (P) RR is aberrantly expressed in and contributes to the development of various cancers by different means.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most prevalent hematologic malignancy. Although the use of bortezomib (BTZ) significantly improves MM therapy, intrinsic and acquired drug resistance to BTZ remains a major clinical problem. In this study, we find that Cdc37, a key co-chaperone of Hsp90, is downregulated in relapsed MM patients, especially after BTZ treatment, suggesting a link between Cdc37 and BTZ resistance.

Background: Adhesion after tendon injury is a common complication in clinical practice. The lack of effective prevention mechanisms seriously affects the functional rehabilitation of patients. This research aimed to optimise the amniotic membrane and explain the mechanism of tendon-amniotic membrane by imitating the tendon sheath to construct a multilayer electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibre membrane.

Purpose: To determine the risk factors for pulmonary complications after minimally invasive surgery in elderly patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCFs).
Methods: A total of 233 elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years) with VCFs, who underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) or percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) surgery at Hebei General Hospital from January 2011 to December 2016, were retrospectively analyzed. Risk factors and the effects of the model were determined by univariate logistic regression analyses and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, respectively.

Objective: To investigate the expression and clinical significance of long non-coding RNA taurine up-regulated gene 1 (lncRNA TUG1) in the peripheral blood of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients.
Methods: With the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs: T-cells, B-cells and monocytes) collected from SLE patients and healthy controls, TUG1 expression was determined to identify the correlation with the clinicopathological features of SLE patients. Thereby, the diagnostic value of TUG1 expression in diagnosis of SLE was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

We aimed to know the effect of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) inhibition on the kidney injury of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) mice. Pristane-induced SLE mice were treated with pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC, 50 or 100 mg/kg), a NF-κB inhibitor. Histopathological changes were observed by hematoxylin & eosin, Masson and periodic schiff-methenamine stainings.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the admission risk index (RI) to predict short-term and long-term outcomes in a broad population with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) using data from the Chinese Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry.
Background: The RI was developed as a simple tool to predict risk of death in STEMI patients. The performance in predicting short-term and long-term risk of death in Chinese patients receiving percutaneous coronary intervention and conservative treatment for STEMI remains unclear.
