Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between δ-catenin expression and whole-brain small-world network in breast cancer patients before chemotherapy using rs-fMRI. The study was based on the hypothesis that different δ-catenin expression levels correspond to distinct brain imaging characteristics. A total of 105 pathologically confirmed breast cancer patients were collected and categorized into high δ-catenin expression (DH, 52 cases) and low expression (DL, 53 cases) groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Salsolinol (SAL) is a neurotoxin linked to the development of Parkinson's disease (PD) by causing damage to dopaminergic neurons, and its mechanisms of toxicity involve inducing ferroptosis.
  • The study utilized RNA sequencing and biochemical analysis to show that SAL decreases the levels of proteins SLC7A11 and GPX4, leading to ferroptosis in neuroblastoma cells, which can be reversed by ferroptosis inhibitors.
  • Acteoside, a neuroprotective compound, counteracts SAL-induced neurotoxicity by enhancing SLC7A11 and GPX4 levels through activation of the Nrf2 pathway, suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy for PD by targeting ferroptosis.

Since the outbreak of the new coronavirus, point-of-care diagnostics based on nucleic acid testing have become a requirement for the development of pathogen diagnostics, which require the ability to accurately, rapidly, and conveniently detect pathogens. Conventional nucleic acid amplification techniques no longer meet the requirements for pathogen detection in low-resource, low-skill environments because they require specialist equipment, complex operations, and long detection times. Therefore, recombinant polymerase amplification (RPA) is becoming an increasingly important method in today's nucleic acid detection technology because it can amplify nucleic acids in 20-30 minutes at a constant temperature, greatly reducing the dependence on specialist equipment and technicians.

The medial overall survival is low in patients with gastric cancer (GC) at advanced stage, in which drug resistance plays an important role. β-elemene has been established as the suppressed role on GC cell proliferation, however, the concrete mechanism of it remains unclear in cisplatin (DDP)-resistance GC. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) assay was used to measure the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC) values of DDP in DDP-resistance GC cell lines.

Insufficient cytotrophoblast (CTB) migration and invasion into the maternal myometrium leads to pregnancy related complications like Intra-uterus Growth Restriction (IUGR), and pre-eclampsia (PE). We previously found that hydrogen sulfide (HS) enhanced CTB migration without knowing the mechanism(s) and the pathophysiological significance. By studying human samples and cell line, we found that HS levels were lower in PE patients' plasma; HS synthetic enzyme cystathionine β-synthetase (CBS) was reduced in PE extravillious invasive trophoblasts.

Revisiting PPAR agonists: novel perspectives in the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis.

Expert Opin Pharmacother

September 2024

Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Key Laboratory of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, Ministry of Education, National Clinical Research Center for Dermatologic and Immunologic Diseases, Beijing, China.

Introduction: In primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), approximately 40% of the patients respond incompletely to first-line treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), resulting in a poorer prognosis. Although obeticholic acid (OCA) is approved as a second-line therapy, it is not well-tolerated by patients with significant itching or advanced cirrhosis. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists, including fibrates traditionally known as antihyperlipidemic agents, have emerged as potent alternatives for treating PBC patients with an incomplete response to UDCA.

Ferroptosis, a unique type of regulated cell death plays a vital role in inhibiting tumour malignancy and has presented new opportunities for treatment of therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma. Accumulating studies indicate that epigenetic modifications by non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs, long noncoding RNAs, and circular RNAs, can determine cancer cell vulnerability to ferroptosis in HCC. The present review first summarize the updated core molecular mechanisms of ferroptosis.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most common microvascular complications in diabetes and can potentially develop into end-stage renal disease. Its pathogenesis is complex and not fully understood. Podocytes, glomerular endothelial cells (GECs), glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) and renal tubular epithelial cells (TECs) play important roles in the normal function of glomerulus and renal tubules, and their injury is involved in the progression of DN.
